Definitions

  • the invention relates to a grill for mounting to an in-duct type fan and also to a decorative panel for mounting to a grill.
  • In-duct axial extractor fans are commonly found around the home in kitchens and bathrooms. They are generally either fitted when the house is built or they can be installed later as part of DIY projects or when replacing existing units.
  • In-duct fans are fitted into a duct which is fitted into a hole in the wall or ceiling.
  • the duct leads through the hole in the wall, usually to the outside for venting the extracted air.
  • Ceiling mounted duct fans are mounted in a hole in the ceiling and a duct (usually flexible duct) carries the air to an outside vent.
  • the grills which are mounted to the front of extractor fans can be of a variety of shapes.
  • the shape of grill will often be chosen in order to match the interior decoration of a room or to fit in with a certain theme or style.
  • the interior decoration comprises tiling which more often than not is square.
  • Grills are typically in the form of a simple clip-on facade.
  • the fan unit is provided with a mounting structure for clipping the grill to.
  • Fan units are typically sold as a whole package including the fan and the grill, so a fan sold with a circular grill will have a circular mounting structure and a fan sold with a square grill will have a square mounting structure.
  • an in-duct fan When an in-duct fan is installed, it is wired to the mains electrical supply and then inserted into the duct. Then the main fan unit is fixed to the wall or ceiling, typically by means of screws screwed into plastic plugs in the wall. After the fan unit is fixed in place, the grill is clipped onto the mounting structure.
  • the mounting of the fan to the wall results in an unsatisfactory alignment. This can happen particularly when houses are first being fitted out and the fitters mount the fans carelessly and in a hurry and before the room has been decorated. Later on, when the house is fully decorated, a misaligned fan with a square grill is very noticeable. To correct the alignment of the grill, the alignment of the whole fan must be corrected.

  • the grill can go some way towards providing an acceptable front end to an extractor fan, it still has a rather functional appearance and in some circumstances it may be desired to provide a decorative front panel in front of the grill.
