Definitions

  • the invention relates to a curtain applicator for coating a running paper, cardboard or other fibrous web with at least one liquid to pasty application medium in the form of a single or multi-layer curtain, which falls substantially to gravity following the fibrous web, with a above the Fibrous web arranged and at least the width of the fibrous web corresponding curtain application head, the side curtain holder are assigned to the one or more layers curtain over his fall path away, ie between a tear-off edge of the applicator head and the surface of the fibrous web at its two lateral edges and wherein the curtain applicator head and a collecting device, in particular collecting trough is associated with side walls, which is able to substantially absorb the already or still falling curtain.
  • the invention also relates to a process for curtain coating.
  • a generic device and a method are known for example from DE-A1 102 32 949. It was proposed that the application medium curtain be guided at its lateral edges for a curtain application process and a corresponding curtain application unit by means of curtain holders and by means of an operating medium.
  • curtain applicators With several known curtain applicators several application media or multiple layers of a job medium can be issued.
  • One embodiment of a curtain applicator is known inter alia from EP-A1 - 1 255 615 and is referred to in professional circles as "Slide Die", ie Gleit Anlagendüse.
  • This so-called sliding layer nozzle contains at least two application medium chambers from which the medium in each case reaches a sliding surface of the sliding layer nozzle via a supply gap, which in turn merges in each case into a slot-shaped outlet nozzle.

  • curtain holders To guide the monolayer or multilayer dispensed curtain curtain holder, as disclosed by way of example in the first-mentioned document, necessary. These curtain holders bring the curtain close to the fibrous web. Any free distance from the web causes the curtain to constrict with resulting thickening in the periphery. This then results on the surface of the fibrous web edge beads, which are of course undesirable because they lead in the initial phase of the coating process to uneven application layer and also to fouling leading the fibrous web vanes.
