Abstract

1 - Carboxymethyl - 3,5 - dimethylol - 2,6-dihydro-triazine-4-one is prepared by reacting formaldehyde with urea and glycine in the presence of sodium hydroxide, in aqueous solution.ALSO:Fabrics consisting at least in part of cotton, linen or viscose rayon are crease proofed by impregnating them with an aqueous solution containing a 1-substituted-3, 5-dimethylol-2, 6-dihydrotriazine-4-one having the formula N(R)-CH2-N(CH2OH)-CO-N(CH2OH)-CE in which R is an alkyl, alkylene, alkenyl, haloalkyl, haloalkenyl, hydroxyalkyl, carboxyalkyl, cycloaliphatic or arolkyl radical and an acid catalyst, partially drying them so that their moisture content is above 6% by weight for cotton and linen fabrics and above 10% by weight for viscose rayon fabrics holding them in a smooth crease free condition for a period of at least 2 hours at a temperature of 10 DEG -50 DEG C. during which reaction takes place while the fibres are still in a swollen state and then washing to remove surplus reactant and catalyst and drying. When R is an alkylene radical it may be substituted with another triazone group to form a bis-triazone. The catalyst may be an acid, e.g. hydrochloric acid, or acid composition capable of producing a pH value of 0.5-3.0 in the treating solution. After impregnation the fabric may be partially dried so that its residual moisture content is above 6% by weight for cotton and linen fabrics and above 10% by weight for viscose rayon fabrics, wound or a mandrel to form a roll, wrapped in a polythene sheet, held in the crease-free condition for at least 2 hours at 10 DEG -50 DEG C., heat treated for 1-5 minutes at 150 DEG -90 DEG C., washed first with dilute alkali and then dried.
