A process for the desulfurization of an aromatic hydrocarbon, containing fractions containing from 1 to 50 parts per thousand by weight of sulfur without appreciable hydrogenation of the aromatic hydrocarbons, characterized in that it comprises the passage of the fraction in liquid phase or vapor , and in the presence of hydrogen, on a nickel supported at an elevated temperature and pressure such that the sulfur combines with the nickel but without producing a substantial amount of hydrogen sulfide, the equilibrium of the hydrogen partial pressure being greater than the minimum necessary to prevent deactivation of the catalyst but less than that in which 10 mol per hundred hydrogenation of the aromatic hydrocarbons is produced.
