Description
BOOK WHICH TURNS INTO A DISPLAYABLE DOCUMENT
This invention relates to a book binding which can be pulled apart so that information presented in a book format can turn into a display format.
Conventional books present information in a very easy to handle form, but one which it is hard to use for any form of display. Friezes are good for displaying information, but impossible to use in the way that a book is.
There are circumstances when it would be advantageous to be able to utilise the advantages of both formats without the disadvantages, for example a guide book to a museum or historical building which is then to be a souvenir of the visit. This invention makes this possible.
According to the present invention there is provided for the user a book which turns into a displayable document. The sheets which will go to make up the publication are folded in the 'concertina' manner. Glue is then applied down one of the two folded edges to make a spine. This allows the sheets to be viewed and used in the form of a book. At any time, the user can remove the binding by pulling at the spine; the binding comes away and the sheets unfold to present the whole document to view.
A specific embodiment of the invention will now be described by way of example with reference to the accompanying drawing in which:
Figure 1 shows the document after it has been printed but before it has been folded;
Figure 2 shows the 'concertina' folding;
Figure 3 shows glue applied to the spine edge only to form a 'book' binding
Figure 4 shows the document in use in its book' format; and
Figure 5 shows the binding removed to form a frieze that displays the entire content of the document at one time.
Figure 6 shows one way in which a cover can be applied to the bound book.
Figure 7 shows an alternative way in which the cover may be applied.
Figure 8 shows an alternative way in which a double, 'fold out' cover may be applied.
Figure 9 shows how the cover may include transferable stickers that may be appliedvto the inside of the book I display.
Referring to the drawing the document 1 is folded to make a series of 'valley folds' 2 and 'peak folds' 3. The valley folds are then collected together to form a 'spine' 4. Glue 5 is then applied to the spine in such a way that the spine binding is held together, but not extremely tightly. For the purposes of illustration the concertina fold is shown loosely, but in practice the folds would be gathered as closely as possible. The document can then be used as a book, with information (presented diagramatically for the purpose of this explanation as al- a2, bl-b2, cl-c2) in the way that conventional book pages are. At any time, the user can decide to transform the book into a display format. This is done by pulling the pages away from one another at the spine 7. The pages are released and may now all be seen together with al-....c2 all visible simultaneously. The number of pages presented this way and the size of each page can be altered depending on the content. A cover 8 can be applied to the bound document if desired as shown in figure 6. This presents an alternative method of releasing the spine glue, by pulling away the cover from the spine. An alternative method of attaching the cover is shown in figure 7 wherein 'Rl' indicates the position ofthe rear inside cover. A further feature is shown in figure 8 wherein the cover is doubled and folded in on itself, opening out to show further information, with the front and rear inside 'double covers' shown as 'Fla' and 'Rla'. Figure 9 shows how the cover may include die-cut stickers which can be applied to the inside of the document.
Claims (4)
1. A book which turns into a displayable document.
2. A book which turns into a displayable document as claimed in Claim 1 wherein the sheets which will go to
make up the publication are folded in the 'concertina' manner. Glue is then applied down one of the two
folded edges to make a spine. This allows the sheets to be viewed and used in the form of a book. At any
time, the user can remove the binding by pulling at the spine; the binding comes away and the sheets
unfold to present the whole document to view.
3. A book which turns into a displayable document as claimed in Claim 1 wherein the form of book binding
makes it possible to use the document both in a book format and in a display format by applying glue to
the spine formed when a concertina fold is gathered together.
4. A book which turns into a displayable document as claimed in Claim 3 wherein a cover is applied to the
book, which may include transferable stickers for application in the book 3. A book which turns into a displayable document substantially as described herein with reference to Figures
1 - 9 of the accompanying drawing.
