- the principle of measurement is as follows: a semi-porous polydimethylsiloxane membrane (PDMS) is used as a barrier between the pressure at the chamber outlet (atmospheric pressure) and the vacuum of the mass spectrometer.
- the difference in pressure on both sides of the membrane and the semi-porous nature of the membrane make volatile organic compounds migrate more rapidly through the membrane than the other molecules contained in the injected air (oxygen, nitrogen, argon, carbon dioxide and water). This results in an enrichment in volatile organic compounds hence a greater sensitivity of the detection by the mass spectrometer.
