Abstract

The stability of catalytically cracked gasoline containing phenols and thiophenols is improved by first oxidizing the thiophenols to diphenyl sulphides in the presence of an organic oxidation catalyst (usually at ambient temperatures and pressures), and then treating the thiophenol-free gasoline with an alkaline solution, suitably having a strength below 25 DEG B<\>ae., suitably 2 DEG -20 DEG B<\>ae., so that at least a portion of the phenols are removed, separating the treated gasoline and then preferably treating it with a further alkaline solution of strength greater than 25 DEG B<\>ae., suitably 30 DEG -50 DEG B<\>ae., so that 10-90%, generally 30-70%, of the phenols still present are removed. The preferred catalyst is cobalt or vanadium phthalocyanine sulphonate, but metal free phthalocyanine, unsulphonated metal phthalocyanines or carboxylated metal phthalocyanines and metal chelates of disalicyladiaminoalkanes may also be used. Preferred alkaline solution are aqueous and/or C1-4-alkanolic solutions of sodium and potassium hydroxide. The catalyst may be prepared by treating a carrier with an alkaline solution of the substance suitable carriers are charcoal, coke, carbon Raschig rings, and solica and/or alumina and may take any suitable form.
