Definitions
- the invention relates to an alloy steel with excellent workability, resistance to scaling and acid resistance, and components made therefrom.
- Blanks for forging are usually obtained by decarburizing molten steel produced by a converter, etc., using, for example, a vacuum degassing method such as the RH method to reduce the carbon concentration to a particularly low carbon concentration. Thereafter, continuous pouring usually takes place.
- EP0509453A1 discloses a heat-resistant cast steel, a method for its manufacture and exhaust system parts made therefrom.
- 42CrMo4 steel or 43 CrMo4 or its sulfur-containing variant 42 CrMoS4 was often used as a low-alloy steel. All of these steels have a very similar composition and behavior.
- 42CrMo4 steel In the hardened and tempered state, 42CrMo4 steel has a tensile strength of 900 to approx. 1200 MPa, a yield point Re MPa of at least 650 MPa 41CrMo4 steel - like 43CrMo4 in the hardened and tempered state, has a tensile strength and yield point Re MPa in the same ranges.
- the alloy components of the steel used in the known alloy have the following effects, among others
- Carbon lowers the melting point and increases the hardness and tensile strength through the formation of Fe3C. In larger quantities it increased the brittleness and reduced the forging ability, welding work, elongation at break and notched impact strength. In particular moldability is lowered when it is added in a large amount. The addition must therefore be small here.
- Chromium lowers the critical cooling rate, increases wear resistance, heat resistance, and scaling resistance.
- the tensile strength is increased because chromium acts as a carbide former. From approx. 12% by weight it increases the corrosion resistance (stainless steel) and has a ferrite-stabilizing effect. Unfortunately, it reduces the impact work and the welding work, and lowers the thermal and electrical conductivity. The best results of hardening and full hardening are achieved with the addition of chromium. Chromium is traded on the market at relatively higher prices; for economic reasons it is desirable not to set the Cr content too high.
- Molybdenum also increases the hardenability and advantageously complements chromium.
- Mo improves the heat resistance and the tempering resistance, a property that is particularly important in tempering.
- the molybdenum reduces the critical cooling rate and forms stable carbides with carbon. In combination with chromium, it improves corrosion resistance.
- Sulfur increases the machinability, but reduces the ductility and thus the forging ability of the iron alloy.
- Manganese increases the depth hardenability of the alloy. Manganese is deoxidized. It binds sulfur as manganese sulphide and thereby reduces the unfavorable influence of iron sulphide. This is of particular importance for free cutting steel; the risk of red breakage is reduced. Manganese greatly reduces the critical cooling rate and thus increases hardenability. The yield point and strength are increased by adding manganese, and manganese also has a beneficial effect on forgeability and weldability and greatly increases the hardening depth. Manganese increases the coefficient of thermal expansion, while thermal and electrical conductivity decrease.
- the well-known quenched and tempered steel 41 CrS4 is similar, which is essentially used for the same purposes as 42CrMo4 IM, but has lower strength values: 41CrS4 steel has a composition of (Wt.%) Min Max C. 0.38 0.45 Mn 0.60 0.90 Si max 0.40 S. max 0.040 Cr 0.90 1.20
- the tempered steel 41CrS4 is a versatile material and is mainly used in automobile and vehicle construction. It is used for components whose strength requirements are not as high as for components made from the heat-treated steel 42CrMo4.
- 41CrS4 is hot formed at 1310 ° C - 850 ° C and should then be slowly cooled. 41CrS4 is difficult to weld and should therefore not be used in welded constructions. In the quenched and tempered condition at room temperature, the 41CrS4 steel has a yield point (MPa) of 800 - 560 and a tensile strength (MPa) of 1200 - 950 MPa.
- the well-known quenched and tempered steels 42CrMo4 / 42CrMoS4, 41Cr4 / 41CrS4 and 41CrMo4 / 41 CrMoS4, which have very similar properties, are widely used. With the properties described, the materials are suitable for high and maximum dynamic and static loads. Their application results from the required strength and toughness values, but the dimensioning of the components must always be taken into account. The mechanical workability of these steels, in particular in hot and cold forming processes, is excellent and they are therefore used extensively in vehicle construction, mechanical engineering, large engine construction, etc.
- the temperatures in the combustion chamber are likely to be up to 500 ° C and somewhat lower on the inside of the piston.
- the material 42CrMo4 in a hardened and tempered version is often chosen as the standard material for the upper piston part.
- the strength of these components is between 870 and 1,080 MPa.
- the heat resistance, resistance to alternating loads, resistance to temperature shock and resistance to oxidation of this heat treatable steel are just sufficient for the present conditions.
- an object of the present invention is to further improve the scaling resistance of low-alloy heat-treatable steels in the case of steel parts that can withstand high thermal loads, even in chemically aggressive surroundings.
- the object is surprisingly achieved by the alloyed steel with the features of claim 1 and components according to claim 4 produced therefrom.
- the steels according to the invention contain at least 92.00% by weight iron, preferably at least 96.00% by weight iron.
- impurities and unavoidable elements are each present in concentrations of less than 0.10% by weight, preferably less than 0.05% by weight.
- a typical application is in components exposed to acid attacks, such as all-burners and diesel engines, which are operated with uncleaned fuels (e.g. non-desulphurized diesel).
- uncleaned fuels e.g. non-desulphurized diesel
- a tensile strength of> 950 - 1250 [MPa]
- a yield point (Mpa) of> 700 to about 770
- an elongation at break> 10% a scaling resistance of approx. 600 ° C to approx. 650 ° C and more.
- Typical components of this type are machine components selected from the group consisting of pistons, also for internal combustion engines, crankshafts, connecting rods, steering parts, valve parts, conveyor belt parts, in particular for hot parts; but also power plant components; Fastening parts for heat-resistant areas, steam turbine parts, combustion chamber parts for gas or oil burners; Exhaust systems and parts therefor; Excavator buckets, dispersion pumps such as concrete pumps and scraper conveyors.
- the steel according to the invention can be used in areas where high abrasion resistance / hardness with good formability and resistance to oxidation, in particular, is desired. These are typical conditions as they occur in conveyor systems for mining and chemical products.
- the costs for the steel according to the invention are only insignificantly higher than those of 42CrMo4, but at the same time there is a considerable increase in the oxidation resistance.
- the yield point and the tensile strength increase by about 200 MPa in the steels according to the invention with Cr contents> 2% by weight compared to the known 42CrMo4, accompanied by a slight reduction in elongation at break.
- the machining does not change and can be carried out with the usual tools and procedures.
- titanium prevents intergranular corrosion due to the formation of TiC.
- the strong nitride former (titanium) serves, among other things, to protect boron by reacting with nitrogen. For example, when nitrogen is fixed with titanium, satisfactory hardenability occurs in the temperature range up to 1000 ° C when the steel contains about 5-20 ppm boron.
- Ti is used to reduce steel and fix C and N as TiC respectively TiN used. The Ti content must therefore be at least 0.02%. However, since the effect of adding Ti is saturated with Ti when the Ti content rises above 0.08%, the upper limit of the Ti content is defined as 0.08%.
- the titanium is a strong reducing agent and forms stable oxides, carbides, nitrides and sulfides.
- niobium acts as a strong carbide and nitride former and serves here in particular to protect boron from reacting with nitrogen. It can replace or complement titanium.
- Boron increases the yield point and strength of the steel, even when added in the smallest amounts. It also acts as a neutron absorber and makes the steel suitable for nuclear power plant and similar applications.
- the addition of boron in an amount up to 0.01% on austenitic steels also improves their high temperature resistance. Boron steels are high quality cold forming steels. The basic effect of boron in steel is evident in the improvement in hardenability, which is already effective at a very low concentration of 0.0010% boron. Even in the small amount up to 100 ppm, boron increases the hardenability more than other, more expensive elements that have to be used in much larger amounts
- boron steels An outstanding feature of boron steels is the improvement in hardenability by adding even tiny amounts of boron, between 3 and 15 ppm.
- the amount of boron is critical, because an excessive amount of boron (> 30 ppm) can lower the toughness and lead to embrittlement and hot brittleness.
- the influence of boron on hardenability also depends on the amount of carbon in the steel, with the effect of boron increasing in inverse proportion to the percentage of carbon present.
- the hardenability of steel is largely due to the behavior of oxygen, carbon and nitrogen in steel. Boron reacts with oxygen to form boron oxide (B 2 O 3) ; with carbon to iron boron cementite (Fe 3 (CB)) and iron boron carbide (Fe 23 (CB) 6) and with nitrogen to boron nitride (BN). Boron can be lost through oxygen.
- the hardenability of boron steel is also closely related to austenitic conditions and is usually reduced by heating above 1000 ° C. Boron steels must also be hardened at a lower temperature than other alloy steels with the same hardenability be tempered.
- the steels according to the invention are used for many applications, such as wear-resistant material and as high-strength steel. Examples of this are punching tools, spades, knives, saw blades, safety carriers in vehicles, etc.
- Boron steels are indicated if the base material meets the mechanical requirements (toughness, wear resistance, etc.), but the hardenability is not sufficient for the intended section size. Instead of requiring a higher alloyed and thus more expensive steel, a user can use appropriate amounts of boron, whereby a suitable hardenability is achieved.
- the steel according to the invention with the chromium content significantly increased compared to 42CrMo4 is also considerably more acid-resistant - even at higher temperatures. Therefore, it is particularly suitable e.g. for lining combustion chambers in which fuels containing sulfur (diesel, naphtha etc.) are burned or for containers of any kind in which acidic compounds occur (SO2 lines, etc.).
- Classic fields of application are also so-called all-rounders or engines that should be able to run on all fuels in special vehicles
- Samples of the shape 30x30x2 mm3 were made from each material and exposed to an oxygen atmosphere in the furnace at different temperatures for 2 hours. In order to compare the behavior of the materials, the weight of the samples was determined before and after the oxidative heat treatment.
- the weight gain indicates the oxidation: SAMPLE T (° C) / h Weight before Weight according to Increase (g) Increase (%) MCG 35 500 ° C / 2h 17.6936g 17.6941g 0.0005 0.002825881 MCG3 500 ° C / 2h 16.0558 16.0563 0.0005 0.003114139 MCG35 550 ° C / 2h 15.7848 15.7849 0.0001 0.000633521 MCG3 550 ° C / 2h 16.6726 16.6728 0.0002 0.001199573 MCG35 600 ° C / 2h 18.2617 18.2619 0.0002 0.001095188 MCG3 600 ° C / 2h 16.5440 16.5445 0.0005 0.003022244 MCG35 650 ° C / 2h 16.7342 16.7343 0.0001 0.000597579 MCG3 650 ° C / 2h 16.2336 16.2361 0.0025 0.015400158

- the invention thus also relates to machine components or parts with a tensile strength of more than 1000 [MPa] for alternating mechanical loads up to a temperature of at least 650 ° C., formed from the thermally tempered steel alloy.
- the invention also relates to engine and / or drive components of vehicles. But other machine components with changing mechanical and thermal stress are also increasingly subjected to higher loads in modern technology, up to the limits of the respective material resistance. This applies in particular to engines because the weight reductions achieved can also be used to save fuel and the like.
- the low-alloy heat-treatable steels according to the invention are now advantageously used for parts with significant, alternating mechanical loads in the railway, automobile and aviation sectors.
- the use of steel alloys with a composition corresponding to that of quenched and tempered steels of the aforementioned type has proven itself for the production of highly stressed machine components, with their fatigue properties and thermal resistance being sufficient for a mechanical alternating load in the limit value range of the materials used.
