Abstract

Im Verfahren zur Herstellung von Carbonsäuren aus Olefinen und Kohlenmonoxid in Gegenwart von Wasser und eines Katalysatorsystems bei Temperaturen im Bereich von 30 DEG C bis 150 DEG C und Drücken im Bereich von 30 bis 150 bar setzt man als Katalysatorsystem eine Mischung ein aus (d) Rhodium oder einer Rhodium-Verbindung, (e) mindestens einer stickstoffhaltigen Verbindung, ausgewählt aus Pyridin, Chinolin oder Isochinolin, die 1- bis 3-fach C1-20-Alkyl-, C7-20-Aralkyl-, C7-20-Alkaryl- oder C6-12-Aryl-substituiert sein können, und (f) mindestens einem der Metalle der Gruppe Chrom, Molybdän, Wolfram, Mangan, Rhenium oder einer Verbindung dieser Metalle.

Description

Verfahren zur Herstellung von Carbonsäuren aus Olefinen
Die Erfindung betrifft ein verbessertes Verfahren zur Herstellung von Carbonsäuren durch Umsetzung von Olefinen mit Kohlenmonoxid und Wasser in Gegenwart eines vorzugsweise halogen- und phosphorfreien Katalysators.
Carbonsäuren sind vielseitig anwendbare Zwischenprodukte für verschiedenste Chemikalien. Propionsäure bzw. deren Salze werden zudem in großen Mengen bei der Futter- und Nahrungsmittelkonservierung eingesetzt. Diese Produkte können unter anderem auf Basis preiswerter Rohstoffe, wie Propionsäure aus Ethylen und CO hergestellt werden.
Die folgende Reaktionsgleichung verdeutlicht ein derartiges Verfahren am Beispiel der Umsetzung von Ethylen zu Propionsäure:
Die Umsetzung wird in der Regel in Gegenwart von Katalysatoren durchgeführt. Unterschiedliche Katalysatorsysteme sind hierfür bekannt.
In der EP-A-0 759 420 ist ein Verfahren zur Herstellung von Carbonsäuren durch Carbonylierung von Olefinen beschrieben, bei dem als Katalysatorsystem eine Mischung aus Rhodium oder einer Rhodium-Verbindung und mindestens einer stickstoffhaltigen heterocyclischen Verbindung wie Pyridin eingesetzt wird. Die Raum-Zeit-Ausbeute des Verfahrens ist nicht immer ausreichend.
In der US 5,510,524 ist ein Verfahren zur Herstellung von Carbonsäuren durch Carbonylierung eines Alkylalkohols oder reaktiven Derivates davon beschrieben. Als Katalysatorsystem wird eine Mischung aus Iridium oder Rhodium mit Rhenium als Promotor und einem Alkylhalogenid, insbesondere Methyliodid, eingesetzt.
In der WO 98/37049 ist ein Verfahren zur Herstellung von Carbonsäuren oder deren Estern durch Carbonylierung von Olefinen beschrieben, wobei als Katalysatorsystem eine Mischung aus Nickel oder einer Nickelverbindung, mindestens einem der Metalle der Gruppe Chrom, Molybdän, Wolfram, Rhenium. Ruthenium, Osmium, Rhodium, Iridium, Palladium, Platin, Silber, Gold oder einer Verbindung dieser Metalle und einer tertiären oder quartären Stickstoff-, Phosphor- oder Arsenverbindung eingesetzt wird. Neben Nickel wird besonders bevorzugt Ruthenium oder Platin verwendet. In den Beispielen wird ein Gemisch aus Nickelcarbonat und Rutheniumacetylacetonat in Verbindung mit Tetrabutyl- ammoniumhydroxid eingesetzt.
Aufgabe der vorliegenden Erfindung ist die Bereitstellung eines Verfahrens zur Herstellung von Carbonsäuren aus Olefinen und Kohlenmonoxid, das die Nachteile der bekannten Verfahren vermeidet und die gewünschten Produkte insbesondere mit hoher Raum-Zeit-Ausbeute und hoher Selektivität liefert.
Die Aufgabe wird erfindungsgemäß gelöst durch ein Verfahren zur Herstellung von Carbonsäuren aus Olefinen und Kohlenmonoxid in Gegenwart von Wasser und eines Katalysatorsystems bei Temperaturen im Bereich von 30°C bis 150°C und Drücken im Bereich von 30 bis 150 bar, bei dem man als Katalysatorsystem eine Mischung einsetzt aus (a) Rhodium oder einer Rhodium-Verbindung,
(b) mindestens einer stickstoffhaltigen Verbindung, ausgewählt aus Pyridin, Chinolin oder Isochinolin, die 1- bis 3-fach Cι-2o-Alkyl-, C .2o-Aralkyl-, C7_2o-Alkaryl- oder C62-Aryl-substituiert sein können und
(c) mindestens einem der Metalle der Gruppe Chrom, Molybdän, Wolfram, Mangan, Rhenium, vorzugsweise Molybdän oder Rhenium, oder einer Verbindung dieser Metalle.
Es wurde erfindungsgemäß gefunden, daß das Katalysatorsystem aus den Komponenten (a), (b) und (c) gegenüber bekannten Katalysatorsystemen insbesondere verbesserte Raum-Zeit-Ausbeuten liefert.
Zusammenfassend können folgende Vorteile festgestellt werden:
bereits bei niedrigen Temperaturen und moderaten Drücken können Carbonsäuren mit sehr guter Raum-Zeit-Ausbeute (RZA) und hoher Selektivität hergestellt werden.
- Zur Durchführung der Umsetzung werden weder korrosive Halogenide noch unter Reaktionsbedingungen instabile Phosphorverbindungen wie
Phosphane als Katalysatorkomponenten benötigt.
Bei der Durchführung der Umsetzung werden keine Abscheidungen von Katalysatorkomponenten im Reaktor beobachtet.
- Zur Erzielung hoher Ausbeuten ist es nicht erforderlich, CO in großem Überschuß bezüglich des Olefins einzusetzen.
Auf den Einsatz eines toxikologisch bedenklichen Katalysatormetalls wie Nickel (das in Gegenwart von CO leicht flüchtige Carbonyle bildet) kann verzichtet werden.
Insbesondere wurde gegenüber dem in EP-A-0759 420 beschriebenen Katalysatorsystem gefunden, daß das erfindungsgemäße Katalysatorsystem bei gleicher Selektivität bis zu 70 % höhere Raum-Zeit-Ausbeuten, bezogen auf die Carbonsäure, liefert, wenn im Unterschied zum Vorgehen gemäß dieser Druckschrift mindestens ein Metall der Komponente (c) vorliegt.
Vorzugsweise ist das Katalysatorsystem halogen- und phosphorfrei, insbesondere halogen- und phosphanfrei.
Als Ausgangsstoffe für das erfindungsgemäße Verfahren kommen aliphatische und cycloaliphatische Alkene mit vorzugsweise 2 bis 20, besonders bevorzugt 2 bis 8 Kohlenstoffatomen in Betracht. Beispielhaft sind Ethen. Propen sowie die Isomere des Butens, Pentens. Hexens, Octens bzw. Cyclopenten. Besonders bevorzugt als Olefin ist Ethen.
Das verbesserte Verfahren zur Herstellung von Carbonsäuren durch Umsetzung von Olefinen mit Kohlenmonoxid und Wasser wird vorzugsweise in Gegenwart eines Katalysatorsystems, bestehend aus (a) einer Rh-Quelle, (b) einem oder mehreren Derivaten des Pyridins, Chinolins oder Isochinolins und (c) einer oder mehreren Verbindungen des Cr, Mo, W, Mn oder Re, in Abwesenheit von phosphor- und halogenhaltigen Verbindungen durchgeführt.
Als Rh-Quelle werden halogenfreie Rhodiumverbindungen wie Acetate, Propionate, Acetylacetonate (acac), Oxide, Hydroxide und Carbonate eingesetzt. Weiterhin kommen Carbonylverbindungen in Betracht wie [Rh(X)(CO)2]n (X z.B. Acetylacetonat (n = 1), Propionat, Acetat (n = 2)), Rh, (CO)* 2. Rh6(CO)ι6, Salze des Anions [Rhι2(CO)3o]2" sowie durch Donorliganden (z.B. N-Basen) oder Olefine stabilisierte Rhodium-Verbindungen.
Von den Derivaten des Pyridins, Chinolins und Isochinolins sind die des Pyridins bevorzugt. Neben Pyridin selbst können die ein- bis dreifach Cι.2o-Alkyl-, C7.20- Aralkyl-, C7.2o-Alkaryl- oder C6-i2-Aryl-substituierten Verbindungen wie Picolin, Lutidin und Collidin eingesetzt werden. Besonders geeignet sind Pyridin und einfach Ci.iβ-Alkyl, C7.ιo-Alkaryl- oder Phenyl-substituierte Derivate davon, wie 4-Picolin, 4-Ethylpyridin, 4-t-Butylpyridin, 4-Tridecylpyridin, 4-(Phenylpro- pyl)pyridin, 4-Benzylpyridin, 4-Phenylpyridin oder 4,4'-Trirnethylendipyridin. Als Verbindung von Cr, Mo, W, Mn und Re werden vorzugsweise halogenfreie Salze wie Acetate, Propionate, Acetylacetonate (acac), Oxide oder Carbonate eingesetzt. Bevorzugt ist die Verwendung von Carbonylverbindungen wie M(CO)6 (M = Cr, Mo, W) oder M2(CO)10 (M = Mn, Re).
Die Reaktion wird vorzugsweise bei einem Druck von 30 bis 150 bar (bevorzugt 40 bis 100 bar) durchgeführt. Die Reaktionstemperatur beträgt vorzugsweise 30 bis 150 °C (bevorzugt 80 bis 120°C).
Der Gehalt der Reaktionslösung bzw. des Reaktionsgemisches an Rhodium (berechnet als Metall) beträgt vorzugsweise 0,001 bis 1 % m/m, besonders bevorzugt 0,01 bis 0,5 % m/m. Der Gehalt des Reaktionsgemisches an stickstoffhaltiger Verbindung (b) beträgt vorzugsweise 1 bis 50 % m m, besonders bevor- zugt 5 bis 30 % m/m. Der Gehalt der Reaktionslösung an Katalysatorkomponente (c) beträgt vorzugsweise 0,001 bis 1 % m/m, besonders bevorzugt 0,01 bis 0,5 %, berechnet als Metall.
Das Molverhältnis der Katalysatorkomponente (b) zu Rhodium liegt im allgemeinen bei 10:1 bis 10.000: 1, bevorzugt bei 50: 1 bis 1.500:1. Das Molverhältnis der Katalysatorkomponente (c) zu Rhodium liegt im allgemeinen bei 1 : 10 bis 10:1.
Das Molverhältnis der Ausgangsverbindungen Olefin und Wasser kann in weiten Grenzen variiert werden. Es wird in der Regel mindestens eine äquimolare Menge an Wasser eingesetzt. Wasser kann aber auch im Überschuß, z.B. 2 bis 10 mol Wasser pro mol Olefin, eingesetzt werden.
Auch das Molverhältnis von Olefin zu Kohlenmonoxid kann stark variiert werden, z.B. von 5:1 -bis 1 :5. Es ist bevorzugt, das Olefin und Kohlenmonoxid in einem Molverhältnis von 0,5: 1 bis 1,5:1 einzusetzen. Die Umsetzung kann mit oder ohne Lösungsmittel durchgeführt werden. Als Lösungsmittel kommen neben Carbonsäuren, insbesondere den Reaktionsprodukten, aprotisch polare Lösungsmittel wie Aceton, N-Methylpyrrolidon und Ether wie Diethylether, Dioctylether, Diethoxyethan, Dioxan, Diethylen- glykoldiethylether, Diethylenglykoldioctylether sowie hochsiedende aliphatische Kohlenwasserstoffe und aromatische Kohlenwasserstoffe wie Toluol in Betracht. In Abhängigkeit von Art und Menge des zugesetzten Lösungsmittels kann das Reaktionsgemisch ein- oder zweiphasig vorliegen.
Wird die Reaktion ohne zusätzliches Lösungsmittel durchgeführt, so ist bevorzugt, die Umsetzung in der 20 bis 99 Gew.-%-igen, bevorzugt 50 bis 95 Gew.-%-igen wässrigen Carbonsäure durchzuführen, die hergestellt wird. Bei der Herstellung von Propionsäure ist die Verwendung von Propionsäure als Lösungsmittel bevorzugt.
Die Erfindung betrifft auch die Verwendung des beschriebenen Katalysatorsystems bei Carbonylierungen von Olefinen.
Die Erfindung wird nachstehend durch Beispiele näher erläutert:
Beispiele
Allgemeine Vorschrift zur Durchführung der Versuche:
Ein Rührautoklav mit einem Volumen von 270 ml wird mit den in der Tabelle angegebenen Mengen an Propionsäure (PS), Wasser und Katalysator beschickt. Anschließend wird mit einem CO/Ethen-Gasgemisch (1/1) ein Vordruck von 30 bar eingestellt und das Reaktionsgemisch auf 100°C aufgeheizt. Nach Erreichen der Reaktionstemperatur wird mit CO/Ethen (1/1) der gewünschte Reaktionsdruck eingestellt und durch Nachpressen gehalten. Nach einer Reaktionszeit von einer Stunde wird der Reaktor abgekühlt und der Reaktorinhalt (Gasphase und Flüssigphase) auf seine Zusammensetzung hin untersucht (GC-Analytik). Die Versuchsergebnisse sind ebenfalls in der Tabelle zusammengefasst. Die Raum-Zeit-Ausbeute an Propionsäure, RZAPs berechnet sich aus der produzierten Menge an Propionsäure bezogen auf das Volumen der eingesetzten Reaktionslösung (100 ml). Die Propionsäureselektivität Sps bezieht sich auf Ethen als Ausgangsverbindung. Als Rhodiumverbindung (Rh) wurde in allen Beispielen Rh(acac)(CO)2 eingesetzt.
Die Versuche A und B zeigen, daß unter vergleichbaren Reaktionsbedinguπgen in Abwesenheit der Katalysatorkomponete (c) niedrigere RZA an Propionsäure erzielt werden. Vergleichsversuch C zeigt, daß die Katalysatorkomponente (c) in Abwesenheit einer Rhodium-Verbindung nur eine sehr geringe Aktivität aufweist.

Claims

Patentansprüche
1. Verfahren zur Herstellung von Carbonsäuren aus Olefinen und Kohlenmonoxid in Gegenwart von Wasser und eines Katalysatorsystems bei Temperaturen im Bereich von 30°C bis 150°C und Drücken im Bereich von 30 bis 150 bar, dadurch gekennzeichnet, daß man als Katalysatorsystem eine
Mischung einsetzt aus
(a) Rhodium oder einer Rhodium-Verbindung,
(b) mindestens einer stickstoffhaltigen Verbindung, ausgewählt aus Pyridin, Chinolin oder Isochinolin, die 1- bis 3-fach Cι-2n-Alkyl-, C7.2o-Aralkyl-,
C .2o-Alkaryl- oder C6.i2-Aryl-substituiert sein können, und
(c) mindestens einem der Metalle der Gruppe Chrom, Molybdän, Wolfram, Mangan, Rhenium oder einer Verbindung dieser Metalle.
2. Verfahren nach Anspruch 1, dadurch gekennzeichnet, daß das Katalysatorsystem phosphor- und halogenfrei ist.
3. Verfahren nach Anspruch 1 oder 2, dadurch gekennzeichnet, daß im Katalysatorsystem das Molverhältnis von Komponente (b) zu (a) 10:1 bis 10.000:1 und das Molverhältnis von Komponente (c) zu (a) 1 : 10 bis 10:1 beträgt.
4. Verfahren nach einem der Ansprüche 1 bis 3, dadurch gekennzeichnet, daß das Reaktionsgemisch 1 bis 30 Gew.-%, bezogen auf das gesamte Reaktions- gemisch, der Komponente (b) enthält.
5. Verfahren nach einem der Ansprüche 1 bis 4, dadurch gekennzeichnet, daß die Metalle der Komponente (c) als Metallcarbonyle eingesetzt werden.
6. Verfahren nach einem der Ansprüche 1 bis 5. dadurch gekennzeichnet, daß als Komponente (c) Molybdän oder Rhenium oder eine Verbindung davon eingesetzt wird.
7. Verfahren nach einem der Ansprüche 1 bis 6, dadurch gekennzeichnet, daß die Umsetzung in der herzustellenden Carbonsäure als Lösungsmittel durchgeführt wird.
8. Verfahren nach einem der Ansprüche 1 bis 7, dadurch gekennzeichnet, daß das Olefin ein aliphatisches oder cycloaliphatisches Alken mit 2 bis 20 C-
Atomen ist.
9. Verfahren nach einem der Ansprüche 1 bis 8, dadurch gekennzeichent, daß Propionsäure durch Carbonylierung von Ethen hergestellt wird.
10. Verwendung einer Mischung aus
(a) Rhodium oder einer Rhodium- Verbindung,
(b) mindestens einer stickstoffhaltigen Verbindung, ausgewählt aus Pyridin, Chinolin oder Isochinolin, die 1- bis 3-fach Cι.2o-Alkyl-, C .2o-Aralkyl-,
C .2o-Alkaryl- oder C6.i2-Aryl-substituiert sein können und
(c) mindestens einem der Metalle der Gruppe Chrom, Molybdän, Wolfram, Mangan, Rhenium oder einer Verbindung dieser Metalle
als Katalysator bei der Carbonylierung von Olefinen.
