Claims (18)

  1. An applicator for applying a substance to nails, the applicator comprising a rod (4), and bristles (5) fixed in a housing (15) of an end portion (14) of the rod, the housing (15) having an opening of oblong cross-section with a long axis (X), in the end portion (14), the rod (4) presenting a cross-section having an outer contour (16) that does not present any concavity, with the exception of a groove (18), or two grooves (18) situated opposite each other, said groove(s) extending along at least a portion of the rod (4), and being situated substantially mid-way along the long axis (X) of the housing (15) when the rod is observed in cross-section, the applicator being characterized by the fact that, the rod (4) has a wall of varying thickness (e) around the housing (15).
  2. An applicator according to claim 1, characterized by the fact that the rod includes two grooves (18) situated opposite each other.
  3. An applicator according to claim 2, characterized by the fact that the grooves are symmetrical about a midplane parallel to the long axis (X). '
  4. An applicator according to claim 2, characterized by the fact that the grooves are of different shapes.
  5. An applicator according to any preceding claim, characterized by the fact that the opening of the housing (15) presents a cross-section that is substantially rectangular.

  8. An applicator according to any preceding claim, characterized by the fact that the end wall of the housing includes a recess (15a) in which the bristles are fixed, and which opens out into a portion (15b) of the housing which flares out towards the opening of said housing.
  9. An applicator according to any preceding claim, characterized by the fact that the length of the portion of the bristles which projects from the housing (15) lies in the range 5 mm to 20 mm.
  10. An applicator according to any preceding claim, characterized by the fact that the free ends of the bristles substantially describe an arc of a circle (C) having a radius of curvature lying in the range 2 mm to 15 mm, and in particular in the range 4 mm to 10 mm.
  11. An applicator according to any preceding claim, characterized by the fact that the width of the opening of the housing, measured perpendicularly to the long axis (X), is not greater than 2 mm.
  12. An applicator according to any preceding claim, characterized by the fact that, at its widest point, the portion of the rod that is immersed in the substance contained in the receptacle when the applicator is in place on said receptacle is not greater than 5 mm.
  13. An applicator according to any preceding claim, characterized by the fact that the rod presents wall thickness (e1) around the housing that is smaller at a longitudinal end of the housing (15) than the wall thickness (e2) measured mid-way along the housing.
  14. An applicator according to any preceding claim, characterized by the fact that the thickness of the wall extending around the housing passes through a minimum in the portions that are adjacent to the longitudinal ends of the long axis (X) of the housing.
  15. An applicator according to any preceding claim, characterized by the fact that the rod is arranged so as to be fixed to a closure cap (10) of a receptacle.
  16. An applicator according to any one of claims 1 to 14, characterized by the fact that the rod is made in a single integral piece with a closure cap of the receptacle, by molding plastics material.
  17. An applicator according to any preceding claim, characterized by the fact that the bristles extend outside the housing over a width (ℓ2), measured parallel to the long axis (X), that is greater than the width (ℓ1) of the rod at the housing (15).
  18. A device (1) for applying a substance to nails, the device being characterized by the fact that it comprises both a receptacle containing the substance to be applied, and an applicator as defined in any preceding claim.
