Description

The invention relates to the field of ammunition for firearms, in particular for wholesale artillery caliber, and relates more particularly to a new metal ammunition shell for firearms to contain a combustible propellant charge having vocation to ensure the propulsion of a projectile.

The problem of wear and physical erosion and / or chemical firearms caused by ammunition and gas projectile friction propellant charge combustion hot on the inner wall of the gun tube has been known since long time.

Several solutions to this problem have already been proposed, but none is really satisfactory, in particular because the cost is too high and / or insufficient efficiency, and / or because the solution creates other problems.

Patent FR 1,526,983 teaches, for example, that the erosion of the gun tube can be reduced by coating the internal surface of the metal casing with an envelope made of a fabric coated or impregnated with a wax. paraffinic charged with one or more powdered metal oxides, such as SiO 2 , MgO, SnO 2 and TiO 2 .
This solution has several drawbacks. First, the kinetics of charge departure, dependent on the softening temperature of the wax and the behavior of the fabric, is poorly controlled.
It also has the disadvantage of a risk of pollution of the igniter and of the propellant powder by depositing particles of metal oxides torn from their support. In the event of severe mechanical stresses on the ammunition, such pollution can lead to the inhibition of the propellant powder grains, then consequently cause poor ignition (delay), then even the bursting of the barrel of the weapon. In addition, the anti-erosion efficiency is quite limited compared to the level sought by current users, and we observe the presence of residues in the barrel of the weapon, which causes its fouling.

US Patent 3,148,620 teaches that one can solve the aforementioned pollution problem by interposing a sheet of combustible material between the charge propellant and anti-erosive tissue but we find then a significant drop in anti-erosion efficiency and the anti-erosion additive becomes complex and costly.

The skilled person is therefore always looking a simple, effective and inexpensive solution to aforementioned problem of wear and erosion of the tube of the fire arms.

The present invention provides such a solution and primarily relates to a new socket metallic ammunition for firearms comprising a metal bottom and skirt, at least partially internally coated with a new anti-erosion additive comprising titanium oxide as an anti-erosion agent.

This new socket is characterized in that the new anti-erosion add-on is a rigid sleeve made up of a combustible matrix loaded with powdery titanium oxide, in that the weight content of TiO 2 is between 10% and 30% relative to the total weight of the sleeve, limits included, and in that the combustible matrix comprises fibrous nitrocellulose, fibrous cellulose and an organic resin.

It has been found, unexpectedly, that an excellent diffusion of the TiO 2 charge is thus obtained in the gas flow during the shot as well as a very higher anti-erosive efficiency, which can reach a factor of 30, than that observed using the same amount of TiO 2 in an impregnated fabric as described in the aforementioned state of the art, while the production of this sleeve, and its rapid installation without gluing in the skirt of the sleeve, are simple and inexpensive operations.
In addition, an excellent retention of the TiO 2 charge by the fibrous material has been observed during all the phases of the life of the ammunition, and it is not necessary to interpose a protection between the anti-erosion sleeve and the charge. propellant to avoid pollution of the load. This represents a considerable advantage concerning the aforementioned compromise between the operational safety of ammunition and the effectiveness of the anti-erosion action.
In addition, it was also noted the absence of fouling phenomenon of the barrel of the weapon, and even of the case, during the shot.

The subject of the present invention is also, on the one hand, the aforementioned new anti-erosion supplement, and on the other hand a new ammunition for firearms comprising the aforementioned metal socket according to the invention containing a propellant charge combustible and equipped with a primer and a projectile attached to the socket in a manner well known to man of the job.

The metal constituting the new socket according to the invention and more particularly the bottom and the skirt, can be any metal or metal alloy usually used to make sockets metallic, such as steel and brass.

According to the invention, the sleeve is internally coated with the anti-erosion sleeve, either entirely over the entire height of the skirt, or partially over only part of this height.
By “coated”, it should be understood that the sleeve is in total or partial contact with the interior of the skirt. The partial contact can be punctual, linear or surface. Generally, in the event of partial contact, this is materialized by several point and / or linear and / or surface contact zones.

Still generally, the shape of the sleeve matches that of the socket. The sleeve can for example be cylindrical or almost cylindrical, frustoconical, or comprise a cylindrical part and a frustoconical part.
The sleeve can also consist of a stack of several sections.

Preferably, the sleeve externally has longitudinal grooves coming into contact with the internal surface of the skirt of the sleeve. Such contact zones are linear, or almost linear, or even form narrow longitudinal strips.
Such a configuration creates, between the interior wall of the skirt and the sleeve, longitudinal conduits which promote the combustion of the combustible matrix of the sleeve as well as the flow of all the combustion gases from the propellant charge and from the sleeve.

According to another preferred variant of the invention, the sleeve has a longitudinal slot or helical over its entire length so as to offer a certain radial elasticity facilitating its implementation place by the collar of the socket, as well as its positioning and holding it against the surface inside of the sleeve skirt.

According to the invention, the rigid sleeve consists of a combustible matrix comprising fibrous nitrocellulose, fibrous cellulose and an organic resin, loaded with pulverulent TiO 2 .
The combustible matrix may also include certain additives, such as stabilizers such as diphenylamine.

Preferably, the combustible matrix is essentially consisting of fibrous nitrocellulose, of fibrous cellulose and organic resin, say that the sum of the weight contents in nitrocellulose, cellulose and resin is more than 95% with respect to the fuel matrix.

The TiO 2 content is between 10% by weight and 30% by weight relative to the total weight of the sleeve, limits included.

La granulométrie du TiO2 peut être quelconque. Elle est par exemple de l'ordre de 50 µm.The particle size of the TiO 2 can be arbitrary. It is for example of the order of 50 μm.

The sleeve may also include fillers other than TiO 2 , in particular other mineral oxides known for their anti-erosive action.

As fibrous cellulose, preferably used Kraft® fibers, but other fibers natural or regenerated cellulosics can all also suitable, including pulp fibers mechanics and viscoses.

Comme nitrocellulose fibreuse, on peut utiliser toute nitrocellulose industrielle ayant un taux d'azote inférieur à 13,8%.As fibrous nitrocellulose, it is possible to use any industrial nitrocellulose with a nitrogen level less than 13.8%.

As organic resin, any resin or mixture of resins having the property of flocculate on nitrocellulose fibers or cellulose.

The preferred resins according to the invention are the acrylic resins, vinyl resins, latexes butadiene base such as styrene butadiene latex or butadiene acrylonitrile.

The reports of the different components of the sleeve can vary widely.

However, a minimum quantity of resin is required. to allow sufficient agglomeration of the fibers, and it has been observed that it is necessary that the quantity resin weight represents at least 2% of the weight amount of nitrocellulose and cellulose used. We will preferably use a quantity weight between 5% and 15%, for example close 10%.

The nitrocellulose / cellulose weight ratio can vary between 8 and 1/8, preferably between 8 and 1/2.

The rigid sleeve can be obtained according to techniques well known to those skilled in the art from of an aqueous suspension of the various constituents, for example by felting.

Its dimensions are adapted to those of the socket, so as to be able to coat the inner wall of the socket after introduction.

The following nonlimiting example illustrates the invention and the advantages it provides.

a) Réalisation d'un manchon cylindrique rigide de masse 480 g constitué d'une matrice combustible (384 g) chargée en TiO2 (96 g), de diamètre extérieur 122 mm, et d'épaisseur 4 mm.a) Production of a rigid cylindrical sleeve with a mass of 480 g consisting of a combustible matrix (384 g) loaded with TiO 2 (96 g), with an external diameter of 122 mm and a thickness of 4 mm.

In an aqueous suspension consisting of 97.6 parts by weight of Kraft fibers, 248 parts by weight of nitrocellulose having a nitrogen content of 13.4% and 9600 parts by weight of water, 96 parts are added. weight of TiO 2 having a median diameter of 44 μm, 33.6 parts by weight of an acrylic resin of the poly (methyl ethyl ethyl acrylate) type and 4.8 parts by weight of diphenylamine.

Après obtention d'un mélange homogène, on réalise, selon la technique de feutrage bien connue de l'homme du métier, 2 tronçons de manchon, de longueur 185 mm, de diamètre extérieur 122 mm et d'épaisseur 4 mm, ayant chacun une masse de 240 g.After obtaining a homogeneous mixture, we realizes, according to the well-known felting technique of the skilled person, 2 sections of sleeve, length 185 mm, outside diameter 122 mm and thickness 4 mm, each having a mass of 240 g.

b) Réalisation d'une douille, d'une cartouche et d'une munition de diamètre 105 mm selon l'invention, comportant le manchon réalisé en a) comme appoint anti-érosifb) Realization of a socket, a cartridge and 105 mm diameter ammunition according to the invention, comprising the sleeve made in a) as an anti-erosion top-up

After having split longitudinally each of the 2 sleeve sections made in a), they are rolled slightly on themselves so as to allow their introduction by the collar of a brass socket of type 105F4 with a base and a skirt approximately cylindrical, length 607 mm.

Les diamètres intérieur et extérieur du collet sont respectivement 104 mm et 107 mm.The inside and outside diameters of the collar are 104 mm and 107 mm respectively.

The skirt has a cylindrical part of internal diameter 122 mm and length approximately 400 mm, as well as a frustoconical part connecting this cylindrical part and the collar.

After successive penetration of the 2 sections of sleeve in the socket by its collar, then loosening, we push them until they are stacked and internally lining the cylindrical part of the skirt.

We obtained a cartridge by positioning a TPA type primer 27 x 320 well known to those skilled in the art loom at the socket base, then in filling the socket with 5.6 kg of a charge propellant consisting of a double base powder nitrocellulose / nitroglycerin type GB 19 T (1.65) GR also well known to those skilled in the art.

On a ensuite obtenu une munition en positionnant par le collet de la cartouche, de façon bien connue de l'homme du métier, un projectile de type boulet empenné OFL 105 de 5,8 kg, lesté à 6,25 kg.We then obtained ammunition by positioning by the collar of the cartridge, in a well known manner from a person skilled in the art, a feathered ball type projectile OFL 105 of 5.8 kg, weighted at 6.25 kg.

c) Evaluation en arme de munitions obtenues selon b)c) Weapon evaluation of ammunition obtained according to b)

The weapon assessment (105 F1 type gun) of 20 identical munitions obtained as per b) allowed to note a wear of the barrel of 0.5 µm by shot, measured after 20 shots with a star of metrology in a manner well known to those skilled in the art.

During these shots, the initial measured speed of the projectile is 1527 m / s and the maximum pressures, respectively measured at 110 mm and 508 mm from the cylinder head, are 405 MPa and 387 MPa (average values). We also note the absence of fouling of the tube and even from the socket during the shot.

In parallel with this example according to the invention, we carried out two comparative examples, not part of the invention, in order to highlight the problem solved by the invention and the advantages that it provides.

According to the first comparative example, 20 identical munitions were produced, differing from the above-mentioned ammunition according to the invention only by the anti-erosion additive used, namely, the use, instead of the rigid sleeve produced according to a), an addition of 182 g well known to those skilled in the art, corresponding to the state of the art according to the above-mentioned FR 1 526 983, consisting of 53% by weight of TiO 2 and 47% by weight of wax and fabric support.

Note that the amount of TiO 2 is identical (96 g) to that used according to the invention.

Weapon evaluation, under the same conditions that in c) according to the invention, allowed to note a 7 µm barrel wear per shot, namely wear 14 times greater than that observed with the ammunition according to the invention.

According to the second comparative example, we used the same supplement of 182 g as that used according to the first comparative example, but further comprising a protective sheet to avoid pollution of the loading, as taught by US 3,148,620 cited above in the state of the art.

Weapon evaluation, under the same conditions that in c) according to the invention, allowed to note a 14 µm weapon tube wear per shot, namely wear 28 times greater than that observed with the ammunition according to the invention.
