Abstract

The quantity of fuel injected into the engine intake manifold is automatically regulated to match the quantity of air entering the engine air intake. A feed pump 16 delivers fuel at constant pressure via a flow control valve 19 to one end of the cylinder 21 of a hydraulic plunger, and the fuel injection pump 13 draws fuel from the same end of the cylinder. The plunger rod 26 of the cylinder is coupled to the stroke control member 14 of the injection pump. The valve 19 is coupled to an auxiliary butterfly valve 31, upstream of the main throttle valve 30, the valve 31 being controlled by an aneroid device 32, so that the fuel flow rate into the cylinder 21 is regulated in accordance with the mass air flow rate into the air intake, and the difference between the fuel flow rate into the cylinder 21 and the fuel demand by the injection pump moves the plunger piston 22 to regulate the stroke length of the injection pump 13 in the sense to reduce that difference to zero. Since the injection pump 13 is engine- driven, its overall fuel delivery rate is then controlled automatically in dependence on the air intake of the engine. Overriding controls (41 and 51), Fig.2 (not shown), may be provided for increasing the fuel delivery on cold starting and for acceleration. <IMAGE>
