Definitions

  • the present invention relates generally to an improved visor for safety helmet. More in particular, the invention refers to an improved visor for safety helmet provided with adjustable means able to allow aeration inside the helmet. The invention also refers to a safety helmet, particularly for motor cyclists, provided with such an improved visor.
  • a safety helmet typically comprises an outer cap made of rigid material, internally lined with a layer of soft material, and a visor. More in particular, the visor has an outer surface and an inner surface and is hinged to the outer cap at the user's temples, so as to be movable between an open position, in which it leaves the user's face exposed and a closed position in which it covers the user's face totally or partially.
  • outer surface will be used to indicate the surface of the visor opposite facing, in use, with respect to the face of the user wearing the helmet
  • inner surface will be used to indicate the surface of the visor facing, in use, the face of the user wearing the helmet.
  • the presence of the visor though ensuring adequate protection of the user's face, causes the user an uncomfortable sense of suffocation when it is in the closed position, especially in the summer season.
  • adjustable aeration means suitable to allow inside aeration of the helmet.
  • These adjustable aeration means typically consist of one or more windows, preferably formed in a top and/or side position of the visor, provided with opening and closing means in order to allow the user to adjust the amount of air coming into the helmet through the one or more top and/or side windows.
  • a visor is described in US 4 101 980 .
  • the main object of the present invention is therefore to eliminate or at least reduce the above drawbacks by providing an improved visor for a safety helmet able to allow adjustment of the flow rate of the air entering the helmet, meanwhile ensuring that the air is directed inside the helmet, thus allowing a substantially uniform distribution thereof so as to improve the user's sense of wellbeing and comfort.
  • Another object of the present invention is to provide an improved visor for safety helmet which has a relatively simple structure and can be obtained at competitive production costs.
  • an improved visor for safety helmet comprising at least one aeration window and outer opening/closing means of the at least one aeration window slidably fixed on said visor to allow adjustment of the air flow rate entering the safety helmet through the at least one aeration window, characterized in that it further comprises inner deflector means also slidably fixed to the visor, opposite with respect to the outer opening/closing means, so as to be able to be moved between a lower position, in which they free the at least one aeration window and an upper position, in which they intercept it, directing the air flow entering the helmet upwards so as to lick in a substantially distributed way the face of the user wearing the safety helmet.
  • a safety helmet comprising an outer cap, characterized in that it comprises an improved visor of the type defined above, hinged to the side walls of the outer cap so as to be movable between an open position, in which it leaves the user's face exposed, and a closed position in which it totally or partially covers the face of the user wearing the helmet.
  • a safety helmet indicated generally by reference numeral 10, comprises a rigid outer cap 12, a soft cap 14, which internally lines the rigid outer cap 12, and a visor 16.
  • the visor 16 is preferably hinged to the outer cap 12 by means of pins 13 fixed to the two side edges of the outer cap 12, substantially at the temples of the user wearing the cap 10. In this manner, by pushing the bottom part of the visor 16 upward, the latter is raised, by rotation around the axis of the pins 13, passing from a closed position in which it totally or partially covers the user's face, to an open position in which it leaves the user's face exposed.
  • the rigid outer cap 12 is preferably made by injection moulding of a suitable plastic material, for example acrylonitrile-butadiene-styrene (ABS), the soft inner cap 14 is made of shockproof material, for example polystyrene foam lined with a pad made of polyurethane foam and fabric, destined to come into contact with the user's head, and the visor 16 is made of transparent material, such as injection moulded polycarbonate, for example.
  • ABS acrylonitrile-butadiene-styrene
  • shockproof material for example polystyrene foam lined with a pad made of polyurethane foam and fabric, destined to come into contact with the user's head
  • the visor 16 is made of transparent material, such as injection moulded polycarbonate, for example.
  • the visor 16 has an outer surface 15, an inner surface 17 and at least one aeration window 18 able to allow the flow of outside air into the helmet 10.
  • aeration windows arranged in a V-shape to coincide with the nose/mouth area of the user are preferably provided.
  • the visor 16 is provided with outer opening/closing means 20 for the aeration windows 18, fixed to the visor 16 at the aeration windows 18.
  • the opening/closing means 20 preferably have a concave V-shape, with the concavity facing towards the outer surface 15 of the visor 16 during use, At the concavity, the opening/closing means 20 have first fitting means, preferably a pair of elastically deformable L-shaped tangs 25 ( Figure 3 ).
  • each tang of the pair of L-shaped tangs 25 is able to fit, by elastic deformation, into a respective first vertical slot 19 formed in the visor 16 immediately below the aeration windows 18. Furthermore, during use, the opening/closing means 20 are able to move, through the effect of the sliding of the L-shaped pair of tangs 25, inside the respective vertical slots 19, between a lower position, in which they free the aeration windows 21, thus allowing the flow of outside air into the helmet 10, and an upper position, in which they close the aeration windows 18, preventing the flow of air into the helmet 10. The opening/closing means 20 thus allow the flow rate of the outside air entering the safety helmet 10 through the aeration windows 18 to be adjusted.
  • the visor 22 is provided with internal deflector means 22 fixed to the visor 16 at the aeration windows 18, opposite with respect to the outer opening/closing means 20.
  • the inner deflector means 22 also preferably have a V shape ( Figure 4 ) closed at the bottom by a rounded end section 23. Furthermore, the inner deflector means 22 have an upper rim 24 at their surface facing, during use, towards the inner surface 17 of the visor 16. During use, the rounded lower end section 23 and the upper rim 24 abut against the inner surface 17 of the visor 16, so that the inner deflector means 22 are slightly spaced apart from the visor 16. An edge 26 extends upwards from the upper rim 24, also suitably spaced apart from the visor 16. The purpose of said edge 26 will be described in greater detail hereunder with reference to Figures 4 and 6 .
  • second fitting means are provided between the upper rim 24 and the rounded end section 23, preferably a pair of elastically deformable L-shaped tangs 27 ( Figure 2 ).
  • each tang of the pair of L-shaped tangs 27 is able to fit, by elastic deformation, in a respective second vertical slot 28 formed in the visor 16 immediately below the aeration windows 18.
  • the inner deflector means 22 are able to move, through the effect of sliding of the pair of L-shaped tangs 27 inside their respective vertical slots 28, between a lower position, in which they free the aeration windows 18, and an upper end position, in which the edge 26 intercepts the aeration windows 18, directing the flow of air entering the safety helmet 10 upwards.
  • the deflector means 22 thus allow the flow rate of the air entering the helmet 10 to be suitably directed, as will be described in greater detail hereunder.
  • FIGS 4 and 5 show an operating condition of the visor 16 according to the invention, in which the outer opening/closing means 20 and the inner deflector means 22, are in their lower, or down, position and thus free the aeration windows 18.
  • the outer air enters the helmet 10 through the aeration windows 18 (arrow F1) directly striking the user's nose/mouth area.
  • the rim 24 of the inner deflector means 22 closes at the bottom the aeration windows 18, which in turn are intercepted by the edge 26. It follows that the outside air entering through the aeration windows 18 is deflected upwards (arrow F2), so as to lick the user's face in a substantially distributed flow, increasing the feeling of wellbeing and comfort. Correspondingly, this deflected air flow strikes the inner surface 19 of the visor 16, avoiding annoying fogging.
  • the inner deflector means cooperating with the outer opening/closing means 20 on the visor 16 advantageously allow an air flow entering the helmet in a direct way to be transformed into a corresponding distributed air flow, which licks the user's face increasing his sense of wellbeing.
  • the air flow deflected by the deflector means is able to reach the inner surface 19 of the visor easily, preventing any fogging.
