  1. Applicator for applying a product to the nails or to the skin, comprising:
    - a gripping portion (10),
    - a stem (4) extending from the gripping portion (10) along a longitudinal axis X-X, the stem (4) having, along the longitudinal axis X-X, a succession of non-circular cross sections that are offset angularly from one another about said axis X-X so as to form a helical pattern allowing the product to be applied to flow less rapidly, and
    - an applicator member formed by a brush (5), the applicator member being a tuft of bristles fastened in a housing at the free end of the stem,
    the applicator being characterized in that the sections of the succession of non-circular cross sections include a protuberance so as to form a helical rib (28) around the stem (4), the rib (28) extending from the free end of the stem (4) having a gradient of between 10° and 70° with respect to an axis perpendicular to the axis X-X, or in that the stem (4) has a succession of flattened cross sections, said stem (4) having a portion (38) twisted about the longitudinal axis X-X.
  2. Applicator according to the preceding claim, characterized in that all the sections of the succession of non-circular cross sections are identical.
  3. Applicator according to either of the preceding claims, characterized in that the length of the portion of bristles that extends out of the housing is between 5 and 20 mm.
  4. Applicator according to either of Claims 1 and 2, characterized in that the applicator member is an end piece made of thermoplastic material.
  5. Applicator according to one of the preceding claims, characterized in that the succession of non-circular cross sections over more than half the height of the stem.
  6. Applicator according to one of the preceding claims, characterized in that the succession of non-circular cross sections extends as far as the free end of the stem.
  7. Applicator according to one of the preceding claims, characterized in that the largest dimension of the opening of the housing, measured perpendicularly to the axis X-X, is less than or equal to 3 mm.
  8. Applicator according to one of the preceding claims, characterized in that the largest transverse dimension of one section of the stem is less than or equal to 5 mm.
  9. Applicator according to one of the preceding claims, characterized in that the stem is made in one piece with the gripping member by moulding thermoplastic material.
  10. Device for packaging and applying a cosmetic product, comprising:
    - a container containing the product to be applied, and
    - an applicator as defined in one of the preceding claims.
