Abstract

A high molecular weight rubbery homopolymer of butadiene-1.3 having at least 80% of its monomer units joined in the cis-1.4 configuration is heated with two or more parts of a C12- 18 acrylic carboxylic acid per 100 parts of the polymer at 200 to 400 DEG F. There may also be present per 100 parts of polybutadiene, two or more parts of a non-heat-reactive phenol-formaldehyde resin, a para-tertiary-butyl phenol-acetylene resin or a disproportionated, hydrogenated or esterified abietic acid resin or 5 or more parts of a solid polybutene polymer, a liquid or solid copolymer of butadiene with acrylonitrile, a solid rubbery copolymer of butadiene with styrene extended with an extender oil, a liquid butadiene polymer, a hydroxylated liquid butadiene polymer, a xylyl mercaptans or blends of two or more or blends of one or more with 2 or more parts of pine tar. Specified carboxylic acids are lauric, oleic and stearic acids and they are preferably used in amounts from 2 to 15 parts per 100 rubber. The usual compounding agents may be present and the mixture vulcanized.
