  • This invention relates generally to featherbeds, and more particularly to a cover for featherbeds.
  • featherbeds themselves are typically difficult to wash because of their bulk. Periodic washing is important to the appearance and life of featherbeds, which often become soiled with constant use. It would be desirable to be able to conveniently wash a featherbed and also to prevent feather quills from poking through the cover of the featherbed.
  • the present invention includes a lower featherbed layer; an upper featherbed layer having edge portions connected to corresponding edge portions of the lower layer, defining therebetween a volume adapted for convenient insertion of a conventional featherbed member, the upper layer comprising a quilted member, the quilted member being constructed so as to prevent feather members from an inserted featherbed from coming through the featherbed, and being sensed by a user lying on the featherbed member; and means for opening a part of the edge portion connections to permit insertion and removal of the featherbed.

  • the woven cotton fabric used in the featherbed cover is 200 thread count cambric 100% cotton. Different weights of fabric and different fabrics could be used. Examples include 180, 230 and 260 thread count. Intermediate section 20 shown is approximately 1/4-1/2 inches thick. Alternatives to polyester batting include batting having different percentages of cotton and polyester and all-cotton batting. Lower section 21 is a combination of polyester and cotton; alternatives include non-woven material, 100% polyester and 100% cotton.

In addition, when the cover becomes soiled, it is convenient for the user to remove the featherbed from the cover and wash the cover in conventional fashion (the featherbed itself will not require washing).
