Description
The invention relates to a multi-layer textile composite material, a method for its production and protectors produced using a textile composite material for protecting body parts which are characterized by curved surfaces, such as the head, knees or elbows, against mechanical impacts.
Plastic parts in the form of foam, injection molded parts or extruded parts are usually used as fillers in clothing for stiffening and protection against impact and impact, in order to protect sensitive parts of the body against external mechanical influences. These plastic parts are usually sewn into pockets. These textile protectors are used as elbow or shin guards and also as protective caps in the medical field, e.g. to protect the heads of epileptics or senior citizens who are at risk of falling. These plastic materials, mostly foams, have the disadvantage that their damping effect is highly temperature-dependent. Foams can become soft at higher temperatures. They usually have very low breathability and cannot transport moisture, e.g. sweat, away from the skin. Overall, protectors made from these plastic materials are not very comfortable to wear.
In this regard, protectors that are based on so-called spacer knitted or knitted fabrics and fabrics behave much better. These are knitted or knitted fabrics or fabrics in which at least two surfaces (cover surfaces) are connected to one another by a system of pressure-elastic pile threads. The pile threads keep the cover surfaces at a defined distance. The advantages of such a three-dimensional structure include comfort, breathability and moisture transport. They are also easy to clean. By varying the yarns used, there are numerous visual and functional design options for these 3D knitted or knitted fabrics.
For use as protectors, it is important to achieve an optimal fit. This not only optimizes the wearing comfort, but also the effect as a protector is linked to a good fit.

The present invention describes a method by which a significantly better draping of double-curved bodies can be achieved by suitably structured spacer knitted fabrics/knitted fabrics/knitted fabrics. Above all, it can also be used on thermally modified or multi-layer laminated spacer knitted fabrics/knitted fabrics. The method according to the invention can be applied both to spacer knitted fabrics and knitted fabrics/woven fabrics produced by the meter and to spacer knitted fabrics that are (flat) knitted into clothing.
2018. Rapid Deployment of Curved Surfaces via Programmable Auxetics. ACM Trans. Graph. 37, 4, Article 106 (August 2018), 13 pages. https://doi.org/ 10.1145/3197517.3201373 oder auch Mina Konakovic et al, Beyond Developable: Computational Design and Fabrication with Auxetic Materials https://doi.org/ 10.1145/3197517 beschrieben. The method according to the invention is based on the fact that a body with a doubly curved surface can be optimally draped by an auxetically structured surface. An algorithm for creating such draping surfaces with auxetic materials is e.g. in Mina Konakovic-Lukovic, Julian Panetta, Keenan Crane, and Mark Pauly. 2018. Rapid Deployment of Curved Surfaces via Programmable Auxetics. ACM Trans. Graph. 37, 4, Article 106 (August 2018), 13 pages. https://doi.org/ 10.1145/3197517.3201373 or Mina Konakovic et al, Beyond Developable: Computational Design and Fabrication with Auxetic Materials https://doi.org/ 10.1145/3197517.
Auxetic materials are characterized by having a negative Poisson's ratio. For auxetic materials, when stretched in a lateral direction, strain occurs in the direction perpendicular thereto. The simplest auxetic structure is the so-called honeycomb structure. Two-dimensional auxetic structures can be created by cutting identically shaped, usually differently sized openings into the surface in such a way that joints are created that can deflect tensile forces by 90°. These openings can be cut into the surface, for example, by laser cutting, punching or 3D printing. By appropriately distributing these openings, any body with a curved surface can now be draped, ie encased, as described in the above-mentioned literature. In the following, a method is described as to how this method can be applied to spacer knitted fabrics or knitted fabrics/woven fabrics produced in a planar manner, without the advantageous properties of the knitted fabrics or knitted fabrics/woven fabrics being adversely affected as a result. The decisive factor here is that when the openings are cut into the knitted or warp-knitted spacer structure, the pile threads do not come out detach from the remaining knitted fabric or warp-knitted fabric. This problem is solved by the teaching given in claims 1 and 2. It consists in embroidering the auxetic structure, which is determined by an algorithm or iteratively and optimally draping the curved body, into the spacer knitted fabric. A Kevlar thread can be used as embroidery thread. The openings are then cut out, for example with a laser or a punching tool. If the spacer structure consists of low-melting yarns, it is sufficient to melt the cover surfaces and pile threads of the spacer structure around the openings in such a way that the pile threads can no longer come loose.
A structure conforming to the Kagome lattice is flexible enough to drape a variety of curved surfaces. One can add hinges to the auxetic structure that will stabilize the final three-dimensional structure. With a suitable distribution of the openings, the later three-dimensional structure can be programmed into the flat, quasi two-dimensional spacer fabric. The final three-dimensional structure, e.g. the head protector, can be produced by inflating the flat, auxetically structured spacer fabric or knitted fabric or by the effect of gravity on the spacer structure. The protector thus created can be fitted with an aesthetically designed shell and lining to optimize appearance and comfort. This cover can also be designed as protection against the effects of sharp objects and/or as protection against the effects of UV rays on the spacer knitted/knitted fabric/woven fabric. The lining also serves to fix the spacer knitted fabric / knitted fabric / fabric.
