Durch die senkrechten Stöße zwischen den einzelnen Holzlatten hatte die ausgeschalte Säule eine unregelmäßige Oberfläche mit unvermeidlichen Betonauswaschungen. Um eine glatte Oberfläche zu erreichen, mussten derart gegossene Säulen nachträglich verputzt oder verkleidet werden. Heute werden zumeist Stahlschalungen verwendet, die aus halbrunden Schalungselementen zu einem Mantel zusammengesetzt werden. Um die erforderliche Höhe zu erreichen, werden bei größeren Höhen die Elemente senkrecht aufeinander montiert. Diese Schalungen haben ein relativ hohes Gewicht und können nur mit Hilfe eines Kranes aufgestellt werden. Neben den waagrechten Stößen sind zwei senkrechte Stöße vorhanden. Die Schalungselemente sind nur für jeweils einen bestimmten Säulendurchmesser verwendbar, wodurch der Materialaufwand bei der Herstellung einer Serie aus verschieden dicken Säulen erheblich vergrößert wird. Zu den Nachteilen zählen auch die entstehenden höheren Transport- und Lagerkosten, sowie der relativ hohe Anschaffungspreis.The production of concrete round columns was done in the past with great effort using wooden formwork.
