Zusätzlich oder alternativ kann sie zur Erhöhung des Komforts und Schutzes eingesetzt werden, beispielsweise als Sitzpolster einer Radsporthose oder als Kragen. Es ist jedoch auch möglich, Abstandsstrukturen so zu gestalten, dass diese eine Sicherheitsfunktion für Gelenke, Schulter, Arme, Beine, Hüfte oder dergleichen ausüben. Die Abstandsstrukturen können dabei klassische Polster/Protektoren aus Schaumstoff ersetzen und gleichzeitig noch weitere positive Eigenschaften mit einbringen, wie Dauerhaftigkeit, Feuchtetransport, Elastizität und fehlende Nähte. Die Herstellung des flächigen Strickstücks und des abstandsgestrickten Bauteils verlaufen gleichzeitig. Vorzugsweise entsteht die definierte Kontur des abstandsgestrickten Bauteils durch Programmierung und spezielle Handhabung der Fadenmaterialien.
