933,379. Photo-electric inspection. OWENSILLINOIS GLASS CO. May 18, 1960 [May 29, 1959], No. 17464/60. Class 40 (3). In an apparatus for detecting " line over finish " flaws (voids) in the rim 11 of a transparent container, a beam of light is passed through a part of the rim and at an acute angle to the radial plane of that part. A lightresponsive element 17 is mounted so that it does not receive light transmitted through the rim when there is no flaw therein. The element 17 receives only light which is both reflected and refracted by a flaw. Details of the housing arrangements for the light-responsive element and the light source 15 are given. Polarizing filters are used to control the amount of light passing to the light-responsive element, the output of which operates a rejection mechanism if a flaw is detected.
