Abstract

In apparatus for supplying liquid fuel to a compression ignition internal combustion engine comprising a shuttle piston 17 metering the supply of fuel to injection plungers 12 feeding fuel to the engine and a cylindrical stop member 28 the portion 27 of which determines the maximum outward movement of the shuttle in its cylinder, the position of the stop member is controlled by means responsive to the pressure of air entering the inlet manifold of the engine. The shuttle 17 is moved inwardly and outwardly in cylinder 16 by fuel supplied by a feed pump 22 via grooves in the distributer 11 and passages in the pump body 10 and the outward movement is controlled by a throttle (42, Fig. 2, not shown), in the passages to the inner end of the cylinder. The stop member 28 is moved against the bias of spring 29 by a diaphragm 34 acting through a rod 31 and a conical member 30. The diaphragm housing 32, 35 communicates via a union 37 with the inlet of the inlet manifold of the engine, which is pressurized by a supercharger, and the opposite side of the diaphragm is subject to atmospheric pressure via holes in housing part 32. In a further embodiment, Figs.4 and 5 (not shown), for an unsupercharged engine the maximum outward movement of the shuttle (17) is determined by a pin (50) which is acted on by the end plate of a partially evacuated bellows (58), via a plunger (48) and rod (53). The bellows is mounted in a housing (54, 56) which communicates with the atmosphere through holes (61).
