Abstract

In a plant for irradiating batches of articles in containers 13, Fig. la, on an endless conveyer 10, the movement is periodically interrupted for preselected intervals of time in order to control the radiation dose without running the conveyer continuously at low speeds. The electric motor 20 driving the conveyer is controlled from a switch 30 having a roller 31 engaged by spaced projections 11 on the conveyer and is associated with a time base (36), Fig. 1c (not shown), which controls the switchedoff period. A second time base (43) is associated with a safety device for automatically lowering the irradiation bars 3 into the pit 5 in the event of the conveyer not moving within the limited time intervals. The containers 13 are fed singly to the conveyer on an inclined roller way 15 and are hooked in pairs on spaced support bars 12. They are discharged singly under their own momentum down an inclined roller way 17 at the side of the roller way 15 and the containers remaining on the support bars 12 are successively pushed to one side to permit the next container to be received from the roller-way 15.
