  • the concentration of barrier chemicals as supplied by a vendor is not significant as long as the appropriate dilution may be obtained to provide the barrier compositions suitable for use in the present invention.
  • the composition as provided may be diluted prior to use on the floor covering panels. Any suitable solvent may be used for the dilution but water results in a lesser environmental impact from industrial use of the active ingredient.
  • the barrier composition may comprise water as a primary solvent.
  • the active ingredient for the barrier composition is crosslinkable.
  • Crosslinkable means the active ingredient reacts with or condenses with itself to result in a final product with a molecular weight of at least about 1.5 times or about 2 times or about 3 times the molecular weight of the non-crosslinked active ingredient.
  • the active ingredient may also be crosslinkable in conjunction with a second material, such as melamine/formaldehyde resin.
  • the active ingredient may be crosslinkable by application of energy to the barrier composition after application of the barrier composition to the floor covering panel.
  • the energy can be applied by heat, infrared lamps or microwave energy.
  • the active ingredient may also be crosslinkable by inclusion of a crosslinker in the barrier composition.
  • the active ingredient is substantially crosslinked at the conclusion of the application of heat, however, it will be recognized that with time, some additional crosslinking may occur.
  • the final amount of active ingredient in the barrier composition may vary within a wide range.
  • the amount of active ingredient (that is, the water barrier chemical) in the barrier composition may be about 1, 2, 5, 10, 15, 20, 25, 30, 40 or 50% or by weight of the barrier composition, with any value forming the upper and lower endpoint, as appropriate.
  • the balance of materials in the barrier composition may primarily be water, along with a minor amount of other materials.
  • the barrier composition may include additives as are known to one of ordinary skill in the art.
  • the barrier composition may include one or more of: surfactants, viscosity modifiers, preservatives, surface tension modifiers or opacifiers.
  • any dilution of the active ingredient will depend in large part on the type and amount of active ingredient in the composition as supplied by a manufacturer.
  • the barrier composition provides a durable water resistance or barrier treatment to a floor covering panel or floor covering panel system.
  • “Durable” is used herein to mean that the barrier composition provides a treatment that will substantially reduce the possibility that water or other liquids will penetrate the seam of two mated floor covering panels.
  • the barrier composition should provide a water barrier that lasts at least 2 times as long as the barrier provided by a paraffin-based composition. Still further, the barrier composition of the present invention should reduce the amount of water penetrating a top seam by at least 1/2 or 3/4, even when the water comprises a small amount of surfactant, i.e ., 1 weight percent of the water or less.
  • the barrier composition of the present invention will provide a durable water barrier for one normal mopping cycle per week for about 1 year, or about 2 years, or about 5 years, or about 7 years, or about 12 years, or about as long as the normal useful life of the particular floor covering panel system.
  • the present invention may also be utilized in conjunction with an invention relating to selective application of an adhesive composition to a floor covering panel.
  • the invention relating to this adhesive is described in detail in WO 2004/016873 A1 filed concurrently herewith.
  • the barrier composition may be dried for about 5 seconds, about 10 seconds, about 30 seconds, about 1 minute, about 3 minutes, about 5 minutes, about 10 minutes, or about 20 minutes, with any value forming an upper or lower endpoint, as appropriate.
  • the temperature applied to dry and/or crosslink the active ingredient may be from about 100 of (37.8°C), about 120 of (48.89°C), about 140 °F (60°C), about 160 °F (71.1°C), about 180 of (82.2°C), about 200 of (93.3°C), or about 220 °F (104.4°C), where any value may form an upper and lower endpoint, as appropriate. In some aspects, it is important to heat the floor covering panels to at least about 180 °F (82.2°C) for at least 10 seconds.
  • the barrier composition may include additives as are known to one of ordinary skill in the art.
  • the barrier composition may include one or more of: surfactants, viscosity modifiers, preservatives, surface tension modifiers or opacifiers.
  • the barrier composition can be applied to the entire profile of the floor covering panel so as to provide an exceptionally complete waterproofing to the panel, e.g ., waterproofing will be applied from both above and below.
  • crosslinked polymer forms the active ingredient of the barrier composition of the present invention
  • the barrier composition may be applied to an entire portion of the first or second abutment.
  • the active ingredient of the barrier composition must be crosslinkable or, put another way, crosslinked when the floor covering panels are assembled for use in a commercial or residential establishment.
  • the crosslinkable material may be a fluoropolymer.
  • the crosslinkable material may be a fluoroacrylate polymer as described elsewhere herein.

Claims (13)

  1. Panneau de revêtement de sol (10), comprenant :
    a) une première surface sensiblement plane (11),
    b) une deuxième surface sensiblement plane (12),
    c) un premier bord latéral (13) et un deuxième bord latéral opposé (14), chaque bord latéral respectif (13, 14) s'étendant entre lesdites première surface (11) et deuxième surface (12), respectivement,
    d) un premier élément de raccord (20) défini dans le premier bord (13) du panneau et comprenant une saillie (21) s'étendant à partir de celui-ci et un une première surface d'aboutement (50) entre la saillie (21) et la première surface (11),
    e) un deuxième élément de raccord (22) défini dans le deuxième bord (14) du panneau et comprenant un évidement (23) dimensionné et formé pour recevoir ladite saillie (21) à l'intérieur, et comprenant en outre une deuxième surface d'aboutement (52) entre l'évidement (23) et la première surface (11), où une composition de protection (60) est appliquée spécifiquement à une partie (43) d'au moins l'une parmi la première surface d'aboutement (50) et la deuxième surface d'aboutement (52)
    caractérisé en ce que la composition de protection (60) comprenant un ingrédient actif qui comprend un composé fluoré réticulable est pré-appliquée de manière spécifique en usine.
  2. Revêtement de sol comprenant un premier et un deuxième desdits panneaux de revêtement de sol (10, 10a, 10b) selon la revendication 1, respectivement, le premier élément de raccord (20) du premier panneau (10a) étant reçu dans le deuxième élément de raccord (22) du deuxième panneau (10b), et au moins une partie (40, 41, 42, 43) de la première surface d'aboutement (50) du premier panneau (10a) étant en contact avec au moins une partie de la deuxième surface d'aboutement (52) du deuxième panneau (10b), où la composition de protection (60) est positionnée entre ladite première surface d'aboutement (50) et ladite deuxième surface d'aboutement (52) et crée une protection relative contre l'humidité pénétrant dans les panneaux de revêtement de sol respectifs au-delà de la première surface (11).
  3. Panneau de revêtement de sol selon la revendication 1 ou revêtement de sol selon la revendication 2, où la composition de protection (60) est appliquée sensiblement le long de toute la première surface d'aboutement (50) et/ou le long de sensiblement toute la deuxième surface d'aboutement (52).
  4. Panneau de revêtement de sol selon la revendication 1, où la composition de protection (60) est appliquée sélectivement le long d'une partie (40, 41, 42, 43) de la première surface d'aboutement (50) adjacente à la surface supérieure et/ou le long d'une partie de la deuxième surface d'aboutement adjacente à la surface supérieure.
  5. Panneau de revêtement de sol selon la revendication 4, où l'ingrédient actif est réticulable.
  6. Panneau de revêtement de sol selon la revendication 4 ou 5, où l'ingrédient actif comprend en outre au moins l'un parmi un stéarate de métal, de l'huile, de la cire, un polymère d'acrylate ou un polymère de silicone.
  7. Panneau de revêtement de sol selon la revendication 4 ou 5, où le composé fluoré comprend un fluoropolymère.
  8. Panneau de revêtement de sol selon la revendication 7, où le fluoropolymère comprend un polymère de fluoroacrylate.
  9. Panneau de revêtement de sol selon la revendication précédente 1 ou 3 à 8, caractérisé en ce qu'il est accouplé avec un deuxième panneau de revêtement de sol (10b) pour fournir un système de revêtement de sol accouplé, où le deuxième panneau de revêtement de sol possède une composition de protection (60) appliquée à au moins une partie d'une région définissant un profilé de languette et de rainure, et où la composition de protection (60) comprend un ou plusieurs parmi un composé fluoré réticulable, un stéarate de métal, de l'huile, de la cire, un polymère d'acrylate ou un polymère de silicone.
  10. Panneau de revêtement de sol (15) selon la revendication 9, où la composition de protection (60) appliquée au deuxième panneau de revêtement de sol est appliquée à un bord vertical (13, 14) du profilé, et où le bord comprend un bord supérieur du panneau de revêtement de sol.
  11. Panneau de revêtement de sol (15) selon la revendication 9, où le système de revêtement de sol accouplé prévu comprend au moins une jonction sur une surface supérieure du système.
  12. Panneau de revêtement de sol (15) selon la revendication 10, où la composition de protection (60) appliquée au deuxième panneau de revêtement de sol (10b) est appliquée à un bord vertical (13, 14) qui est complémentaire et accouplé à un bord vertical (13, 14) du premier panneau de revêtement de sol.
  13. Panneau de revêtement de sol (15) selon la revendication 11 ou 12, où la composition de protection fournit une protection étanche à l'eau, en réduisant ainsi sensiblement les fuites d'eau dans le système en comparaison à des fuites dans un système de revêtement de sol non traité avec une composition de protection de polymère réticulé (60).
