Abstract

[Also in Division H1] A microwave cooker includes a metallic cooking oven 12, Fig. 1; a waveguide 24 for coupling a magnetron 44 to antenna 16, 18 within the oven; and a fan 38 to force air over cooling fins 42 of the magnetron, into the waveguide through pipes 48 and into the oven 12 to ensure that grease and vapours from food cannot enter the waveguide and are instead forced out through openings 52 in the oven wall. Antenna 16, 18 may be heated by an electric current. Waveguide 24 is coupled to antenna 16, 18 through an output probe 28 and a coaxial sleeve 26, probe 28 being connected to antenna 16, 18 through a metal bar 30 (see Fig. 2). The output probe of the magnetron extends into a shield 46, Fig. 4, inserted in the waveguide. A coupling disc 58, Fig. 4, threaded on to the magnetron at 56 is releasably locked around an opening 64 of the waveguide through locks 66 biased to the right by springs 74 and operated through rotatable levers 72. The dimension of the surface of disc 58 abutting the confronting wall of the waveguide is # #/4 to prevent leakage. The cooling fins 42 comprise a pair of opposed packages of stacked aluminium plates (80, Fig. 7), the inner edges being circular and conforming to the curvature of the anode (86, Fig. 6) of the magnetron, and the magnetron being supported between the packages through end-plates (88) clamped by snap-rings (89, Fig. 6). Silicon grease may be coated on the circular edges of the plates to enhance contact. A switch (182, Fig. 3) mounted in the magnetron compartment 34, Fig. 1, connects elements 16, 18 to a current supply through a cord (184, Fig. 3) and plug (186) and the magnetron power supply 36 to the magnetron cable 104. The switch can be operated by separate knobs, or by a single knob 180 through a shaft, the arrangement allowing microwave and/or resistance cooking. The fan motor 40 is connected via switch (182) to cord (184) through a switch that remains closed in all but the "off" position of knob 180, so that the fan 38 is always running when the oven is "on".
