Abstract

A padding machine for dyeing and like treatment of loose textile stock, e.g. unspun fibres, slivers or tow, comprises an endless belt 1 shaped at 2 to hold a pool of treatment liquor in advance of the nip between padding rollers 3, 6, and itself passing through the nip, and having means for feeding treatment liquor to the material just in front of or even at the point where, with the belt 1, it passes through the nip between the rollers 3, 6, without the material having to pass through the pool of liquor. The material is fed to the nip by sliding down a chute 5, the outer wall of which is either flat, as shown, or curved, and dams up at the bight between the rollers 3, 6 to be taken from there through the nip in a uniform layer. The chute 5 may be mounted in guides to permit adjustment thereof horizontally and vertically and/or angularly and may be vibrated by an electro-magnetic vibrator or an out-of-balance rotor. The material is driven away from the extreme ends of the rollers 3, 6 by fillets 12, Fig. 3 (not shown), provided at the inner corners of the chute 5. The dye liquor may be sprayed on to the material by at least one sprinkler pipe 7 adjustable to various positions. The liquor sprayed on to the material is supplemented by liquor applied from the surface of the belt 1 wet with liquor from the pool and/or with expressed liquor running back into the pool. An electronic control including a photo-electric device responding to the level of liquor in the pool is provided and is effective to increase the flow of liquor when the level falls below and decrease the flow when the level rises above a pre-selected optimum position. The roller 3 is driven from a motor shaft 8 and a doctor roll 10 for the roller 6 is driven by a motorized gear unit 11. The treated material is taken by a conveyer 9 to a further treatment zone which may include a steamer 28 which may be as described in Specification 1026382. The concavity 2 in the belt 1 may be formed by causing the margins of the belt to pass over upwardly and outwardly inclined supporting rollers so mounted as to extend transversely of the belt and the centre part of the belt to pass below a series of discs of graded sizes mounted on a cross shaft with the largest one at the centre.
