Tobacco packaging

The invention relates to a packaging for tobacco, in particular for loose tobacco used for own manufacture or for rolling cigarettes.

A conventional packaging for loose tobacco is designed as a soft bag with a flap to close the access opening of the bag.

Document US-A-1 683 664 discloses a package comprising the characteristics of the preamble of claim 1.

A plurality of flanges for placing cigarettes in a package that has a folding lid is known from US-A-2004 217023.

The aim of the invention is to create a tobacco packaging that has an appearance or design very different from that of a conventional bag and that can provide additional options to improve utility, accessibility to tobacco and freshness.

This objective is achieved by a tobacco package as defined in claim 1. Advantageous versions of the invention are deduced from the dependent claims.

The packaging according to the invention comprises a receptacle and a closure structure. The receptacle is adapted to contain loose tobacco and includes a front side, a rear wall, a first and second major side walls opposite each other, and a first and second minor side walls opposite each other. An access opening is provided on the front side of the receptacle. The closing structure can be moved relative to the receptacle from a closed position, in which the closing structure closes the access opening, to an open position, in which the access opening can be accessed.

In this context, the side walls generally have a smaller surface area than the front wall and the back wall. The "larger" side walls are generally longer than the "smaller" side walls. The terms "first" and "second" apply only to the definition title; They could also be exchanged.

The packaging according to the invention can have dimensions similar to a conventional cigarette pack and can look similar to it, which is very different from a bag and makes it attractive. In addition, the hard box character of the packaging provides greater overall stability.

The access opening may be provided in a front wall of the receptacle, the area of the access opening being smaller than the area of the front wall of the receptacle. Said design improves the rigidity of the packaging.

In the packaging according to the invention, the receptacle includes a partition wall that essentially runs parallel to the first major side wall and that divides the receptacle into a first and a second partition. The second partition of the receptacle may optionally be subdivided by at least one additional partition wall, which preferably runs parallel to the aforementioned partition wall. The closure structure comprises a front wall, a rear wall, and a first and second minor side walls opposite each other. In the closed position, the closing structure surrounds the receptacle. The closing structure, to be transferred to the open position, can slide with respect to the receptacle to expose the access opening of the receptacle on the side of the first partition. Additionally, the closing structure, to be transferred to a second open position, can slide with respect to the receptacle in the opposite direction to expose the access opening of the receptacle on the side of the second partition. Stop means are provided that limit the relative movement of the closure structure and the receptacle on both sides.

In this packaging, the first partition may contain loose tobacco. It is also possible to place a conventional bag full of tobacco inside the first partition. The second partition comprises a support fixed to the inner side of the second major side wall and designed with a profiled area adapted to hold at least one of its own manufactured cigarettes. The second partition can also be used, for example, for a cigarette paper booklet, a lighter, or filter tips. The additional partition walls mentioned above may provide compartments for housing said items and keeping them in good order.

The side wall of the receptacle on the side of the second partition can be designed so that it can be pivoted downward to improve access to the second partition, the inner side of this wall comprising the aforementioned profiled area intended to be used for storage ( in an orderly or separate manner), for example, filter tips or prepared cigarettes.

Generally, a sound production device adapted to produce a sound when the receptacle is moved with respect to the closing structure or the lid provides an interesting effect. The sound producing device may comprise at least one tongue that protrudes from the receptacle or the closure structure or the lid, this tongue interfering with an antagonistic part during the corresponding movement to produce a sound. This tab can also help fix the lid in its closed position.

In addition, the packaging according to the invention may comprise at least one beveled or rounded edge, for example, in the receptacle or in the closure structure. Such rounded edges can provide an attractive effect.

In advantageous embodiments of the invention, a maintenance film in the fresh state (for example, a plastic film or a laminated material or an aluminum film) is provided in the receptacle or in the access opening of the receptacle for the purpose to keep the tobacco fresh and keep its moisture content, at least partially. When the access opening is closed by a maintenance film in the fresh state, it can be opened manually or automatically when accessing the receptacle. In the previous case, the maintenance film in the fresh state can be fixed on an edge of the access opening so that it can be lifted manually; optionally, release means such as a pressure sensitive adhesive may be provided. The manufacture of the receptacle can also be conceived from a material that has inherent maintenance properties in the fresh state, for example, from laminated or coated cardboard.

Cardboard is a preferred material for packaging according to the invention. The packaging or parts thereof can be cut from an appropriate blank, folded and glued, as is well known in the art. Materials other than cardboard, for example plastic or laminated material, can also be used.

The application of a maintenance film in the fresh state in the access opening of a package has already been explained above. Generally, it is also possible to provide a resealable fresh maintenance film in the access opening of the receptacle (for example, a film that interacts with a self-adhesive edge of the access opening), which the consumer partially tears before taking the tobacco of the receptacle and close again when finished.

Figure 1 illustrates a first packing for tobacco by means of three isometric views, that is, Figure 1 (a), Figure 1 (b) and Figure 1 (c).

The packaging 100 comprises a box-shaped receptacle 110 having a front wall 112, a rear wall 114, a first major side wall 116, a second major side wall 117, a first minor side wall 118 and a second minor side wall 119 In the front wall 112 of the receptacle 110, an access opening 120 is provided. The total area of the access opening 120 is smaller than the area defined by the outer edges of the front wall 112.

The inner faces of the receptacle 110 are covered by a maintenance film 122 in the fresh state, which extends somewhat beyond the edges of the access opening 120, such that it is visible in Figure 1 (c).

The access opening 120 can be closed by means of a flap 130. The flap 130 is optimally seen in Figure 1 (c) in which it is fully deployed.

The flap 130 is connected to the receptacle 110 through an articulation line 131 located on the side of the first major side wall 116, that is, in the embodiment, at its common edge with the rear wall 114. The flap 130 comprises a first side panel 132 to which a main panel 134 is connected through a folding line 133. The main panel 134 has approximately the size of the front wall 112. Through another folding line 135, a second side panel 136 is connected to the main panel 134 of the flap 130.

The main panel 134 is reinforced by a reinforcing structure 138 made of heavy cardboard. Alternatively, a soft sealing pad could be used instead of the reinforcing structure 138.

A booklet 140 of conventional cigarette paper, comprising a folding cover 142 and a plurality of cigarette papers, is fixed to the outer side of the second side panel 136 of the flap 130, see Figure 1 (c).

In addition, the packaging 100 includes a locking lid 150 comprising a main wall 152, as well as four side walls 154, 155, 156 and 157. The locking lid 150 is pivotally connected to the rear wall 114 of the receptacle 110 a through an articulation line 158 located at the free edge of the side wall 155. The distance between the articulation line 158 and the common edge between the rear wall 114 and the second major side wall 117 is less than the height of the wall lateral 155 (measure perpendicular to the main wall 152 of the locking lid 150). Thus, a cavity is formed between the main wall 152 of the locking lid 150 and the second major side wall 117 of the receptacle 110, when the locking lid 150 is in the closed or locked position shown in Figure 1 (a). In the embodiment, the packaging 100 is made of cardboard blank pieces that are folded and glued through tabs arranged in the blank pieces. Other materials, such as plastic materials, can also be conceived. As already mentioned above, the tobacco accommodated in receptacle 110 is kept fresh by means of the fresh maintenance film 122. In an alternative embodiment, the fresh state maintenance film 122 is replaced by a fresh state maintenance coating applied to the inner face of the receptacle 110 and, instead of the cardboard reinforcement structure 138, a pad is used which can Widely seal the access opening 120 and also reinforce the packaging 100. In Figure 1 (a), the closure structure consisting of the flap 130 and the locking lid 150 is in a closed position. Due to its structure comprising four side walls 154, 155, 156 and 157, the locking lid 150 firmly blocks the folded flap 130 when it is in the closed position.

In Figure 1 (b), the locking lid has been pivoted to an unlocked position in which the cigarette paper booklet 140 is exposed. In this state, a user can take a single cigarette paper from the booklet 140 of cigarette paper and prepare it to roll a cigarette.

In the next step, the user can deploy the flap 130 until the packaging 100 assumes the final state shown in Figure 1 (c). Now, the user can conveniently take tobacco from receptacle 110 through the exposed access opening 120 and terminate the cigarette wrapping process. The size of the access opening 220 can be increased by swinging the front wall 212 out of the rear wall 214. To this end, the front wall 212 is connected to the side walls 216 and 217 through extensions of the carton type 222, 223 and 224, 225, respectively, see Figure 2 (c). The front wall 212 can be pivoted around an articulation line 226 that is located in the area of the bottom wall 218, but not exactly at an edge of the bottom wall 218, such that a fixed front panel 228 is formed. When the front wall 212 is pivoted around the articulation line 226, the carton-like extensions 222, 223, 224, 225 fold in a fan-like manner. In a variant of this embodiment, the articulation line for pivoting the front wall is exactly located at the lower edge.

In addition, an upper panel 230 is foldably connected to the upper edge of the front wall 212 through an articulation line 232. On the front wall 212 there is provided a tongue 234 protruding outwardly and extending downwardly, it is say, to the right side in figure 2 (b).

The package 200 comprises a closure structure designed as a cover 240. The cover 240 includes an upper wall 242 and a front wall 244 and is connected to the upper edge of the rear wall 214 through an articulation line 246. When not in use, the lid 240 of the packaging 200 is in the closed position shown in Figure 2 (a). Finally, the consumer deploys the front wall 212, see Figure 2 (c), so that a large access opening 220 is obtained for easy removal of the tobacco.

To close the package 200, the actions described above are reversed.

The tobacco packaging illustrated in Figure 3 is similar to that shown in Figure 2.

In Figure 3, the package 300 comprises a receptacle 310 comprising a folding front wall 312, a rear wall 314, a first side wall 316, a second side wall 317, a bottom wall 318 and an access opening 320 opposite the bottom wall 318.

The size of the access opening 320 can be increased by swinging the front wall 312 out of the rear wall 314. In this embodiment, the carton-like extensions 322, 323, 324 and 325 do not extend to the upper edge of the wall front 312 and the upper edges of the first side wall 316 and the second side wall 317, respectively. The front wall 312 can be pivoted around an articulation line 326 at the upper edge of a fixed front panel 328, near the bottom wall 318.

In the packaging according to Figure 3, two inserts 330 and 331 are glued to the interior of the receptacle 310 in order to increase the height of the first side wall 316 and the second side wall 317.

The closure structure of the package 300 is formed by a cover 340, which comprises an upper wall 342, a front wall 344, a rear wall 346, a side wall 348 and another side wall 349. The cover 340 is pivotally connected to the receptacle 310 through an articulation line 350 located at the lower edge of the rear wall 346 of the cover 340 and the upper edge of the rear wall 314 of the receptacle 310. Due to its rigid structure and the presence of the inserts 330 and 331, the cover 340 fixes itself when it is in its closed position, so that there is no need for a tongue 234 in the packaging of Figure 2. However, an optional tongue or other locking means can improve the stability of the packaging in the closed position of the lid and may also indicate the action of opening or closing the packaging by a noise. General examples of suitable fixing devices are discussed in advance.

Packaging 300 is used in the same manner as packaging 200. Figure 3 (a) shows the lid 340 in its closed position. In Figure 3 (b) it is partially open, and the front wall 312 is partially unfolded. In the views according to Figure 3 (c) and Figure 3 (d), the front wall 312 is pivoted almost completely out of the rear wall 314, so that easy access to the interior of the package 300 is possible.

The packaging 400 comprises a box-shaped receptacle 410 having a front wall 412, a rear wall 414, a first major side wall 416, a second major side wall 417, a first minor side wall 418 and a second minor side wall 419 An access opening 420 is arranged in the front wall 412, the area of the access opening being somewhat smaller than the total area of the front wall 412.

The access opening 420 can be covered by a fresh maintenance film 422. The opposite edge of the fresh maintenance film 422 is fixed in a second fastening area 425 located inside a closure structure 430.

The closure structure 430 comprises a front wall 432, a rear wall 434, a first minor side wall 438 and a second minor side wall 439. The receptacle 410 can be plugged into the closure structure 430, such that a position is assumed. closed in which the closing structure 430 surrounds the receptacle 410, see Figure 4 (a), and the fresh maintenance film 422 covers the access opening 420.

In order to expose the access opening 420, the closing structure 430 moves with respect to the receptacle 410. Figure 4 (b) shows an intermediate position. During this movement, the fresh maintenance film 422 folds back automatically, thereby releasing the access opening 420.

A stop structure prevents the closing structure 430 from separating from the receptacle 410 after transferring it to the open position. In Figures 4 (c) and 4 (d), this stop structure has been interlocked in order to show the receptacle 410 and the closure structure 430 in a separate state and allow a view of the parts of the stop structure. In Figure 4 (c), the maintenance film 422 in the fresh state is still connecting the receptacle 410 and the closing structure 430, while, in Figure 4 (d), the maintenance film 422 in the fresh state has been removed to provide a better view.

The stop structure comprises a tongue 440 cut from the blank forming the receptacle 410 in an area of a recess 442. The tongue 440 interacts with a flap 444 folded back from an edge of the rear wall 434 of the structure of closure 430, see, in particular, figure 4 (d). When the receptacle 410 is inserted into the closure structure 430 and moves towards the open position, the tongue 440 grips the flap 444, and the stop structure stops the additional movement when the tip of the tongue 440 reaches the line of flap folding 444.

In the closed position, the fresh maintenance film 422 covers the access opening 420 and prevents the receptacle 410 from moving out of the closure structure 430 in the opposite direction. In a variant of the packaging shown in Figure 4, the closure structure 430 comprises a larger side wall that provides a stop when the receptacle 410 is fully plugged into the closed position. This larger side wall may be provided with a recess to push on the receptacle 410 when the package 400 is to be opened.

Figure 5 shows an embodiment of the packaging that is very similar to the packaging of Figure 4. However, the packaging 500 of Figure 5 is opened by moving the receptacle in parallel to the larger side walls rather than in parallel to the minor side walls.

To summarize, the package 500 comprises a receptacle 510 having a front wall 512, a rear wall 514, a first major side wall 516, a second major side wall 517, a first minor side wall 518 and a second minor side wall 519. The packages according to figure 4 and figure 5 can be folded from blank cardboard pieces. As before, the moisture of loose tobacco accommodated in packages 400 and 500 can be widely preserved by fresh maintenance films (also inside the receptacle; not shown in the figures) or by an appropriate coating or by the choice of material for the receptacle and closing structure.

Figure 6 illustrates an embodiment of a tobacco packaging, designated by the reference number 600. The basic concept of the packaging 600 is similar to that of the packaging 400, but the receptacle can slide with respect to the closure structure, in parallel with the minor side walls, in both directions, such that two partitions of the receptacle can be exposed independently of each other.

The packaging 600 comprises a receptacle 610 in which the total front wall is designed as an access opening 612. In addition, the receptacle 610 includes a rear wall 614, a first major side wall 616, a second major side wall 617, a first wall minor side 618 and a second minor side wall 619.

The receptacle 610 is subdivided by a partition wall 620 (which runs parallel to the first major side wall 616) into a first partition 621 and a second partition 622. The first partition 621 is designed to accommodate loose tobacco. The second partition 622 is subdivided by additional partition walls 624 and 625 in order to store, for example, a cigarette paper booklet and other small items that a consumer likes when preparing the cigarettes. In the state shown in Figure 6 (d), the receptacle 610 has been separated from the closing structure 630. In a variant of this embodiment, a stop structure is provided that blocks an additional movement of the closing structure 630 with with respect to receptacle 610 beyond the open position shown in Figure 6 (b) and the second open position shown in Figure 6 (c), respectively. For example, the stop structure may comprise a projection on one or both minor side walls 618, 619 of receptacle 610.
