Abstract

986,785. Storing liquefied gas. CONCH INTERNATIONAL METHANE Ltd. Oct. 24, 1963, No. 42094/63. Heading F4P. In a liquefied gas storage reservoir wherein a continuous aluminium or stainless steel membrane 5 extends into a gutter 6 containing a material 7 which is liquid at ambient temperature but solid when the membrane is in contact with the liquefied gas 1, the membrane 5 has vertical corrugations which extend from the bottom to the upper region where they are welded to horizontal corrugations 15, and the outside of the membrane has secured at the troughs or crests of the vertical corrugations a plurality of vertical structural members 8. The vertically corrugated portion of the membrane 5 may be fabricated from a single sheet or preferably (Fig. 2, not shown) from curved sheets welded together so that the welds run along each trough. The membrane 5 is reinforced by internal horizontal metal sections 13 and is surrounded by a wall 3 having either inwardly and horizontally extending ribs or as shown inwardly and vertically extending ribs 4 provided with brackets 11 connected by pins 12 to slotted lugs 10 secured to the structural members 8. The roof of the reservoir comprises horizontal beams 25, a top sheet 17 and insulation 18 carried on an expanded aluminium sheet 19 and is suspended by hangers 23 from ribs 22 anchored to piers 20 on top of the wall 3, concrete blocks 24 being provided to counteract any upward thrust. Strips of polyethylene or polyvinylchloride foam 14 are attached to the lower end of the membrane.
