Abstract

In an arrangement for detecting faults in hollow containers of transparent or translucent material and for rejecting those found to be defective, the containers (bottles) which are successively fed to a test position by a star wheel are rotated during testing, a beam of light is focused on or in the wall of the container, and a wide area sensing device is provided together with an apertured block of "micarta" (Registered Trade Mark) which provides a plurality of paths by which radiant energy reflected by a fault may pass to the sensing device. The wide area sensing device may comprise a group of parallel connected silicon cells and the lines of the paths are arranged to intersect at the focal point of the beam in the wall of the container. The test position may have two such arrangements applying light from a filament lamp at 45 degrees to a horizontal plane and 45 degrees to a vertical plane respectively, a mask being provided to prevent mutual interference.
