Definitions

  • the present invention relates to a lock for doors of vehicles.
  • vehicles for professional use such as vans, trucks, lorries, semi-trailer trucks, trailers and the like, are usually provided with a closed body, which is rendered integral with the chassis of the vehicle and which defines inside it a compartment for accommodating goods of a various nature.
  • Access to the compartment is controlled by a swinging door, arranged at an opening provided in the rear wall or in a lateral wall of the body.
  • a swinging door arranged at an opening provided in the rear wall or in a lateral wall of the body.
  • the door is kept in the closed configuration of the opening by a lock, mounted on the external facade of the door proper.
  • the lock in fact is provided with a spring latch that, when the door is in the closed configuration, can be engaged under a roller arranged in a recess provided on the wall, along a lateral edge of the opening.
  • the roller prevents any subsequent movement of the spring latch and therefore of the door, thus keeping the latter so as to close the opening.
  • the lock also has an actuation lever, which can be gripped and made to rotate by the user, in order to command the translation of the spring latch and enable the door to be opened.
  • Such type of lock is usually accompanied by other contrivances and accessories, including in particular a system that couples and decouples the spring latch to/from the lever on command, in order to allow the door to be opened only by the holder of a key (which is necessary to render the spring latch and the lever at least temporarily integral).
  • Solutions of this type are widespread in many categories of professional vehicles, including for example in vehicles intended for transporting frozen goods or goods that in any case require conservation in a refrigerated compartment.
  • the lock comprises a first plate which is rendered integral with the door, on which the spring latch can slide in a guided manner and on which some components of the system for coupling and decoupling mentioned above are likewise mounted.
  • a contoured second plate is then applied, which supports the lever so that it can rotate and which covers the aforementioned system, protecting it from atmospheric agents and, especially, from possible attempts at tampering.
  • the mutual coupling of the two plates is ensured by a plurality of screws, which are inserted into respective aligned slots provided along the perimeter of the two plates.
  • each one of the two plates is responsible for supporting one or more functional components of the plate (the spring latch, the lever, the system for coupling and decoupling, etc.), evidently any modification to the outer plate (which determines the aesthetic impact of the lock) must be carefully evaluated (and is often impossible), because it could compromise the very functionality of the lock.
  • the lever is still rotatably supported by the second plate at a pin that is kept visible and accessible from outside, like the aforementioned screws.
  • Such pin and the screws can therefore potentially be attacked by ill-intentioned individuals and in any case they are constantly exposed to atmospheric agents (and therefore they are subject to wear and deterioration).
  • the aim of the present invention is to solve the above mentioned problems, by providing a lock that offers an attractive design and in which screws, or similar fixing elements, are not exposed.
  • an object of the invention is to provide a lock that can easily be customized.
  • Another object of the invention is to provide a lock that ensures complete and effective protection of its functional components, against atmospheric agents and any attempts at forcing.
  • Another object of the invention is to provide a lock that ensures a high reliability of operation, is compact, and mechanically very strong.
  • Another object of the invention is to provide a lock that adopts an alternative technical and structural architecture to those of conventional locks.
  • Another object of the invention is to provide a lock that can be easily implemented using elements and materials that are readily available on the market.
  • Another object of the invention is to provide a lock that is low cost and safely applied.
  • the reference numeral 1 generally designates a lock for doors of vehicles.
  • Such vehicles are typically for professional use, and therefore of the type of vans, trucks, lorries, semi-trailer trucks, trailers and the like.
  • the vehicles that are the (preferred, but not exclusive) application of the lock 1 have a containment structure, such as a body or the like, which internally defines a compartment for the accommodation and transport of goods of various types.
  • the typical application of the lock 1 is for (doors of) vehicles intended for transporting frozen goods or goods that in any case require conservation in refrigerated compartments.
  • the protection claimed herein should be understood to include the application of the lock 1 on any type of vehicle, be it for professional or other use.
  • Access to the containment structure is controlled by a door, which is usually arranged in a configuration for closing an opening provided along the rear face or along one of the side faces of the structure proper.
  • the containment structure and the door are conventional, and in any case are not part of the invention: for the sake of simplicity they are therefore not shown in the accompanying figures, being in any case easily deducible for any person, skilled or otherwise, in the sector.
  • the lock 1 comprises a base 2 which in turn comprises a flat slab 2a, which can be stably applied to the door of the vehicle (usually along a side of the door proper, so as to be adjacent to a side of the opening, when the latter is closed by the door).
  • the lock 1 comprises a lever 3 for moving a spring latch 4.
  • the spring latch 4 can move between at least one position in which it is protruding (in which it is shown in the accompanying figures) and at least one position in which it is retracted.
  • the spring latch 4 (which extends beyond the contour of the rest of the base 2) can engage with a retention element arranged along the containment structure (along the corresponding side of the opening), in order to keep the door in the closed configuration.
  • the retention element can be a bar or a roller, and be mounted in a recess located along the side of the opening: when the door is in the closed configuration, the spring latch 4 is inserted into the recess and the retention element, by interference, opposes its movement (for as long as the protruding position is maintained), and therefore opposes the rotation of the door.
  • the lock 1 also comprises an assembly 5 for coupling and mutual decoupling of the lever 3 and of the spring latch 4.
  • the assembly 5 can be selectively actuated by way of a respective key-operated mechanism 6.
  • the lock 1 comprises an outer shell 7, which is coupled by interlocking, directly or indirectly, with the base 2 (on the opposite side with respect to the door), in order to cover and protect (at least) the base 2 and the assembly 5. If coupling is direct, then the shell 7 is coupled by interlocking with the base 2 proper, while if coupling is indirect (as in the accompanying figures), the shell 7 is coupled by interlocking with an additional component, which in turn is integral with the base 2.
  • the shell 7 comprises a main plate 7a, which has a shape adapted to cover the slab 2a.
  • a shape adapted to cover the slab 2a As in the accompanying figures, such condition is for example obtained by arranging the plate 7a directed toward the slab 2a, and giving the former a shape that substantially corresponds to the latter.
  • any shape of the plate 7a that covers the slab 2a (when installation is complete) is to be considered covered in the scope of protection claimed herein.
  • the plate 7a is folded along the edges, so as to define a perimetric band 7b, which is placed on the (peripheral region of the) slab 2a.
  • the band 7b extends preferably perpendicularly to the plate 7a and to the slab 2a (but it can also be differently inclined with respect to them).
  • the base 2 further comprises an end lug 2b, which is folded with respect to the slab 2a.
  • first fixing means 8 such as screws, nails and the like
  • the end lug 2b is stably anchored to an end lip 7c of the shell 7, which is folded with respect to the plate 7a and is arranged at a break in continuity of the band 7b, which is provided in order to allow the transit of the spring latch 4 (under the lip 7c).
  • the first means 8 therefore consolidate the interlocking coupling mentioned in the previous paragraphs in order to obtain the stable mutual coupling between the base 2 and the shell 7.
  • first means 8 are constituted by two bolts, in which the respective nuts 8a are fixed inside the lip 7c, with the corresponding screws being inserted from outside.
  • the first means 8 can be in any quantity and be (preferably) sold with the lock 1 or supplied separately.
  • the lock 1 can be supplied or sold already including second fixing means 9, for anchoring the slab 2a to the door, or it can be sold without them.
  • second fixing means 9 for anchoring the slab 2a to the door
  • the second means 9 which in any case can be of the same type as the first means 8 or different, and they can also be in any quantity, according to the specific requirements.
  • the first means 8 are inserted into the lip 7c and into the lug 2b, mutually tightening them: by virtue of the choice to fold such components with respect to the slab 2a and to the plate 7a, the first means 8 are not exposed to view by an observer standing in front of the door, and the second means 9 are even less exposed to view, as they are completely hidden by the shell 7 (by the plate 7a that covers the slab 2a, into which the second means 9 are inserted).
  • an end tab 10 of the plate 7a extends co-planar beyond the lip 7c, and beyond the outline of the slab 2a.
  • the end tab 10 offers protection to the lug 2b and to the spring latch 4, when the latter is arranged in the protruding position. This prevents or at least complicates any attempts at forcing, since it makes it impossible or in any case problematic to access the recess, the area occupied by the spring latch 4 and the first fixing means 8, which are inserted into the lug 2b.
  • the shell 7, the band 7b and the tab 10 are provided in a single piece, preferably made of steel or sheet metal, and for example by molding or plastic deformation, thus ensuring maximum compactness and mechanical strength.
  • the lip 7c is spot-welded to the shell 7.
  • the base 2 also is preferably, but not exclusively, made of steel or sheet metal.
  • the inner surface of the tab 10, directed toward the slab 2a and the spring latch 4, is lined with at least one layer 10a of elastically deformable material.
  • the layer 10a can thus deaden shocks and noise that may be caused by impact with the retention element, in the event of violent closing of the door.
  • the layer 10a can be constituted by a form of cushion that protrudes internally, to a considerable extent, from the profile of the shell 7, and of the tab 10 in particular.
  • the tab 10 can have a concavity inside it, in which therefore it can accommodate the layer 10a, which in this case protrudes only slightly from the profile of the shell 7.
  • the layer 10a is made of rubber (or in any case made of elastomeric material), be it natural or synthetic.
  • the lock 1 comprises a pillar 11 for rotatably supporting the lever 3.
  • the pillar 11 is stably anchored to the slab 2a and is provided with a seat for the insertion of an articulation pin 12 of the lever 3.
  • the seat can be constituted by two eyelets that are mutually aligned along the rotation axis of the lever 3.
  • the perimetric band 7b has a contoured aperture 13 which is provided on the side opposite the lip 7c.
  • the aperture 13 is shaped complementarily to a corresponding lateral wall 11a of the pillar 11, so as to be able to achieve the coupling by interlocking of the shell 7 with the pillar 11, and therefore indirectly with the base 2.
  • the coupling by interlocking between the shell 7 and the base 2 is therefore indirect, by virtue of the pillar 11 which is coupled to the shell 7 and is integral with the base 2.
  • the pillar 11 also comprises two protrusions 11b ( Figure 5 ) which extend transversely from the lateral wall 11 a, outward, and which define two aligned slots 11c for the insertion of a padlock 14 ( Figure 2 ).
  • the padlock 14 can also be supplied by with the lock 1 or sourced separately.
  • the aperture 13 of the band 7b extends into the plate 7a, so as to define an opening, arranged at the pillar 11, in order to accommodate an end region of the lever 3.
  • the lever 3 is coupled solely to the base 2 (through the pillar 11 and the articulation pin 12), while it does not interact in any way with the shell 7, thus ensuring a solution that is more compact and better protected against attempts at forcing, since the pin 12 and the portion of the lever 3 articulated thereto are hidden and protected by the shell 7 (as can also be seen from Figure 1 ).
  • the key-operated mechanism 6 comprises a rotor 15 that is rotatably accommodated in a stator 16 that is supported by the plate 7a.
  • the coupling and decoupling assembly 5 comprises a slider 20 that can slide along the slab 2a, in alignment with the spring latch 4, as a consequence of the rotation imposed on the lever 3.
  • the connection between the lever 3 and the slider 20 can be achieved in any manner, including using conventional techniques.
  • the slider 20 is made integral with the spring latch 4 by a rod 21, when the latter is fitted in respective openings of the slider 20 and of the spring latch 4.
  • the rod 21 can move transversely to the sliding direction of the slider 20 as a consequence of the rotation of the cam 17, in order to disengage from the spring latch 4 and achieve the decoupling of the latter from the lever 3, and vice versa.
  • the rod 21 is interposed between two wings 22, on each of which the cam 17 can act to move the rod 21 in the two directions.
  • the rod 21 is coupled to a single wing 22 (as can be seen in Figure 6 ), while it is separated from the other one by a break in continuity (not visible in the accompanying figures): when such break is aligned with the slider 20 (as shown in Figure 6 ), this results in the decoupling between the slider 20 and the spring latch 4.
  • the spring latch 4 which in the protruding position engages with the retention element arranged in a recess provided along the containment structure (along the body), proximate to the opening.
  • the spring latch 4 is kept in such position, until the lever 3 is actuated, which causes the sliding of the spring latch 4 to the retracted position and allows the movement of the door.
  • the lock 1 also comprises a key-operated mechanism 6, which needs to be activated in order to allow the coupling of the lever 3 (through the slider 20) with the spring latch 4, and therefore permit the disengagement of the latter from the retention element as a consequence of the rotation of the lever 3 proper.
  • the lever 3 is still free to rotate, but without transmitting any movement to the spring latch 4.
  • the lock 1 is provided externally with a shell 7, which touches the slab 2a of the base 2 (and the door) with its perimetric band 7b.
  • the coupling of the shell 7 to the base 2 is obtained right along the flanks (not visible to a user/observer standing in front of the door), where the interlocking occurs between the band 7b (with its aperture 13) and the pillar 11 and where, on the opposite flank, the first means 8, which mutually tighten the lug 2b and the lip 7c, act, consolidating the coupling by interlocking.
  • the lock 1 does not present exposed screws or similar fixing elements, thus ensuring an attractive design defined by the shape chosen for the shell 7 (and the plate 7a in particular, which covers the slab 2a) and the lever 3 (the only other component that is left visible).
  • assembly 5 and the lever 3 are coupled directly or indirectly to the base 2, appreciably reducing the (functional) role of the shell 7 (to which only the key-operated mechanism 6 and the tab 10 pertain). This makes it possible to achieve a twofold objective.
  • the shape and the dimensions of the shell 7 can be chosen freely, solely as a function of the chosen aesthetics of the manufacturer (or of the commissioning company), thus ensuring the maximum of possibilities for the customization of the design of the lock 1 (determined by the design of the shell 7).
  • changes to the shape and dimensions of the shell 7 have a minimal impact on the functionality of the lock 1, and therefore they can be freely made, on condition obviously that they ensure that the slab 2a is covered with the plate 7a, which is necessary to protect and hide the internal components.
  • shells 7 can therefore be adopted which have a plate 7a that is flat or which is more or less rounded, and which has an outline corresponding to that of the underlying slab 2a or a different outline, according to the specific aesthetic requirements.
  • Such variations can be made during the initial installation, for example to meet the different requirements of a new customer, or even to replace a previous shell 7, while giving a new appearance to a lock 1 that is already installed and which has been operating for some time.
  • the lock 1 is found to be reliable, particularly compact, and mechanically strong.
  • the materials employed, as well as the dimensions, may be any according to requirements and to the state of the art.
