Abstract

A press has a die-carrying bolster 24 movable from a loading position 12 to a working position 10 inside the press, and means 40 are provided for lifting the bolster and attaching it to the press. Two loading positions 12 are provided at opposite ends of the press between which two or more bolsters 24 are driven along rails 11 by individual traction motors (32), Fig. 3 (not shown) and gearing 35. In an upstroke press, the slide (20) runs in V-guides (18), Fig. 3 (not shown), and is actuated through rods (21), Figs. 4-8 (not shown), by mechanism in the press head 22. When in the working position, spring-biased pivoted members 40 on the bolster are actuated by a motor (88), Fig. 3 (not shown), through shafts (89), (90), crank-shafts (62) and connecting rods (61) to first pivot the members 40 outwardly, Fig. 6 (not shown), engage the slide (20), Fig. 7 (not shown), and then raise the bolster off the rails 11 and secure it positively to the slide, Fig. 8 (not shown). Three-directional location is provided and the members are locked by wedges (52). The motors (32), (88) are stopped by limit switches. When used in a downstroke press, the bolster is fixed to the press pillars 14.
