Abstract

An alternator suitable for road vehicles comprises both a stator assembly and one rotor shaft bearing 43 carried by a main casing 41 to which is secured, e.g. by rivets (54), Fig. 2, a body part 53 which supports the other bearing 56 for the rotor shaft 44, a full-wave rectifier 76 for rectifying the output of stator windings 12, and a voltage regulator and brush box 75 through which current is supplied via slip rings 18, 19 on the shaft to a field winding (21) on the rotor 51. The rotor is of the interdigitated type and is associated with the internal fan 61 and slip ring assembly forming the subject of Specification 1,113,428. The units 75, 76 are enclosed by a cover 71 which clips on to lugs (72), Fig. 2, of the part 53 whose integral extension 55 houses the bearing 56 and defines the compartments (73, 74) containing the units. The unit 75 comprises a synthetic resin moulding carrying brushes 79, 80 and the voltage regular components shown in the circuit of Fig. 1 which components are interconnected by a printed circuit board. The stator laminations 47, each comprising three parts subtending 120 degrees, are externally slotted to receive clips 48 securing them together and to the casing 41.
