EN ESTE PROCEDIMIENTO DE DESCONTAMINACION LA SUPERFICIE CONTAMINADA CON SUBSTANCIAS RADIOACTIVAS COMO COMPONENTES DEL CIRCUITO REFRIGERADOR DE UN REACTOR SE TRATA EN UNA PRIMERA ETAPA CON UNA SOLUCION DE DESCONTAMINACION ACUOSA CONTENIENDO ACIDO CROMICO Y ACIDO PERMANGANICO A UNA TEMPERATURA ENTRE 270 Y 350 K. LAS CAPAS SUPERFICIALES CONTAMINADAS SE OXIDAN CON ACIDO PERMANGENICO Y EL ACIDO CROMICO ACTUA PARA QUE DICHAS CAPAS SUPERFICIALES OXIDADAS NO SE ADHIERAN ENTRE ELLAS. EN UNA SEGUNDA ETAPA DE TRATAMIENTO SE ELIMINA LAS CAPAS SUPERFICIALES OXIDADAS MEDIANTE UN TRATAMIENTO QUIMICO A UNA TEMPERATURA SIMILAR A LA ETAPA ANTERIOR Y MEDIANTE DILUCION Y/O SE QUITAN MEDIANTE UNA ACCION HIDRAULICA O MECANICA. PARA EL TRATAMIENTO QUIMICO DE LA SEGUNDA ETAPA SON APROPIADAS SOLUCIONES ACUOSAS DE ACIDOS ORGANICOS COMO TAMBIEN SE PUEDEN ADICIONAR REDUCTORES Y FORMADORES DE COMPLEJOS E INHIBIDORES DE CORROSION.
