Claims (14)

  1. An applicator (3) comprising a stem (5) and an applicator member (8) at an end of the stem, the applicator member comprising:
    • a core (40); and
    • projecting elements (41, 18) that extend from the core (40), the applicator member including a corkscrewed portion having an envelope surface with a flat cross-section,
    characterized in that
    the greatest transverse dimension (ℓ) of the corkscrewed portion lies in the range 8 mm to 16 mm and the long axes (Xp, Xd) of the proximal and distal cross-sections of the corkscrewed portion are angularly offset around the longitudinal axis of the core by less than 90°.
  2. The applicator according to claim 1, the thickness of the corkscrewed portion lying in the range of 2 mm to 6.5 mm.
  3. The applicator according to any one of claims 1 or 2, the corkscrewed portion extending over at least half the length of the applicator member.
  4. The applicator according to any preceding claim, the long axes (Xp) and (Xd) of the proximal and distal cross-sections of the corkscrewed portion being angularly offset by an angle (β) that lies in the range of 20° to 80°.
  5. The applicator according to any preceding claims, the angle (β) lying in the range of 25 and 35°.
  6. The applicator according to any preceding claims, the largest width of a cross-section of the corkscrewed portion being at least 30% wider than the thickness (e) of the corkscrewed portion measured in a cutting plane perpendicular to the longitudinal axis of the core in a direction perpendicular to the largest width.
  7. The applicator according to any preceding claim, the longitudinal axis of the core (40) being straight.
  8. The applicator according to any preceding claim, the largest width (ℓ) of a cross-section of the corkscrewed portion being at least 3 mm greater than its thickness (e).
  9. The applicator according to any preceding claim, the corkscrewed portion presenting two opposite main faces (50) that are parallel to each other.
  10. The applicator according to any one of claims 1 to 9, the corkscrewed portion being at constant pitch.
  11. The applicator according to any preceding claim, the core being twisted.
  12. The applicator according to any one of claims 5 and 6, with /e ≥ 1.3, for at least one cross-section of the core.
  13. The applicator according to claim 1, the applicator member and the protruding elements being molded.
  14. A method of manufacturing a brush for an applicator according to any one of claims 1 to 13, the method comprising the following steps:
    a)making a blank of a twisted-core brush of envelope surface that is circularly cylindrical, and of diameter lying in the range 8 mm to 16 mm;
    b) machining the brush over at least a portion of its length, so as to obtain a blank with a flat cross-section; and
    c1) corkscrewing the core through an angle (β) that is strictly less than 90°; or
    c2) machining the blank, while turning the brush relative to the machining tool, so as to obtain a brush that presents a portion with a cross-section that is flat over at least a fraction of its length, the long axes (Xp) and (Xd) of the proximal and distal cross-sections of the machined portion defining an angle (β) that is strictly less than 90°.
