Description

The invention relates to an insert intended to be inserted into an illustrated magazine or more generally to a publication comprising a plurality of leaflets. The invention also relates to a publication containing this insert.

The purpose of such an insert is to allow the publication of a photo, text or other on a double page in the best possible conditions. Currently, when a magazine is opened and laid flat on a surface, all the sheets form a rounded at the edge of binding which is usually called the bit. Indeed, at the jaw, the sheets are oriented perpendicular to the plane on which the main parts of the sheets are based. This rounding adds a third dimension to the illustration that is printed on the pages.

It is therefore very difficult to design a photo, or an advertisement that extends continuously over two pages vis-à-vis. Indeed the middle part of the picture is distorted at the sight of the reader by the rounded, moreover a band in the middle of the picture disappears in the bit. We observe a deformation of the middle part of the photo, as well as a discontinuity in this middle part.

One solution is to print on each page a portion of photo with an additional band that is also visible on the portion of the photo of the other page. Thus the continuity of the photo is restored after the imprisonment of the two additional bands in the jaw. This, however, does not solve the problem of the third dimension created by the rounding of the leaflets.

Another problem to pay attention to is the correspondence of the two portions of photo in the direction of the height of the pages. It happens that the two portions are shifted.

Thus, in general, the rendering of a photo on a double page of magazine is mediocre.

Another mode of presentation consists in providing a double beach which opens laterally towards the outside. By adding flaps, it is possible to present a photo or advertisement that spans two, three or four pages in width or more. Such a presentation of an insert is known for example under the usual name "French door" or "Gatefold" according to the number and dimensions of the various components, and it is described in particular in the patents US 2005/0276678 , US2316786 or US3866900 .

In this case, the opening of the insert requires the reader of the magazine a particular manipulation that greatly reduces the effect of surprise obtained when he discovers the inside of the insert by turning the pages of the magazine in a natural way.

A first object of the invention is to provide a magazine insert which is improved in that it allows the presentation of a reproduction, a photo or other on a double page without significant distortion of the photo or reproduction in the connecting zone between the two pages, and in that the deployment of the two pages of the insert occurs by a natural movement similar to the movement to turn the pages of the magazine.

Another object of the invention is to propose an insert which offers new possibilities for producing visual presentation effects.

Thus, according to the invention, the insert comprises a sheet formed by four flaps, two outer flaps and two inner flaps, the two outer flaps having the same dimensions in height and in width, the two inner flaps having the same height dimensions. and in width, each outer flap being connected to an inner flap by a creasing, and the two inner flaps being interconnected by a creasing, each creasing extending in the direction of the height of the flaps, the two outer flaps having a jaw strip along the edge opposite the crease with the inner flap, and the width dimension of an inner flap being smaller than the width dimension of an outer flap.

The publication according to the invention comprises a plurality of sheets assembled together at a broaching jaw, it is characterized in that it comprises an insert as previously described.

According to another characteristic, the jaw band of the outer flaps of the insert is trapped in the stitching jaw.

Magazine 1 which is schematically represented in the figure 1 comprises in known manner a cover 2 which is folded over a plurality of sheets 3 stacked on each other. The sheets 3 and the cover 2 are stitched at the back 4 of the magazine by any appropriate means and for example by a collage which assembles between them the edges of the sheets. A common technique of broaching leaflets and cover is known as the "glued square back". The sheets are assembled in the normal order of reading, they are cut with a cutter to get a flat back. The book thus formed is placed on the back and then milled to obtain notches that will allow the glue to penetrate, ensuring perfect adhesion of each sheet on the back of the cover. The cover is then added. Optionally is then cut on all three sides not glued to have very regular edges.

Other assembly techniques are also suitable. For example the sheets are assembled according to notebooks that are glued together and with the cover.

Each of the leaflets presents along the back a band that supports the assembly glue. The set of these strips glued together forms what we usually denominates the bit. Thus, the magazine 1 has a jaw 5 along the back 4. For a current magazine, the width of the jaw is between 3 and 6 millimeters, and often it is equal to 5 millimeters.

Classically the magazine leaflets are rectangular, and it should be said that they have a height and a width, the backs of the leaflets being oriented in the direction of the height, and the width being oriented perpendicular to this direction.

Usually the leaflets of a magazine are made of a paper whose grammage is between 65 and 110 g / m ² , preferably between 65 and 80 g / m ² . As for the cover, it is made of a larger paper weight.

Preferably, the invention applies to a pinning sheets or notebooks made by gluing. But other stitching techniques may also be suitable.

The figure 2 shows magazine 1 in open position resting on a fictional planar support. This figure highlights the roundings that the sheets 6 and 7 present in the zones 6a and 7a. Rounding may vary depending on where the magazine is open. Also they may vary depending on how the reader would hold the magazine in his hand. As a rule, the roundings are similar on both sides of the back when the magazine is open towards the middle of its thickness, and the more the number of leaflets on one side increases, the more the roundness on the other side is pronounced, in effect the back tends to tilt naturally to the side where the number of leaflets is the most important. In any case the magazine has at least one rounding that distorts the illustration of the page.

The figure 3 shows an insert 8 in developed.

The insert 8 comprises a sheet consisting of four flexible flaps 9, 10, 11 and 12 connected in pairs by creases 13, 14, 15 which form hinges. The creases are oriented in the direction of the height of the shutters so that the flaps extend next to each other. Preferably, the four flaps and their creasing are made in one piece.

The height of the shutters is equal to or less than the height of a leaflet. Preferably it is slightly lower, ie it is less than a few millimeters.

The width of the shutters is determined as follows. The outer flaps 9 and 12 have the same width which is equal to or less than the width of the leaflets of the magazine. This is the useful width ie the width of the visible part of the page. Preferably the width is slightly less than this useful width. The width of the inner shutters 10 and 11 is smaller than the width of the outer shutters. To obtain the desired effect, this width is less than 1 to 4 centimeters. Good results have been obtained with exterior shutters having a width of 23 centimeters and interior shutters of 21 centimeters. Also good results were obtained with outer shutters of 22 centimeters and inner shutters of 21 centimeters, or with outer shutters of 26 centimeters and inner shutters of 22.5 centimeters. According to the illustrated embodiment, the outer flaps are each extended by a strip 17, 18 whose width is equal to or less than the width of the jaw strips of the magazine, ie less than or equal to 5 millimeters for a jaw 5 millimeters wide. Each outer flap 9, 12 is connected to a jaw strip 17, 18 by a crease 20, 21 which extends over the height of the outer flaps. The creases 20 and 21 are preferred, but they are not essential, there could be continuity between the flap and the bit strip associated with it.

The insert is made of a flexible material, which however has a greater stiffness than that of the leaflets of the magazine. For example, the flaps are made of a paper whose weight is between 180 and 250 g / m ² , preferably 200 to 225 g / m ² for a paper of sheet having a basis weight of 65 to 80 g / m ² . A too low paper weight is not desirable because the flaps would be too soft, in particular the outer flaps would not have sufficient stiffness to tension the interior flaps and too heavy paper weight is not desirable either because the flaps would in this case excessive stiffness that would hinder the deployment of the insert. Other by the insert would be too thick in the magazine. Other materials are suitable also for example a plastic sheet material, or a multilayer material.

The figure 4 shows the insert 8 mounted and folded, which forms a slip ready to be inserted in a magazine. For the sake of clarity, the thickness dimensions of the insert have been exaggerated in this figure.

The assembly consists of folding the flaps on each other around the creases, so that they stack and stick on one another the two strips of jaws 17 and 18. It is preferred to assemble the strips bit at this stage, ie before inserting the insert between the sheets of the magazine to prevent the shutters from sliding over each other during the assembly of the magazine which would tend to twist the insert. Other solutions than collage exist. For example, it is possible to provide mechanical fastening of the two jaw strips by complementary shapes that fit into each other, for example by hook-shaped cuts, or strips of a strip that penetrate into slots. from the other band.

In this figure, it clearly appears that due to the difference in width between the outer and inner flaps, the creasing 14 between the two inner flaps is completely clear with respect to the jaw strips 17, 18. There is no interference between creasing 14 and the bit strips.

The figure 5 represents the deployed insert 8 and the figure 6 shows the insert 8 deployed between the leaflets of the magazine 1 open.

The assembly of the insert to the magazine is made at the time of assembly of the magazine. The insert is placed between two sheets so that the jaw strips 17 and 18 are engaged between the jaw strips of the two sheets in question. In the direction of the height the insert is positioned so that none of its free edges protrude from the edges of the magazine. The insert is then retained in the jaw by the broaching of the sheets. Note that the creasing 14 remains completely free after the broaching.

The insert can be assembled towards the middle of the magazine so that the rounded sheets are balanced, but this is not limiting and the insert can actually be placed at any location.

The deployment of the insert is done by a natural movement, similar to the movement to turn the pages of the magazine. When the insert is opened, the outer flaps have a tendency to bend, following the roundness of the sheets on which they rest. The difference in width with the interior shutters means that these interior shutters are extended and are almost in line with one another as the figures 5 and 6 . Two factors favor the extension of the interior shutters, the weight of the outer shutters which imposes on the shutters to follow a rounding close to that of the sheets on which they rest, and the difference in width between outer and inner shutters. The greater the difference, the stronger the extension. However a too important difference would lead to a curl of the outer shutters which is not aesthetically desirable.

It is believed that a difference in width of between 5 and 15% of the width of the outer flap makes it possible to obtain good results, preferably between 5 and 10%. It has been realized for a current magazine an insert whose width of an outer flap is between 19 and 26 centimeters and the difference in width between an inner flap and an outer flap is between 1 and 4 centimeters.

In this way, the insert has four directly visible faces that can be used as a communication medium. In particular the two inner shutters offer a surface on a double page. A photograph or an illustration that is printed on this double page appears to the eyes of a reader without significant deformation in the creasing that connects the two inner shutters. The third dimension effect is absorbed by the bending of the two outer flaps. And since the photo can be printed directly on the entire insert, there is no risk of misalignment between the two portions of photos that normally exists.

The closure of the insert is done by turning the shutters, by a natural gesture similar to the gesture to turn a leaflet. Due to the memory effect of the creasing 14 and the weight of the outer flaps 10 and 11, these flaps fold naturally between the outer flaps 9 and 12 in the configuration which is shown in FIG. figure 4 .

The insert 8 also provides a communication medium on the faces of the shutters that are not visible directly. These faces, in particular the faces of the outer flaps form a second plane, they can be printed with a background of a color that contrasts with the first plane of the inner flaps to bring out. Or you can print a text or a logo or any other illustration.

Another variant is to make one or more cuts in one or more inner and / or outer shutters. These cuts will be revealed thanks to the background formed by the face of another shutter. They may for example have the shape of a logo.

Other variants are possible which make it possible to obtain attractive visual effects.

The invention which has just been described is not limiting and variants are possible.

In particular the assembly of the free edges of the flaps to form the insert can be achieved elsewhere than between the two outer flaps and in particular at a crease between an outer flap and an inner flap, or between two inner flaps. In this case, a flap is extended by a fold which is assembled to the adjacent flap. In this case the bit strips are joined by a creasing. The dimensions of the insert may be different from those of the leaflets of the magazine.

Finally the invention is not limited to a magazine, it applies to any kind of publication including leaflets.

Claims (10)

1. A publication insert comprising a sheet that comprises two outer panels (9, 12) and two inner panels (10, 11), the two outer panels having the same height and width, and the two inner panels having the same height and width, each outer panel (9, 12) being connected to an inner panel (10, 11) via a score line (13, 15), and the two inner panels (10, 11) being connected together via a score line (14),
   characterized in that :

   - the sheet is made up of the four panels (9, 10, 11, 12),

   - each of the two outer panels is extended by a joint strip (17, 18) along its edge remote from the score line connection with the inner panel, and

   - the width of an inner panel is smaller than the width of an outer panel.
