Bei der üblichen Start-Ziel-Projektierung sucht das Stellwerk aus den möglichen Fahrwegen zwischen Start und Ziel nach einer hierarchischen Ordnung einen geeigneten Fahrweg heraus. Dieser Fahrweg darf nicht durch ein anderes Fahrzeug belegt oder quasi vorbestellt sein und auf keinem seiner Gleiselemente Befahrbarkeitssperren aufweisen. Die Befahrbarkeitssperren in Form der oben genannten Relaisgruppen müssen nachgerüstet werden. Dazu ist ein kostenintensiver und problematischer Umbau unter "rollendem Rad", d. h. im laufenden Betrieb erforderlich. Häufig ist eine Nachrüstung auch aus Platzgründen nicht möglich. Um eine Nachrüstung im Relaisstellwerk zu sparen, können die Befahrbarkeitssperren außerhalb des Relaisstellwerks in der Fernsteuerung installiert werden, die ihrerseits die Ausgabe eines Fahrstraßenkommandos verhindert, wenn die Befahrbarkeitssperre in der Fernsteuerung gesetzt ist.
