Definitions
- the invention relates to an ion engine, in particular for satellites and spacecraft, with an ionization device for a fuel gas, at least one acceleration device for the fuel ions and equipped with a gas-flowed hollow cathode and an anode electron source whose beam for neutralization in the fuel ion beam can be coupled.
- the atoms of a fuel gas emerging from a entrained reservoir are first ionized and then the then positively charged fuel ions are accelerated in an electrostatic high-voltage field.
- a neutralizer for this purpose is preferably a gas discharge assembly, which is used as an electron source.
- the cathode In order to start the gas discharge between the anode and the cathode in such an arrangement, the cathode must be heated comparatively strong so that the escaping electrons due to the applied anode voltage capable of ionizing the gas flowing through and thus initiate the discharge process.
- a cathode which is typically made of a high electron-emissivity material, such as impregnated tungsten, must be brought to a temperature of about 1200 ° C.
- this not only requires a considerable expenditure of energy, but the high cathode temperature also leads at the same time to a heavy material load and premature material fatigue.
- a comparatively complex thermally and mechanically stable design of the entire arrangement is required.
- this known device requires high gas flow rates to bring about the ignition.
- a generic electrostatic engine as an ion engine for satellites and spacecraft is known from US 4,838,021 and US 5,146,742 A.
- an ionization device is provided for a fuel gas, wherein it is known that an accelerator device for the fuel ions is arranged as well as a gas flowed through a hollow cathode and an anode equipped electron source, the beam for neutralization in the fuel jet can be coupled.
- an ion engine with an ionization device for a propellant gas, an accelerator for the fuel ions and an equipped with a cathode and an anode electron source is known.
- the ionization device has a gas-flowed heated hollow cathode and Before the hollow cathode, an additional electrode for starting the discharge is arranged.
- US 5,369,953 shows an ion engine for satellites and spacecraft according to the aforementioned prior art, wherein a starter electrode is disposed in front of the cathode of the electron source, between which and the cathode, a discharge is ignited.
- a starter electrode is arranged in front of the cathode of a neutralizer.
- the object of the invention is to provide an engine of the type mentioned in such a way that it has the lowest possible material stress and thus high reliability and that a design is possible, which is as close as possible to the stationary operating state, after ignition is oriented.
- the invention solves this problem by providing in such an engine that an additional electrode is arranged in the region of the cathode, between which and the cathode, a pulse discharge for igniting the gas discharge between the anode and cathode can be initiated.
- the additional electrode consists of a cylindrical pin which is arranged in the longitudinal axis of the hollow cathode.
- a entrained gas in the case of the embodiment XENON described here, in a trained as an ionizer chamber.
- This chamber 3 is surrounded by a permanent magnet 4 and a coil-shaped induction cathode 6 coupled to a resonant circuit 5.
- an extraction anode 7 is further arranged.
- the gas inlet facing away from the end of the chamber 3 is provided with outlet openings, in front of which an extraction cathode 8 and, spaced from this, a braking or shielding electrode 9 are arranged. Furthermore, in this area, a neutralizer 10 is arranged in the form of an electron source, whose structure is explained in more detail with reference to FIG.
- the ion engine is connected in the usual way, ie, that at the extraction anode 7 is applied a positive voltage of 4.5 kV, for example, while at the extraction electrode 8 an acceleration voltage of -2 kV is applied, the brake electrode 9 is located on Zero potential. Because of this circuit arrangement and the induction device 4, 5, 6 surrounding the chamber 3, the gas entering the chamber 3 from the reservoir is ionized, the electrons being sucked off the extraction anode 7 and the positively charged gas ions acting under the effect of the reaction between the extraction anode 7 and -kathode 8 existing acceleration field leave the chamber 3 with high energy through the outlet openings, where they are neutralized by means of the electron beam supplied by the electron source 10.
- a cathode tube 12 is arranged in the interior of an anode formed as a housing 11, also referred to as a keeper, whose outlet region located in the housing 11 is bounded by the actual cathode 13 and surrounded by a heating coil 14.
- a pin-shaped additional electrode 15 is attached to a holder 16, which is electrically insulated via an insulating insert 17 in the cathode tube 12.
- the inlet opening of the cathode tube 12 is finally, indicated in the figure by a solid arrow, acted upon by a gas, in the case of the embodiment XENON described here, which flows through the cathode tube 12 and through a central bore of the cathode 13 in the chamber formed as anodes Housing 11 occurs.
- Anode 11, cathode 12 and additional electrode 15 are, as indicated in the figure, connected to each other by an electrical circuit 18, in which between the anode 11 and the cathode tube 12, and thus also at the electrically connected to the latter cathode 13, the operating voltage U ke is present.

Description
- Fig. 1
- den prinzipiellen Aufbau eines Ionentriebwerkes und
