Definitions
- the invention relates to the field of industrial extraction of sugar from sugar beets.
- Industrial processes for extracting sugar from sugar beets include one or more disinfection steps because of the presence of telluric germs, like the lactic flora brought with the chips.
- telluric germs like the lactic flora brought with the chips.
- This flora which proliferates easily at the temperature of process, when it develops in an uncontrolled way, acidification of the medium, which induces a hydrolysis of sucrose and therefore a loss yield of up to 1% of the sugar produced.
- ethylenediamine sulfur dioxide, disodium cyanodithiocarbamate, Potassium N-methyl dithiocarbamate, dimethyl dithiocarbamate, disodium methylene bis (dithiocarbamate), dimethyl dithiocarbamate sodium, esters of para-hydroxy benzoic acid, peracetic acid or hydrogen peroxide.
- J. HERCIK and V. DACHOVSKY (Listy Cukrovarnické 91/75 pages126-132) have studied the use as a disinfectant of Persteril, which is a solution aqueous solution containing 36% to 40% by weight, peracetic acid and 7 to 10% by weight of hydrogen peroxide, diluted to 0.1% -1%, in the manufacture of sugar. They found that this composition can not replace formalin, but can, on the other hand, limit the use of the latter.
- Ekarox® B10 which is an aqueous solution containing 2.5% by weight, of peracetic acid and 30% by weight of hydrogen peroxide, was an alternative valid for the use of formaldehyde when extracting sugar from beet sugar, at a concentration of total active ingredients (peracetic acid + hydrogen peroxide) of between 200 and 500 ppm.
- European Patent Application EP 0 678 123 published on October 25, 1995 describes a process for the disinfection of aqueous sugar solutions during the extraction, using two aqueous solutions of acid peracetic, one having a molar ratio of hydrogen peroxide to acid peracetic greater than or equal to 12, which is introduced into the pulp waters pressed, and the other having a molar ratio of hydrogen peroxide to acid peracetic less than or equal to 10, which is introduced into the central fraction of broadcasters.
- This process because it involves the use of two solutions of different concentrations, gives rise to problems of implementation at operators of the production unit.
- European Patent Application EP 0 943 692 published on September 22 1999 discloses a process using only one peracetic acid solution in which the molar ratio of hydrogen peroxide to peracetic acid is less than or equal to 4, by introducing it at least one point upstream of the broadcast drums, and at least one point in the water circuit from the pulp pressing, before recycling to the diffusion drum or drums, to maintain a peracetic acid concentration at a value between 10 and 300 ppm (parts per million) and preferably between 20 and 50 ppm, the beets being optionally sprayed with said solution before cutting in chips.
- the applicant has sought to improve the efficiency of the processes described above, without creating new negative side effects.
- the subject of the invention is a process for disinfecting peracetic acid, of sugar solutions circulating in a sugar extraction unit of the sugar beet, characterized in that it comprises a step of treatment of beets before cutting into chips with an aqueous solution of acid peracetic composition comprising between about 0.1% by weight and 0.3% by weight, of peracetic acid, a step of spraying the chips, at the outlet of the root cutter, by an aqueous solution comprising between about 0.01% by weight and 1% by weight of peracetic acid and preferably between 0.3% by weight and 0.5% by weight weight of peracetic acid, characterized in that a further aqueous solution of peracetic acid having a peroxide molar ratio of hydrogen on peracetic acid less than or equal to 4, in at least one point of the installation upstream of the diffusion drum or drums and at least one point of the circuit of water from pulp pressing, before recycling to the diffusion drums and characterized in that a further solution is peracetic acid continuously in the recydulated water circuits
- the treatment of beetroot before cutting mentioned above is generally performed by spraying or spraying said solution. he may also be carried out by immersing the said beetroot in diluted solution.
- the process as defined above operates in continuous, over a whole campaign of extraction is, about 3 to 6 months per year.
- the treatment with peracetic acid, object of the process and its variants as defined previously, is generally implemented with only one commercial composition.
- a composition is in the form of a solution aqueous containing from 5% to 30% and preferably from 15% to 25% by weight peracetic acid, 15% to 25% by weight of hydrogen peroxide and 15% peracetic acid, 15% to 25% by weight of hydrogen peroxide and 15% 25% acetic acid and particularly about 15% by weight of acid peracetic and 23% by weight of hydrogen peroxide.
- the commercial composition is introduced continuously without prior dilution, by controlling the flow of introduction by measuring the desired initial concentration of peracetic acid in the circuit instead of introduction.
- the total amount of peracetic acid used during the various stages of treatment is between about 20 g and 40 g per tonne of beet hurry.
- This process makes it possible to control the diffusion infection, the purity of the juice green, consumption of lime salts and coloring of white sugar. We have a minimum increase of 2% in the dry matter content of the pressed pulp.
