Abstract
Tow or silver of continuous or discontinuous filaments of vinyl alcohol polymers is crimped by humidifying the tow etc. with water vapour under conditions such that no liquid water comes into contact with the filaments and that the tow leaving the humidifying treatment is at a temperature of 70-150 DEG C. and has a degree of humidity at least 2% (but not more than the degree of sorption), immediately thereafter mechanically crimping the tow in a compression chamber heated e.g. by heating the surface of the entry rolls, so that the temperature of the tow etc. in the chamber is 80-150 DEG C., and then cooling e.g. below 50 DEG C., the tow etc. while it is still in the compressed state. The tow etc. may be humidified by passage over a body of hot (80-100 DEG C.) water or through a heated chamber containing a mixture of water vapour and air e.g. wherein the temperature is 90 DEG C. and the degree of humidity around the tow etc. is 80%, and the duration of the treatment is preferably not less than 2.5 seconds.
