Abstract

A loose cover for a vehicle or other seat and having an underlayer of a knitted fabric and an outer layer 18 of a thermoplastic material is formed by stretching the under layer over a rigid wooden former 22, placing an outer layer 18 formed from a sheet 26 of plasticized polyvinyl chloride coated with heat sensitive adhesive 28 over the under layer, the sheet 26 being clamped in a frame 30 to form with the table 24 and sides 32 of the machine a sealed region 34, heating the sheet 26 by heaters 38 and evacuating air from the region 34 through conduits 36 to suck the layer on to the underlayer and bond it thereto. A sheet of foam plastic 42 may be locally secured to the cover by high frequency welds 44 and may be secured to the seat padding 50 by adhesive 54, the edges of the cover 16 being wrapped around the edge 48 of the seat belt and a resilient channel member 56 clipped over the edges (Fig. 6).
