Definitions
- the invention relates to a method for laser welding one or more workpieces made of press-hardenable steel, in particular manganese-boron steel, in the butt joint, according to the preamble of claim 1.
- Such a method in which workpieces of press-hardenable manganese-boron steel are used, which have a coating based on aluminum and are partially delayered by ablation of their coating in the edge region along the abutting edges to be welded prior to laser welding, is from WO 2013/014481 A1 known.
- Tailored blanks made of sheet steel are used in the automotive industry to meet high demands on crash safety with the lowest possible body weight.
- tailored blanks are used in the automotive industry to meet high demands on crash safety with the lowest possible body weight.
- individual blanks or strips of different material quality and / or sheet thickness are joined together in the butt joint by laser welding.
- different locations of the finished body component can be adapted to different loads.
- So thicker or higher-strength steel sheet can be used in places with high load and thinner sheets or sheets of relatively soft thermoforming grades at the other locations.
- Such customized sheet metal blanks eliminate the need for additional reinforcing parts on the bodywork. This saves material and allows to reduce the overall weight of the body.
- boron-alloyed steels in particular manganese-boron steels, have been developed which achieve high strengths during hot forming with rapid cooling, for example tensile strengths in the range from 1500 to 2000 MPa.
- manganese-boron steels typically have a ferritic-perlitic Structure and have strengths of about 600 MPa.
- press hardening ie by heating to austenitizing temperature and subsequent rapid cooling in the molding press, however, a martensitic structure can be adjusted so that the steels thus treated can reach tensile strengths in the range of 1500 to 2000 MPa.
- the body components produced from such custom-made steel plates have a perfect hardness profile up to a certain sheet thickness or a certain thickness change.
- a sheet thickness between 0.5 and 1.8 mm, or even with a thickness jump between 0.2 and 0.4 mm
- the problem occurs that the laser weld during hot forming (press hardening) is not sufficient not hardened.
- the area of the weld then results only partially a martensitic microstructure, so that it can come under load of the finished component to a failure in the weld.
- This problem is probably related to the fact that in particular with a thickness jump usually sufficient contact with the cooled forming tool or cooling tool can not be guaranteed and thereby the weld can not be completely converted into martensite.
- US 2008/0011720 A1 describes a hybrid laser-arc welding method in which blanks of manganese-boron steel having an aluminum-containing surface layer are butt-joined together with the laser beam combined with at least one electric arc to reflow the metal at the butt joint and to weld the boards together.
- the electric arc is emitted by means of a tungsten welding electrode or forms when using a MIG welding torch at the top of an additional wire.
- the filler wire may contain elements (eg, Mn, Ni, and Cu) which induce the transformation of the steel into an austenitic structure and promote maintenance of austenitic transformation in the molten bath.
- the present invention has for its object to provide a laser welding process, with the workpieces of press-hardenable steel, in particular manganese-boron steel, which have a thickness between 0.5 and 1.8 mm and / or where at the butt joint a thickness jump between 0 , 2 and 0.4 mm, can be added to tailor-made workpieces, in particular custom-made blanks, in the butt joint, the weld seam of which can be reliably hardened into a martensitic structure during hot forming (press hardening).
- the process should be characterized by a high productivity and a relatively low energy consumption.
- the workpieces or tailor-made boards produced according to the invention offer a larger process window with regard to the hot forming (press hardening), in which a sufficient hardening of the component, in particular in its weld is achieved.
- the inventive method can be used not only when joining several steel blanks of different material quality and / or sheet thickness in the butt joint, but also, for example, the laser welding of a single plate or band-shaped steel sheet, in the latter case, the edges to be welded together of the workpiece by forming, for example by folding or roll forming, are moved towards each other, so that they are finally arranged facing each other in the butt joint.
- the inventive method can be applied using such coated steel blanks or steel strips, wherein according to an advantageous variant of the inventive method, the coating on aluminum or aluminum-silicon base in the edge region along the abutting edges to be welded together before laser welding, so that the used workpiece or the workpieces used are deemedt harshet.
- This can be done by means of at least one energy beam, preferably a laser beam.
- a mechanical or high-frequency (RF) stripping is also conceivable. In this way, a deterioration of the weld by otherwise inadvertently introduced coating material can be reliably prevented, which during hot forming (press hardening) can or should lead to dips in the hardness profile.
- Uncoated steel blanks or steel strips can also be welded together by the method according to the invention.
- the workpiece or the workpieces are selected so that their steel following Composition: 0.16 to 0.50 wt .-% C, max. 0.40 wt.% Si, 0.50 to 2.00 wt.% Mn, max. 0.025% by weight P, max. 0.010% by weight of S, Max. 0.60 wt.% Cr, max. 0.50 wt.% Mo, max. 0.050 wt.% Ti, 0.0008 to 0.0070 wt.% B, and min. 0.010 wt.% Al, remainder Fe and unavoidable impurities.
- the components produced from such a steel have a relatively high tensile strength after press hardening.
- Platinum-shaped or band-shaped workpieces made of press-hardenable steel are particularly preferably used in the process according to the invention, which have a tensile strength in the range from 1500 to 2000 MPa after press-hardening.
- a further advantageous embodiment of the method according to the invention provides that the additional wire is supplied to the molten bath in a heated state. This makes it possible to achieve a higher process speed or a higher productivity. Because in this embodiment, not so much energy must be expended with the laser beam to melt the filler wire.
- the filler wire is heated to a temperature of at least 50 ° C at least in a length section before being fed into the molten bath.
- a further preferred embodiment of the method according to the invention provides that the molten bath is subjected to inert gas (inert gas) during laser welding.
- inert gas inert gas
- Pure argon, helium, nitrogen or their mixture or a mixture of argon, helium, nitrogen and / or carbon dioxide and / or oxygen is particularly preferably used as protective gas.
- a device is shown schematically with which a laser welding method according to the invention can be performed.
- the device comprises a base (not shown) on which two bands or blanks 1, 2 of steel of different material quality butt against each other along the joint 3.
- one workpiece 1 or 2 has a relatively soft deep-drawing quality, while the other workpiece 2 or 1 consists of a high-strength steel sheet.
- At least one of the workpieces 1, 2 is made of press-hardenable steel, for example of manganese-boron steel.
- the workpieces 1, 2 are substantially the same thickness. Its thickness is between 0.5 to 1.8 mm, for example 1.6 mm.
- a section of a laser welding head 4 is sketched, which is provided with an optical system (not shown) for supplying a laser beam and a focusing lens 5 for the laser beam 6. Furthermore, a line 7 for supplying protective gas is arranged on the laser welding head 4. The mouth of the protective gas line 7 is directed substantially onto the focal region of the laser beam 6 or the molten bath 8 generated by the laser beam 6.
- the protective gas used is preferably pure argon or, for example, a mixture of argon, helium and / or carbon dioxide.
- the laser welding head 4 is associated with a wire feed device 9, by means of which the melt bath 8, a special additional material in the form of a wire 10 is supplied, which is also melted by the laser beam 6.

Description

- In
