Definitions

  • the present invention relates to a sill-mounted closure device for the door of the body of trucks, trailers and the like.
  • Some doors of the bodies of vehicles such as trucks and the like and the corresponding trailers are provided traditionally with so-called sill-mounted opening and closure devices.
  • These devices generally comprise at least one rod, which is supported so that it can rotate within the door and protrudes partially from it at the top and at the bottom, and an actuation handle and a substantially hook-shaped wing are rigidly coupled respectively at its lower and upper ends.
  • the handle is coupled by snap action, by way of button-operated locking and release means, to a base which is fixed to the frame of the body below the door, while the hook-shaped wing is coupled to a respective abutment, which is rigidly coupled to the frame of the body above the door.
  • the aim of the present invention is to meet the above-mentioned requirements, by providing a sill-mounted closure device for opening and closing the door of the body of trucks, trailers and the like, which allows to lock safely said door in the open position, so as to allow loading and unloading operations without having to provide and fit specifically designed devices.
  • an object of the present invention is to provide a structure that is simple, relatively easy to provide in practice, safe in use, effective in operation, and has a relatively low cost.
  • the present sill-mounted closure device for the door of the body of trucks, trailers and the like, of the type comprising at least one base, which is rigidly coupled to the frame of the body below the door and is provided with a coupling element for at least one lever which is keyed rigidly at the lower end of at least one rod, which is supported so that it can rotate within said door, and at least one upper abutment, which is rigidly coupled to the frame of the body, for at least one hook-shaped element, which is fixed to the upper end of said rod, said lever being provided with means for safety retention to said base and being rotatable manually from at least one angular position for fastening the door, in which it is engaged in said coupling element and in which said hook-shaped element is rigidly coupled, monolithically with said lever, to said upper abutment, to at least one angular position for freely opening the door, in which it is disengaged from said coupling element and in which said hook
  • the reference numeral 1 generally designates a sill-mounted closure device for the door of the body of trucks, trailers and the like according to the invention.
  • the sill-mounted closure device is of the type that comprises at least one base, generally designated by the reference numeral 2, which is rigidly coupled to the frame of a body 3 of the truck below a door 4; the base 2 is provided with a coupling element 5 for at least one lever, generally designated by the reference numeral 6, which is keyed rigidly at the lower end of a rod 7, which is supported so that it can rotate within the door 4.
  • the closure further comprises at least one upper abutment, generally designated by the reference numeral 8 and rigidly coupled to the frame of the body 3 above the door 4, for at least one hook-shaped element, generally designated by the reference numeral 9, which is fixed at the upper end of the rod 7.
  • the door 4 can support, so that they can rotate, usually at least one pair of mutually parallel rods 7, a central one and a lateral one, in order to better ensure the tight fastening of the door 4.
  • the closure according to the invention is particularly effective in use if it is installed at the lateral rod, as will become better apparent hereinafter.
  • the lever 6 can turn manually in both directions from an angular position for fastening the door 4, in which it is engaged in the coupling element 5 and in which, monolithically with said lever, the hook-shaped element 9 is coupled to the upper abutment 8, to an angular position for freely opening the door, in which it is disengaged from the coupling element 5 and in which, monolithically with said lever, the hook-shaped element 9 is disengaged from the upper abutment 8.
  • the lever 6 is provided conveniently with safety means, generally designated by the reference numeral 10, for coupling to the base 2 ( Figure 3), which are adapted to prevent the accidental disengagement of the lever 6 from the base 2; the safety retention means 10 can advantageously be actuated easily by way of at least one button 11 with the same hand with which the lever 6 is turned.
  • the base 2, the lever 6, the hook-shaped element 9 and the upper abutment 8 have a substantially laminar shape, which is contoured conveniently so as to minimize its weight and at the same time optimize its mechanical characteristics of strength and rigidity. Further, in addition to minimizing weight, in this manner a substantial containment of the use of raw material is also achieved.
  • the lever 6 is conveniently and preferably made of a material such as steel plate, of a thickness which is chosen appropriately in order to withstand the typical stresses to which the device is subjected; as an alternative, however, it is possible to use other materials having equivalent mechanical characteristics.
  • the lever 6, preferably made of materials such as steel plate, has a substantially U-shaped transverse cross-section, the geometry of which can vary from one end to the other, so as to form an upper surface 12 and two mutually opposite contoured sides 13 and 14; the upper surface 12 further forms a longitudinal stiffening rib 15.
  • the lever 6 forms, at its mutually opposite ends, an end lug 16, which is adapted to engage in the coupling element 5, and a substantially elongated terminal grip portion 17.
  • the lever 6 forms, preferably at the end of the terminal grip portion 17, at least one seat 18 within which the coupling element 5 is adapted to engage detachably (Figure 4): in this manner, as shown in particular in Figure 1, the door 4, after being opened, can be kept stably open during loading and unloading operations, thus preventing it from closing accidentally due to impacts, wind action or other accidental and undesirable events.
  • the seat 18 is provided substantially at the end of the terminal grip portion 17 of the lever 6.
  • the coupling element 5 ( Figures 3 and 4) conveniently comprises at least one sort of transverse pin 19, under which the terminal lug 16 of the lever 6 is designed to engage in the angular fastening position; accordingly, the seat 18 has a substantially C-shaped transverse cross-section and is provided so as to pass transversely through the terminal grip portion 17 of the lever 6.
  • the terminal grip portion 17 forms a sort of receptacle or chamber 20, which is adapted to accommodate a respective insert 21 for protecting the hands of the operator: the seat 18 is therefore provided so as to pass transversely through both the contoured sides 13, 14 and through the insert 21.
  • the insert 21, which forms a distribution of ergonomic protrusions 22, adapted to facilitate the grip of the lever 6, is preferably made of a synthetic material such as plastics or of another material having suitable characteristics (for example rubber).
  • the seat 18, in its portion provided through the insert, can therefore expand substantially elastically and is adapted to accommodate, by snap manual insertion on the part of the operator, the transverse pin 19 of the coupling element 5 of the base 2.
  • the insert 21 is rigidly coupled to the chamber 20 of the lever 6 by means of a pair of through pins 23, which are inserted through the insert 21 and the contoured sides 13, 14.
  • the lever 6 forms a sort of perimetric border 24, which connects the upper surface 12 and the contoured sides 13, 14 and is sized appropriately so as to give the lever 6 optimum strength and rigidity (by increasing the resisting cross-section without increasing substantially the weight of said part).
  • first keying holes 25 for the rod 7, which are mutually opposite and coaxial and in which a first tubular portion 26 is fixed with riveted ends (or with any another cross-section suitable to prevent rotation); the rod 7 is inserted and locked in said first portion by means of connecting elements of the type with exposed pin (not shown), or of the type with concealed pin (anti-theft) or by welding.
  • the pin coupling in particular, allows to disassemble rapidly and easily the rod 7 with respect to the lever 6 for maintenance, part replacement, and other operations.
  • the means 10 for safety retention of the lever 6 to the base 2 comprise, as mentioned above, at least one button 11, which is supported so that it can rotate about at least one respective pivot 29, which is fixed, at its ends, to the contoured sides 13, 14 of the lever 6.
  • the button 11 forms an extension 30, which ends with a sort of tooth 31, and a protrusion 32; the button 11 can turn advantageously about the pivot 29 from a position for retaining the lever 6, in which the tooth 31 is engaged in the base 2 (as will become better apparent hereinafter), to a position for disengagement of the lever 6, in which the tooth 31 is disengaged from the base 2 so as to allow the free rotation of the lever 6.
  • the possibility to open the device with a single hand is particularly advantageous, since it facilitates, speeds up and simplifies the loading and unloading operations.
  • the safety retention means 10 comprise two torsion springs (not shown for the sake of clarity in the figures, but of a substantially known and traditional type), which are keyed along the pivot 29 on opposite sides and are suitable to keep the button 11 elastically in the position for retaining the lever 6.
  • Each of the torsion springs has a first end, which is associated with the button 11, and a second end, which abuts against the lever 6. The fitting of two torsion springs associated with the button 11 allows to keep said button elastically in the retention position even if one of the two springs breaks.
  • the lever 6 forms a substantially circular hole 33, at which at least one key-operated safety pawl 34 for retaining the button 11 in said position for retaining the lever 6 is fitted, said pawl being adapted in particular to abut at the protrusion 32 of the button 11, so that said button cannot be turned unless said pawl is operated by means of its own key.
  • the lever 6 is affected, at the longitudinal rib 15, by two first through slots 35, 36, the function of which will be clarified hereinafter.
  • the base 2 ( Figure 5) is substantially laminar and is shaped conveniently so as to minimize weight and at the same time optimize its mechanical characteristics of strength and rigidity. It is preferably made of a material such as steel plate, or of another material having equivalent characteristics and having a thickness chosen suitably in order to withstand the typical stresses to which the device is subjected.
  • the base 2 is affected by at least three circular holes 37 for fixing to the frame of the body of the truck 3 by means of screws (not shown in the figures); said screws, when the device is assembled, are concealed by the lever 6 in the angular closure position.
  • the base 2 is affected, substantially at one of its ends, by an opening 38, which is substantially D-shaped and the straight side of which is constituted by a raised edge 39, in which the tooth 31 of the button 11 is suitable to engage in said position for retaining the lever 6 to the base 2.
  • the direction of the rotation of the button 11 about the pivot 29 allows to obtain the maximum assurance of closure against any accidental and unexpected event: any impact from the outside against the button in fact obviously acts in the direction for closing the device, i.e., facilitates the engagement of the tooth 31 below the edge 39.
  • any impact of the load from the inside produces a deformation which facilitates the action of the button 11 in the direction for closing the device.
  • the button 11 is provided with minimum space occupation and so that it does not protrude from the profile of the lever 6, so as to remain perfectly protected against any shearing impacts.
  • the button 11 is released by pressing with the finger in a direction which is substantially parallel to the lever 6 (edgewise), not perpendicular thereto, as occurs in all traditional and known devices.
  • the base 2 comprises second slots 40, 41, which are adapted to be arranged, when the lever 6 is in the angular closure position, below the longitudinal rib 15 and adjacent to the first slots 35 and 36, so that it is possible to fix thereto custom seals and the like, not shown in the figures.
  • the second slots 40, 41 are provided in a plate 42, which is inserted in a respective slit 43 provided in the base 2, and comprises an end portion 44 which is substantially folded at right angles for fixing to the base 2, for example by means of at least one rivet; at the slit 43, the base 2 in fact forms a sort of raised portion 45, below which the folded portion 44 is arranged.
  • the element 5 for coupling the end lug 16 of the lever 6 comprises conveniently at least one bracket 46, which has a substantially U-shaped transverse cross-section and is affected, at its ends, by two mutually opposite coaxial holes in which the transverse pivot 19 is locked, the lug 16 engaging below it with the lever 6 in the angular fastening position; the bracket 46 is fixed to the base 2 by way of at least one pair of rivets 47, which can engage in fixing holes 48 and 49.
  • the base 2 conveniently comprises first elements for retaining the lever 6 in the angular closure position in a substantially vertical direction, generally designated by the reference numeral 50, and first elements for retaining the lever 6 in the angular fastening position, in a substantially horizontal direction, which are generally designated by the reference numeral 51.
  • the first elements 50 for retaining in a vertical direction the lever 6 comprise conveniently two first mutually opposite lateral flaps 52, 53, which are formed by the base 2 and are folded substantially at right angles thereto and expand from one end to the other of the base 2; the first lateral flaps 52, 53 are adapted to engage respectively at the contoured sides 13, 14 of the lever 6, and in particular inside them, so as to prevent their accidental movements in a vertical direction. Further, the coupling of the first lateral flaps 52, 53 with the contoured sides 13, 14 allows to close the device in critical conditions in which the lever 6 is not aligned perfectly vertically with the base 2 (for example when the inclined position of the vehicle produces a slight rotation of the door, caused by play in the couplings, or other similar situations).
  • the first elements 51 for retaining in a horizontal direction the lever 6 comprise two first recesses 54, 55, which are provided in the first lateral flaps 52, 53 and in which the transverse pin 28 is adapted to engage transversely; this allows to prevent, when the lever 6 is in the closed position, accidental movements in a horizontal direction. Further, the closure of the device is facilitated also in conditions in which the lever 6 is not perfectly aligned horizontally with the base 2.
  • the shape of the elements described above is such that no stress during operation is transferred to the engagement region of the button 11, which in closure devices of the traditional type is certainly the most critical.
  • the hook-shaped element 9 ( Figure 6) is preferably made of a material such as steel plate. Its transverse cross-section is shaped substantially like an inverted letter U, with a geometry which is variable from one end to the other and with a suitably chosen thickness so as to form an upper face 56 and two contoured sides 57 and 58.
  • the hook-shaped element 9 forms a sort of perimetric border 59, which connects the upper face 56 to the contoured sides 57 and 58 and helps to give optimum strength and rigidity to the part while keeping its weight low.
  • the contoured sides 57 and 58 of the hook-shaped element 9 form respective second holes 60 for keying the rod 7, which are mutually opposite and coaxial and inside which a second tubular portion 61 is fixed: in the second tubular portion 61, the rod 7 is inserted and locked by means of connecting elements of the exposed-pin type (not shown), or of the concealed-pin (anti-theft) type or by welding.
  • the pin means allow to disassemble easily and quickly the rod 7 for maintenance and replacement of parts and the like.
  • contoured sides 57 and 58 are affected by respective second recesses 62, both of which are substantially shaped like an inverted letter V with a rounded vertex.
  • the hook-shaped element 9 forms a sort of tapering beak 63, which is adapted to engage in the upper abutment 8.
  • the upper abutment 8 ( Figure 7) is made of a material such as steel plate of suitable thickness.
  • the upper abutment 8 is fixed to the frame of the body of the truck preferably by means of suitable screws, not shown in the figures, which engage in two holes 64 provided at the ends of the upper abutment 8.
  • the upper abutment 8 positively comprises second elements, generally designated by the reference numeral 65, for retaining in the angular closure position the hook-shaped element 9 in a horizontal direction, and second elements, generally designated by the reference numeral 66, for retaining in the same angular closure position the hook-shaped element 9 in a vertical direction, the shape of said elements being fully similar to that of the similar means provided in the base 2.
  • the upper abutment 8 forms two substantially flat, parallel and mutually opposite lugs 67 and 68 for fixing the ends of a cross-member 69, below which the beak 63 of the hook-shaped element 9 is suitable to engage in the angular position for fastening the door.
  • the lugs 67 and 68 form respectively folded guiding portions 70 for the easy insertion of the beak 63 below the cross-member 69.
  • the method of use of the sill-mounted device according to the invention is intuitive according to what has been described above.
  • the embodiment of the present invention shall be carried out in the most scrupulous compliance with the statutory and regulatory provisions related to the products of the invention or correlated thereto and following any required authorization of the corresponding competent authorities, with particular reference to regulations related to safety, environmental pollution and health.
