Abstract

A hydrocarbon fuel for use in a diesel or spark ignition combustion engine contains 0,5 to 25 milligrams per litre of copper as a dissolved copper compound, 0,5 to 15 milligrams per litre of zinc as a dissolved zinc compound, lead as a dissolved lead compound in an amount from 2 to 3 times the combined weight of the copper and zinc, a brominated hydrocarbon in an amount such that the fuel contains 10 to 100% of the bromine required to form bromides of the copper, zinc and lead in which the metals are in their highest valency states, and/or a chlorinated hydrocarbon in an amount such that the fuel contains 20 to 200% of the chlorine required to form chlorides of copper, zinc and lead in which the metals are in their highest valency states. In examples petrol and diesel fuels contain copper naphthenate, zinc naphthenate, lead naphthenate, monobromobenzene, ethylene dibromide, chlorobenzene and ethylene dichloride.
