Definitions
- the present invention relates to a coin blank having a core of a ferrous material, preferably of steel, with a cover layer of copper and / or of a copper alloy.
- Coin blanks or coin blanks and coins embossed therefrom whose core consists of steel and which are coated on the surface with a cover layer of a non-ferrous metal, are known and widely used.
- the galvanic coating of the steel blanks has generally prevailed for manufacturing and economic reasons.
- the coating of coin blanks or Münzronden steel with copper or copper alloy serves both the corrosion protection of the highly corrosion-prone steel core and the coloring of the nominal, for example, by galvanic cover layers of copper or a copper alloy, such as brass.
- Well-known examples are the currently in circulation coins of 1-, 2- and 5-Eurocents, which have a core made of steel, which is electroplated copper.
- the copper layer usually has a thickness of 20 ⁇ m to more than 30 ⁇ m.
- DE 41 20 291 also a blank for a coin which comprises a two- or multi-layer galvanic coating of the steel core with nickel, copper and nickel as the outer layer, the coating thicknesses being based on the weight of the blank 1% Ni, 4-7% Cu and 1-1, 5% Ni should be. This corresponds to a layer thickness of greater than 10 microns of each layer.
- circulating coins are those having a steel core with a copper-colored electroplated topcoat.
- both the special color of the coin is achieved as the corrosion protection of the steel core sought.
- copper layer has the disadvantage that in constant use of the coin in circulation a dull patina forms, which relatively quickly lost the original luster of the copper surface of the coin. It also changes the color seriously from the original copper red to an unsightly reddish brown.
- galvanic cover layers which relate to a copper alloy, such as CuZn or CuSn. These surfaces lose their luster and their original golden color.
- Well-known coins which consist of a steel core and are galvanically nickel-plated ( DE 29 32 229 . DE 41 20 291 Although they are more resistant to corrosion and keep their typical nickel gloss in use as a circulation coin, but they are limited to the silver color of the nickel.
- the object of the invention is to provide a coin blank with a core of an iron material, in particular of steel, which is provided with a cover layer of copper or of a copper alloy, said cover layer sufficiently long in the continuous use of the coin embossed therefrom the original color shade of the copper or the copper alloy and its gloss retains and thus has a high tarnish resistance.
- the invention further relates to an article having a surface layer of copper or a copper alloy and a nickel doping in the surface layer.
- a coin blank comprising a steel core and provided with a cover layer of copper or a copper alloy is surface-doped with a wafer-thin nickel layer.
- the cover layer can be applied galvanically.
- the doping with nickel can be carried out by electrochemical or physical application of a nickel layer. It has been found that both the intense color of the copper layer is retained by the nickel doping and the gloss of a circulating coin, which was coined from the coin blank according to the invention, is not lost in continuous use.
- the nickel-doped coin blotter according to the present invention enables the embossing of circulating coins having a steel core which is electroplated with copper and / or a copper alloy in a new quality of coins. These coins ensure a lasting gloss and color consistency of the respective cover layer made of copper, brass (CuZn) or bronze (CuSn) or color-analog copper alloys, such as aluminum bronze (CuAl).
- the solution according to the invention also does not exclude blanks for commemorative embossing, medals and similar special cases of a galvanic coating.

Description
- 2' - galvanische Zwischenschicht Kupfer
- 2" - galvanische Deckschicht Kupfer-Zink-Legierung (Messing)
- 3 - Nickeldotierung in der Kupfer-Zink-Deckschicht
-
