Abstract

A mixture of polystyrene and from 20 to 50 per cent. an elastomeric copolymer of a butadiene hydrocarbon and an alkyl ester of an aliphatic mono-olefinic carboxylic acid, the percentage being 20 per cent. when the intrinsic viscosity of the polystyrene is 1.5 or more, 25 per cent. when from 1.0 to 1.5 and 30 per cent. when less than 1.0 down to 0.6. Specified butadiene hydrocarbons are butadiene-1:3, piperylene, isoprene and 2.3-dimethylbutadiene and specified esters are methyl acrylate, ethyl acrylate, methyl methacrylate and diethyl fumarate although esters of citraconic, mesaconic, itaconic and aconitic acids may be used. It is preferred that the elastomeric copolymer contains 60-85 mol. per cent. butadiene and 40-15 alkyl ester, and that this copolymer is present in amounts from 20-40 per cent. with from 80-60 per cent. of the polystyrene. Pigments and fillers may also be present.
