Abstract

Transparent objects with an area of symmetry of revolution such as the neck of a glass bottle are inspected to eliminate the faulty bottles from a continuous process. This is performed by rotation of the bottle to obtain the effect of a circular sweep from a luminous beam. The bottle (10) is rotated on a platform (11) which is driven by a pulley (12) in a discontinuous manner to allow time for measurements to be made. A receiving surface (13) comprises an array of cells (DR) arranged to be concave and partially surrounding the area to be examined. These cells operate in conjuction with infra red emitters (DE1-9) arranged three by three to detect horizontal faults while two emitters (DE10, 11) sense vertical faults. An electronic circuit analyses the receiving cell outputs for each cycle of operation.
