Im Unterschied zum Bandschleifen läuft das Finishband nicht als Endlosband kontinuierlich um, sondern wird von einer Bandrolle abgezogen und mittels einer Haspel aufgewickelt. Die Rotation des Werkstückes ist üblicherweise der Bewegungsrichtung des Finishbandes entgegengesetzt. Die entgegengesetzte Rotation vergrößert die in der Bearbeitungsstelle auf das Finishband wirkenden Zugspannung und stellt sicher, dass das Finishband fest an der Druckrolle anliegt. Bei der Finishbearbeitung von Nockenflächen und ähnlichen Werkstücken, die bei einer Drehbewegung eine auflaufende und wieder ablaufende Flanke aufweisen, wird die Drehrichtung des Werkstückes während der Finishbearbeitung gewechselt. wobei ein um die Druckrolle (7) geführter Bandabschnitt des Finishbandes (4) auf das Werkstück wirkt und mit der Druckrolle (7) oszillierende Bewegungen quer zur Bahnrichtung des Finishbandes (4) ausführt,
dadurch gekennzeichnet, dass auf die Druckrolle (7) eine Bremskraft ausgeübt wird, um einen gleichmäßigen Bandlauf des Finishbandes (4) zu gewährleisten, wenn die Drehrichtung des rotierenden Werkstücks während der Finishbearbeitung wechselt.
