Abstract

A microwave source, e.g. a magnetron 32, is matched to waveguides 41, 42 feeding a microwave oven 19 by means of a progressive variation in the impedance of the waveguide 40 in the neighbourhood of the T-junction with the co-axial feeder 38. This may take the form of arcuate inserts disposed against the narrow sides of the waveguide 40 on either side of the antenna 39 whereby the broad dimension of the waveguide is reduced to the diameter of the outer conductor 38 (Figs. 2, 3, not shown). The oven is fed with generally ellipticallypolarized microwave energy by means of mutually-orthogonal oblique slots 43, 44 covered with insulative tape 60. The magnetron 32 is cooled and the oven ventilated by means of a fan 35. Apertures 63 are provided in the wall of housing 10 and further apertures (not shown) in the wall 22 of the oven to allow circulation of air. A closure 26 for the oven comprises a layer 30 of dissipative material. The closure carries an arm, (65 Fig. 8, not shown) which short-circuits a pair of power switch contacts (68) outside the oven when the oven is closed. Food to be heated is supported upon a revolving table 55 of low-loss dielectric material.
