Abstract

A durable patterned mechanical effect, e.g. schreinering, embossing or pleating, together with high wet crease recovery is imparted to fabrics consisting at least in part of cotton, linen or viscose rayon by impregnating them with an aqueous solution containing a dimethylol triazane having the formula N(R)-CH2-N(CH2OH)-CO-N(CH2OH)-CH2 in which R is an alkyl, alkylene, alkenyl, haloalkyl, haloalkenyl, hydroxyalkyl, carboxyalkyl, cycloaliphatics or aralkyl radical, and an acid catalyst, e.g. hydrochloric acid, partially drying them to a moisture content which is not less than 6% by weight for a cotton or linen fabric and not less than 10% by weight for a viscose rayon fabric, applying the desired mechanical effect, holding the treated fabrics in a smooth condition free from unwanted creases for a period of at least 2 hours at a temperature of 10 DEG -50 DEG C. during which reaction takes place while the fibres are still in a swollen state, washing to remove surplus reactant and catalyst and drying. The radical R may be methyl, ethyl, n-propyl, 2-chloroethyl, 2-bromoethyl, 2, 3-dibromopropyl, 2-bromoallyl, 2-hydroxyethyl, 2-hydroxypropyl, carboxymethyl, cyclohexyl or benzyl and when R is an alkylene radical it may be substituted with another triazane group to form a bis-triazane. The fabric may be heat-treated, for example for 1-5minutes at 150 DEG -90 DEG C., after the lying period and before washing, either with or without further intermediate drying, to impart dry crease recovery as well as wet crease recovery. After the mechanical treatment the fabric may be wound on a mandrel to form a roll, wrapped in a polythene sheet, held in the crease free condition for at least 2 hours at a temperature of 10 DEG -50 DEG C., washed first with dilute alkali and then with water and dried.
