Definitions
- the invention relates to an oxygen-consuming electrode for the reduction of oxygen in alkaline medium with a novel multi-layer catalyst coating and an electrolyzer.
- the invention further relates to a production method for the oxygen-consuming electrode and its use in the chloralkali electrolysis or in fuel cells.
- the invention is based on known per se oxygen-consuming electrodes, which are formed as flat gas diffusion electrodes and usually comprise an electrically conductive carrier and a gas diffusion layer with a catalytically active component.
- the oxygen-consuming electrode - also referred to below as SVE for short - has to meet a number of requirements in order to be usable in industrial electrolyzers.
- the catalyst and all other materials used must be chemically stable to caustic soda of about 32% by weight and to pure oxygen at a temperature of typically 80-90 ° C.
- a high degree of mechanical stability is required because the electrodes are installed and operated in electrolyzers of a size of usually more than 2 m 2 surface (technical size). Further properties are: a high electrical conductivity, a small layer thickness, a high internal surface and a high electrochemical activity of the electrocatalyst, as well as their tightness, so that gas and liquid space remain separated from each other.
- the long-term stability and low production costs are further special requirements for a technically usable oxygen-consuming electrode.
- the invention relates to an oxygen-consuming electrode which has a multilayer structure and which has a difference between the gas and the electrolyte side with respect to the catalyst or PTFE concentration and can be produced by the wet process.
- Oxygenating cathodes according to the prior art are used in different arrangements in electrochemical processes, for example in the generation of electricity in fuel cells or in the electrolytic production of chlorine from aqueous solutions of Sodium chloride.
- a more detailed description of chlor-alkali electrolysis with oxygen-consuming cathodes can be found in Journal of Applied Electrochemistry, Vol. 38 (9) pages 1177-1194 (2008 ).
- Examples of electrolysis cells with oxygen-consuming cathodes are the publications EP 1033419B1 . DE 19622744C1 and WO 2008006909A2 refer to.
- An oxygen-consuming cathode typically consists of a support member, for example a porous metal plate or metal wire mesh, and an electrochemically active coating.
- the electrochemically active coating is porous and consists of hydrophilic and hydrophobic components.
- the hydrophobic components make it difficult to penetrate electrolytes and thus keep the corresponding pores free for the transport of the oxygen to the catalytically active centers.
- the hydrophilic components allow the penetration of the electrolyte to the catalytically active centers and the removal of the hydroxide ions.
- a hydrophobic component for example, polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) is used. Hydrophobic surfaces usually have a contact angle of more than 140 ° when wetted with pure water.
- a powder mixture of catalyst and polymeric component (such as PTFE) is prepared (eg according to the DE 2941774 ) are ground into particles, which are then distributed to an electrically conductive support element and pressed at room temperature.
- PTFE polymeric component
- Such a method is for example in EP 1728896A2 described.
- silver oxide / silver, as a binder polytertafluoroethylene (PTFE), and as a support, a network of nickel wires is called.
- a paste or a suspension consisting of catalyst and polymeric component in a dispersion medium preferably water is used.
- surface-active substances can additionally be added in order to increase the stability of the suspension or paste.
- a thickener may be added to the suspension.
- the paste is then applied by screen printing or calendering on a power distributor, while the less viscous suspension is usually sprayed on.
- the paste or suspension is gently dried after the removal of excess dispersant and pressed at temperatures in the range of the melting point of the polymer ( Journal of Applied Electrochemistry, Vol. 38 (9) pp. 1177-1194 (2008 )).
- the Oxygen-depleted cathodes may consist of a monolayer which is applied to a support.
- the carrier can take over several tasks, on the one hand the provision of the mechanical stability of the finished SVK and / or the assumption of the current distribution within the catalytically active layer.
- the known single-layer electrodes are sensitive to liquid and gas breakthrough. This is especially important in technical electrolysers. In this case, neither gas may enter the electrolyte space from the gas space nor electrolyte from the electrolyte space into the gas space.
- the oxygen-consuming cathode In industrial electrolysers, the oxygen-consuming cathode must withstand the hydrostatic pressure prevailing at the bottom of the technical electrolysis cell, for example 170 mbar. Since a gas diffusion electrode has a pore system, always a small amount of liquid passes into the gas space and gas enters the liquid space. The amount depends on the cell design of the electrolyser. The SVK should be tight at a pressure difference between the gas and liquid space of 10-60 mbar.
- liquid-tight is meant that an amount of liquid of not more than 10 g / (h * cm 2 ) passes through the SVK (where g is the mass of liquid, h is one hour and cm 2 is the geometric electrode surface).
- Multilayer oxygen-consuming cathodes can basically be produced by the dry or wet pasting method. According to the EP 1728896 Multi-layered oxygen-consuming cathodes are produced by the dry process. This powder layers are produced in which the PTFE content varies from 3 to 15 wt .-%. No statement is made about the arrangement of the layers with different PTFE content. Disadvantage of the described method is that the layers can not be formed arbitrarily thin. The consequence of this is that a correspondingly constructed multi-layer oxygen-consuming cathode would be relatively thick, which leads to an increased cell voltage in the electrolysis and causes high production costs due to the increased use of material.
- the US 46024261 also discloses a multilayer oxygen-consuming cathode made by the dry process.
- the best disclosed two-layer electrode has a thickness of at least 0.89 mm.
- Apparent PTFE contents range from at least 10 wt% up to 50 wt%. Such high PTFE contents can lead to the active catalyst particles not forming an electrically conductive network in the electrode and therefore not the entire portion of the catalyst material being available for the electrochemical reaction. This reduces the efficiency of the electrolysis cell and thus increases the cell voltage.
- the US 5584976 discloses a multi-layer oxygen-consuming cathode made by applying two-sided layers to a silver substrate.
- the outermost, the gas side facing position, completely made of a hydrophobic material, disclosed here is a pure, porous PTFE layer manufactured.
- the disclosed cell voltages for these multilayer oxygen-consuming cathodes are in the range of 2.3 to 2.4 V (at a current density of 3 kA / m 2 ) and are therefore very high.
- the electrode can not be used in certain cell constructions.
- the contacting of the SVK by an elastic mat or similar constructions from the gas side At high PTFE contents, however, the electrical conductivity of the layer decreases sharply, so that either a higher ohmic resistance arises, resulting in higher cell voltage or contacting is not possible, making the installation of the SVK in the electrolytic cell very expensive.
- the object of this invention was the production of a small-thickness multi-layer oxygen-consuming cathode, which achieves the required hydrophobicity, whereby a high impermeability to liquid and gas breakthrough can be achieved and an electrical contact from the gas side is made possible.
- the invention relates to a multilayer oxygen-consuming electrode for oxygen reduction in aqueous alkaline media, at least comprising a support which is in particular electrically conductive, a catalyst-containing layer and a hydrophobic layer, wherein the electrode is a gas containing the oxygen and the alkaline electrolyte facing side, which is characterized in that the electrode has at least two different catalyst-containing layers having a different content of catalyst, and wherein the outermost, the gas side facing layer has a smaller proportion of catalyst than the outermost of the electrolyte side facing layer and the proportion of hydrophobic material in the hydrophobic layer is not more than 8 wt .-%.
- the new multi-layer Sauerstoffverzehreldroktroden are closer to gas or electrolyte breakthrough than the known SVE s .
- the approach of the technical solution here is to make a layer or layer hydrophobic so that there the electrolyte does not penetrate into the pores.
- Another layer is made hydrophilic, so that the electrolyte and thus the reactants can penetrate water to the catalyst and the electrochemical reaction can take place. This ensures that liquid can enter the electrode on one side but can not break through the electrode to the gas side. At the same time this ensures that the gas also penetrate, but can not break through to the electrolyte side.
- a preferred oxygen-consuming electrode is characterized in that the catalyst contains silver as the catalytically active component.
- a preferred embodiment of the multi-layer oxygen-consuming electrode is characterized in that at least two catalyst-containing layers are present and the layer of the gas side facing side a catalyst content of 92 to 98 wt.% And the electrolyte side facing layer has a catalyst content of 95 to 99.9 wt.%, Wherein the 100% added portion of the catalyst layer is based on a hydrophobic polymer.
- a particularly preferred embodiment of the oxygen-consuming electrode is characterized in that at least three catalyst-containing layers are present and the gas side facing outermost layer has a catalyst content of 92 to 98 wt .-% and the electrolyte side facing outermost layer has a catalyst content of 95 to 99.9% and that there is a middle layer having a catalyst portion of more than the gas side facing outermost layer and less than in the electrolyte side facing outermost layer.

- the thickness of the new oxygen-consuming electrode is preferably 0.2 to 0.8 mm, and the thickness of the catalyst-containing layers is 0.4 mm or less.
- the SVK of the present invention may be prepared by a wet-paste or spray process which involves the selective application of layers having different properties, i. allows different and very low PTFE contents and at the same time leads to electrodes that can be operated in electrolysis cells with a very low cell voltage.
- a new oxygen-consuming electrode as described above, which is characterized in that the layers containing the catalyst are produced by applying a suspension containing silver particles to the support, drying the suspension, hot-pressing the layers and then sintering the resulting electrode.
- the particle distribution of the silver particles has a D 90 value of ⁇ 8 ⁇ m and a D 10 value of ⁇ 1 ⁇ m.
- the tap density of the silver particles for the suspension is particularly preferably in the range from 2 to 6 g / cm 3 , preferably from 3 to 5 g / cm 3 .
- the average surface area of the silver powder used in the novel process is BET in the range from 0.3 to 2.5 m 2 / g, preferably from 0.50 to 1.5 m 2 / g.
- silver powders from the company Ferro (Hanau) of the types SF9ED, 331, 311 can be used or those described in US Pat EP 115845 A2 described catalysts in which silver was precipitated on PTFE.
- Various silver powders can be used in different layers.
- the PTFE contents can be chosen differently in the layers.
- the catalyst is used, for example, with a suspension containing a hydrophobic polymer, e.g. a commercial PTFE suspension mixed.
- a hydrophobic polymer e.g. a commercial PTFE suspension mixed.
- a methylcellulose is added.
- the methyl cellulose content in the suspension is for example 0.5%.
- the preferred thickener has been found to be: polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) and polyacrylate (PA).
- the suspension may further comprise a detergent.
- Detergents are, for example, ionic or nonionic surfactants, such as those commonly known under the tradename family Tween or the substances known by the trade name family Triton.
- a detergent is used, and this is particularly preferably Triton-X 100.
- the electrode is fabricated to be coated onto a support, such as a substrate. a nickel mesh, a silver plated nickel mesh or a silver mesh the suspension is applied. This can be done by a spray method or by a doctor blade or Kisscoater method or other common methods such as e.g. Screen printing.
- the different layers of the electrode according to the invention are constructed in such a way that a layer is applied starting from the support. This middle layer has z. B. a PTFE content of 2 to 8 wt.%.
- This middle layer is made so thick that the carrier no longer has any gaps. Usually, 20 to 80% of the catalyst loading of the electrode is processed in this layer.
- a carrier which consists of a nickel mesh whose mesh size is low, already a few cycles of spraying and drying until a dense electrode is produced.
- a suspension is preferably used on the side of the electrode facing the electrolyte in which after removal of the solvent, a PTFE content of 0.2 to 5 wt.% Is formed, preferably 0.5 to 2 wt .-%.
- This layer can be made correspondingly thin.

- the loading of the entire electrodes is preferably at least 100 mg silver / cm 2 , more preferably from 140 mg / cm 2 to 250 mg / cm 2 , higher loadings show no further advantage in terms of performance with respect to cell voltage and gas and liquid tightness.
- the layers thus applied are applied to a carrier in a particularly advantageous manner when it is heated or lies on a heated substrate.
- the temperature is in particular more than 60 ° C., more preferably the temperature should be more than 100 ° C. (when working with aqueous dispersions) and preferably not more than 200 ° C.
- a pressure is applied first before the electrode is sintered.
- This can by means of a pressing tool such as a hydraulic punch or done by compaction with a roller. If the pressing takes place by means of a hydraulic ram, the pressing force is preferably at least 0.04 t / cm 2 to max. 0.4 t / cm 2 , preferably 0.08 to 0.3 t / cm 2 .
- the pressing can be carried out in particular at elevated temperature, such as a temperature of 60 and 200 ° C, preferably 80 to 150 ° C.
- the sintering is preferably carried out at a temperature of at least 200 ° C, preferably at least 250 ° C, more preferably at least 300 ° C and most preferably up to 400 ° C.
- the sintering is particularly advantageous, because in this way the residual proportions of optionally used thickener and / or detergent can be removed.
- these substances can not remain as residue in the electrode or as a film on the surface and thereby degrade the performance of the SVK, e.g. by increasing the ohmic resistance in the electrode.
- the preferred fluorinated polymers usually do not have any significant vapor pressure at these temperatures, nor do they decompose appreciably at these temperatures, so that they merely soften and, together with the metal powder, give a stabilizing film.
- the sintering process can be carried out by way of example in such a way that the electrode is heated in a process from room temperature to the desired temperature of about 340 ° C. with at least 2K / min. Also, a ramp-like temperature increase with residence times at certain temperature levels is possible. In order to reach the temperature of 300 to 350 ° C, preferably 330 to 345 ° C, the electrode is heated, for example, as follows: From room temperature to the electrode with a temperature increase of min. 2 ° C / min heated to 200 ° C, then held for 15 min at the temperature, then further heated with a temperature increase at the rate of min.
- the electrode is cooled at 10 to 200 ° C / min and is ready for use after cooling.
- the oxygen-consuming electrode according to the invention can be used, for example, in the chlor-alkali electrolysis in cells having a leaching gap between the oxygen-consuming electrode and the ion-exchange membrane or in direct contact with the ion-exchange membrane or in cells in the gap between the ion-exchange membrane and the oxygen-consuming electrode, a hydrophilic material comparable to that in US Pat US 6117286 A1 have described method.

Abstract
Description
Electrochem.
US 46024261 - Die
US 6117286 A1 beschriebenen Verfahren aufweisen.
