Definitions

  • the present invention relates to a blister strip and a dry powder inhaler comprising such a strip.
  • Inhalers are used to deliver pharmaceutical compounds to the lungs of a patient.
  • an inhaler typically contains or provides a mixture of pharmaceutical compound particles and air or propellant.
  • the mixture is delivered by inhalation of the patient at a mouthpiece placed on the inhaler with air or a propellant transporting the particles of pharmaceutical compound in the lungs of the patients.
  • dry powder inhalers the particles of pharmaceutical compound, in the form of a fine dry powder, are entrained in an air flow and inhaled by the patient. Dry powder inhalers are often used to treat asthma. However, pharmaceutical compounds delivered via a dry powder inhaler can also be used to treat many cases, including cases not correlated to the lungs, via systemic absorption of the pharmaceutical compound into the bloodstream, through the lungs.
  • a dry powder inhaler capable of delivering a large number of doses, such as 60, 90, or even 120 doses, before the inhaler needs to be recharged or replaced, would be advantageous.
  • Some proposed dry powder inhalers achieve the goal of providing a large number of doses by individually measuring one dose at a time from a bulk powder storage compartment in the inhaler.
  • it is difficult or even impossible to seal the water vapor of the bulk powder As a result, agglutination or powder aggregation or particle size growth may result, affecting the how much the powder distributed in the air. This tends to decrease the dose actually planned for the patient and / or lead to inconsistent doses.
  • inhalers For example, it may be difficult to avoid double dosing with these types of inhalers, that is, opening two or more of the bags or containers on the dosing strip before inhalation, resulting in patient to inhale a larger than expected dose.
  • known metered-dose inhalers release each dose from the strip via mechanical actuation by the patient, a dose can be released or opened from the strip and exposed to water vapor in the environment unless the dose is quickly inhaled.
  • some known metered dose band inhalers have relatively complex mechanical configurations, with consequent complexity and manufacturing cost.
  • a strip of blisters or metering intended for use in an inhaler comprises blisters or containers formed in a layer in the form of a strip.
  • a covering layer is attached to the strip-shaped layer sealing a dose of a pharmaceutical compound of dry powder inside each of the blisters.
  • a tear tape is attached to the cover layer on each of the blisters, preferably with locally applied adhesive.
  • the covering layer is advantageously permanently fixed to the layer in the form of a strip.
  • the strip is separable into a first section of tape comprising the strip-shaped layer and the areas of the covering layer surrounding the blisters, and a second section of tape comprising the tear tape and discs spaced from the layer. cover attached to the tear tape.
  • the blisters advantageously contain a dry powder or a liquid.
  • the blister strip is used in a dry powder inhaler having a powder dispersion motor comprising balls displaceable within a dispersion chamber.
  • a blister opening system inside the inhaler sequentially opens vesicles on the strip, releasing the powder content of each blister in an air flow path leading to the dispersion chamber .
  • the blister opening system is actuated by inhalation.
  • the blister opening system automatically opens a blister. Additional blisters cannot be opened without resetting the inhaler and inhaling again at the mouthpiece. As a result, the possibility of inadvertently dispensing multiple doses is reduced (during a single inhalation).
  • the blister opening system comprises first and second rotary elements.
  • a spring biases the first rotary member to rotate in a first direction.
  • An inhalation trigger holds the first element against rotation until the trigger is released, inhaling through a mouthpiece of the inhaler. Solicitation of the first rotary member is preferably accomplished by tensioning a spring by pivoting a dust cap at the mouthpiece.
  • the blister opening system exerts a force only on the tape to be torn or pulled from the strip. This avoids potential damage to the other layers or tapes of the strip which in reality form the seal around the dose.
  • the layers or ribbons which seal the dose are devoid of holes or openings used by the blister opening system to advance the strip. This is intended for a compact band configuration.
  • the invention also resides in the subsystems, the components, and the steps as described below.

  • the dosing strip 150 is separated into a used cover tape 170 comprising the tear tape 158, the adhesive 156 (if used) and the covering discs 168, and a tape in the form of strips 172 comprising the layer or the ribbon in the form of strips 152 and the areas of covering layer 154 surrounding the blisters 160.
  • the inhaler 20 is removed from its packaging or packaging
  • the dust cap 30 is in the closed position as shown in Figures 1 and 2. While preferably holding the inhaler in an upright position with the upper housing 24 facing upward, the user removes the dust cap 30 of the mouthpiece 28 in the open position as shown in FIG. 3. This movement advances the strip 150 and opens a bhster or a container
  • the inhaler 20 is provided with the front end 155 of the reel 60 of the strip 150 engaged between the capstan 70 and the drive reel 76. Specifically, at least one and preferably two pairs of strip pins extend through the drive holes 165 in the tear tape positioned between the blisters 160. No drive holes are provided in the stripe layers and in the cover layers. As shown in Figure 6, in the closed position, the dust cap 30 covers the mouthpiece 28. This helps keep the mouthpiece 28 clean between each use. Going to Figure 7, the user pivots the dust cap 30 from the closed position shown in Figure 6 to the open position shown in Figure 7. The loading cam 102 moves with the dust cap 30, since 'it is attached to the lower arm 36 of the dust cap 30.
  • This movement (approximately 130 ° in the embodiment shown) energizes the spring 98 which in turn biases the pawl 88 in the forward direction (direction of clockwise in Figure 7).
  • the inhaler can alternatively be configured such that a spring is energized by moving the dust cap from an open position to a closed position.
  • the recess 104 in the cam moves in alignment with or adjacent to the bottom plate 114 of the inhalation flap assembly 110.
  • the outwardly deflecting pawl arms 94 engage with the pawl teeth 82 on the inner surface of the drive coil 76.
  • the pawl 88 and the drive coil 76 cannot rotate, because the trigger arm 90 of the pawl 88 is held against the assembly inhalation shutter 110.
  • the end of the trigger arm 90 bears against the pivot point 116 and against the inhalation wall 112. This prevents the pawl 88 and the drive coil 76 from any rotation . Consequently, with reference to FIGS. 6 and 7, the opening movement of the dust cap 30 only energizes the spring 98 without displacing (significantly) the other components of the belt opening / advancing system 58.
  • the user places the mouthpiece 28 in the mouth and inhales.
  • Inhalation causes air to flow through the air flow path 50. Specifically, air flows into the housing 22 through the inlet 52 in the lower housing 26. The air then pushes against the inhalation wall 112 of the inhalation shutter assembly 110, flows into the inlet duct of the chamber 46, through the chamber 42 and exits at the nozzle. buccal 28. The air pushing against the inhalation wall 112 causes the inhalation flap assembly 110 to pivot, counter-clockwise, as shown in FIG. 8. This moves the trigger arm 90 of the pawl 88 of the pivot point 116.
  • the drive coil 76 also moves, driven by the pawl 88.
  • the notched gear 78 on the drive coil 76 also drives the notched gear 72 on the capstan 70, causing the capstan 70 to turn in the direction opposite with an equal level of rotation.
  • the tape pins 80 extending toward the drive holes 165 in the tear tape 158 pulls the metering tape 150 forward. Referring momentarily to FIG. 10 A, the movement of the drive reel removes the tear tape 158 from the tape in the form of strips 152.

  • This movement turns the pawl 88 in a second direction, opposite to the first direction (the second direction being in the anticlockwise direction in FIG. 9).
  • the connection between the pawl 88 and the loading cam 102 allows the movement of the dust cap 30 to turn the pawl 88 only in the second direction, that is to say anticlockwise.
  • Figure 9 The opening movement of the dust cap 30 does not rotate the cam 28. When the dust cap is closed, the pawl 88 rotates anti-clockwise.
  • the drive coil 76 does not move, since the arms of pawl 94 on the pawl 88 flex inward and slide over the pawl teeth 82 on the drive coil 76. Consequently, during the step of returning to the initial position shown in FIG. 4, when the dust cap 30 is returned to its closed position, the drive coil 76, the capstan 70, and the strip 150 do not move.
  • the counterclockwise movement of the pawl 88 with the closing of the dust cap 30 generates a return of the trigger arm 90 of the pawl 88 to the position shown in FIG. 6 and simultaneously puts the assembly back in the initial position of the inhalation flap 110 to the position shown in FIG. 6.
  • the cam recess 104 moves away from the bottom plate 114 of the inhalation flap assembly 110, preventing movement of the assembly of inhalation shutter.
  • the inhaler 20 is then ready to repeat the steps described above to deliver another dose of a powder of pharmaceutical compounds contained in the next blister 160 approaching the opening / advancing system of the band 58.
  • the dosing strip 150 can contain up to 120 doses or more. After all doses have been used, the inhaler 20 can be discarded. Alternatively, in a reusable configuration, the housing 22 can be opened, the used tapes 170 and 172 removed and discarded, and a replacement tape 150 in the form of a spool 60 installed.
  • the tape pins 80 on the drive coil 76 pull on the tear tape 158 only after the tear tape 158 is separated from the tape in the form of tape 152. This allows apply high tape displacement forces to tape 150 without damaging it. As relatively high forces can be used to move the strip 150 and to open the blisters as shown in Figure 13, movement of the strip and opening of the blister can be accomplished quickly, so that the release of the powder takes place at or near the inhalation spike, when there is a rapid air flow through the air flow path 50. Therefore, the inhaler 20 can be actuated by inhalation.
  • another advantage is the relatively simple shape of the inhaler 20. No clutch or other complicated mechanical component or mechanism is necessary.
  • the strip 150 has regularly spaced blisters 160. As the strip tapes used 170 and 172 are not wound on the drive coils, there is no need to compensate for the clutch or the movement of the drive mechanism. The movement of the opening / advancing system of the strip 58 is rather identical for each blister.
  • the tear tape 158 is a separate layer or tape (preferably polyester) not involved in sealing the powder, it can be adapted to transfer high forces for the movement of the tape 150. This is contrary to Existing band inhalers which move the band by playing on the sheet metal layers, which are not able to handle high forces as well.
  • the drive coil 76 apphque a force to move the band 150 not only of the pinch or the open position of the bhster 174, but also on a sector of the drive coil 76 up to or above 90 °. This helps to apply forces to advance and open the strip 150 quickly and evenly.
  • the user only needs to move the dust cap between the open and closed positions. No other user or patient manipulation or movement is required. As all other operations in the inhaler 20 are automatic, the human factors for using the inhaler 20 are greatly simplified. Therefore, training the patient, and maintaining a correct dosing regimen is also simplified.
  • the blister opening system 58 can of course also be used in other types of inhalers, having various air flow paths, chambers and different mouthpieces.
  • the dispersion chamber 40 is generally preferred, it is not an essential element.
  • the blister opening system 58 can be energized by a separate lever or other element independent of the dust cap.
  • FIGS. 14 and 15 represent a second embodiment 200 comprising an alternative blister / strip opening system 201, similar to the system 58 described above.
  • the bhster opening system: forward of the alternative band 201 comprises a capstan 202 having recesses 71 for receiving the blisters, similar to the capstan 70.
  • the system 201 also comprises a drive coil 204 similar to the drive coil 76.
  • the strip 150 is wrapped around the capstan 202 with the blisters facing inwards, such that they are received or engaged with the recesses 71.
  • the strip 150 separates into a ribbon of used vesicle 172, which is pushed into space 68 and into a covering tape 170.
  • the covering tape envelops a pressure roller 206, the drive coil 204, and a drive pressure roller 208.
  • the pressure roller 206 reverses the direction of the path of the strip and helps to keep the strip in engagement with the capstan 202.
  • the drive pressure roller 208 helps to keep the strip 150 wound around the drive coil 204.
  • the pressure rollers 206 and 208 are devoid of tension rollers rotatable.
  • the opening of the air flow path in the chamber inlet duct is located between the capstan 202 and the pressure roller 206.
  • the operation of the vesicle opening / advancement system of the band 201 is similar to the system 58, with the following differences.
  • the capstan 202 is driven or turned by the advancing strip.
  • the force of advancement of the strip and opening of the blister is preferably applied to the strip, in this embodiment, by the drive reel 204 acting on the tear tape 158. As little or no force is applied to the blisters, and because the capstan 202 and the drive coil 204 do not touch each other, potential damage or alteration of the blisters is avoided.
  • the drive holes 165 in the strip 150 need only be in the tear tape, not in the strip layer 152 or the cover layer 154. This helps maintain the integrity of the seal provided in each blister.
  • the water vapor migrates in the bhsters after a certain time through the layer of adhesive or through the microscopic interstices between the layers 152 and 154 (rather than through the layers themselves). Consequently, the wider the continuous layer of glue, the better the sealing or barrier properties of the finished strip.
  • the arrangement of the drive holes 165 in the layers 152 and 154 would require that the strip 150 be wider to obtain a given quality or level of tightness. By avoiding the drive holes 165 in the layers 152 and 154, the band 150 and the inhaler can be more compact.
  • gears 72 and 78 are provided on the drive coil 204 and the capstan 202, and are in engagement with each other.
  • the capstan 202 and the drive coil 204 can still be spaced far enough apart to avoid damage or alteration of the blisters when the blisters approach the open position.
